The members of the Literature Club have graduated and are about to go their separate ways! With Asakura going to study abroad in Canada and the others moving on to college, the group says its goodbyes in this final volume!
Nagaru Tanigawa is a graduate of the Kwansei Gakuin University School of Law. In 2003, he won Kadokawa's Grand Prize for Literary World for his work on the Haruhi Suzumiya series.
Despite being a very ropey series with many issues the final volume makes the very clever decision to focus on the series' standout character and arguably it's most important dynamic.
I have constantly stated how the romance in this series pretty much betrays the characterisation of almost every character in the series and overall the dynamics are very weak compared to the original series however since volume 1 I have always sung the praise of this series very clever and well written adaptation of Ryokou Asakura with her friendship wihh Nagato being the core of the series and the one thing that's kept me going. The Kyon and Yuki romance is obviously surface level and pretty mediocre as romances go so focusing and pretty much revealing this narrative to be Asakura's all along actually makes me forgive some of the story decisions from previous volumes and gives the volume an engaging and emotionally charged protagonist and arc which the series so far has been sorely lacking.
The volume laments on Asakura and Nagatos relationship it's history and what it means to her. I like how it delves into Asakura acknowledging that she always needed Yuki more than Yuki needed her. The cooking subplot which I didn't care for now is a very poignant and important moment for Asakura once you realise it's the one thing holding her back from making the decision to leave. I found that very moving and quite sad, once again a story arc meant to further the Kyon and Nagato relationship actually made another character and their dynamic more layered instead😂 I know it's the final volume and I should be nice but it's kinda hilarious how every volume and story arc just blatantly displays how shallow the Yuki and Kyon romance is to the point that it serves the dynamics and arcs of other characters more than it does their own.
Asakura coming to realize she needs to stand on her own two feet after seeing how much Nagato has done to become independent is probably the only and most well fleshed out arc in the series. I do like the structure of this volume, you see the entire third year play out in a sort of melancholic way which is very fitting for this franchise. Overall the final volume did a lot of right things and went in a direction I was happy with however I thought the ending misses the opportunity to really end on an emotional gut punch and instead it plays it too safe. We get a time skip and see everyone 2 years later. The suggestion of a possible Haruhi and Koizumi romance officially sealed this entire series as fanfiction fodder that genuinely made me laugh of embarrassment. However what annoyed me was the sappy ending. If the whole point of the volume was about letting go and moving onto the next chapter but to still remember and carry with you what you love then why in the next page do we see Asakura back in Japan reunited with Nagato. I believe the perfect ending would be the Goodbye, we shouldn't have to see what the future holds for these characters. The whole point of this franchise is that however much we hear about the future post high school we never actually see it. The franchise through all it's philosophy, themes and whackiness is about adventures and plights of High school, even the original series knew not to go beyond the High school setting.
Despite being objectively the weakest entry in the Haruhi Suzumiya franchise the Disappearance Of Nagato Yuki-chan has its fair share of ups. This volume is one of the better ones but still misses the landing despite being somewhat close. Overall it's a series I'm not going to revisit anytime soon. This may have been a passable but mediocre slice of life romcom had it just been original characters however by attaching itself to the Haruhi Suzumiya franchise it pretty much shoots itself in its foot and misses every good opportunity to tell a story that could have enhanced and enriched these pre existing characters instead turning them into a parody. Overall I'd give the series a 4.5/10. It's slightly below average as a Haruhi Suzumiya spin off however as a standard slice of life romcom i could see it passing as a 5 or 6. Overall nothing to write home about. I'm sorry, I gave this series a chance and really wanted to root for it but it never justified it's existence by the end
Gahh, these guys are so cuuute. OMG I honestly thought the grandchild was reallll, but whew it was just Ryouko’s imagination 😂😂 Kyon is pretty cool though. And haha we all knew Koizumi liked that ribbon-haired lady 😂 I ship them though 👌

Sweet series of friendship and developing romance between Kyon and Yuki. Alternate storyline from the Original Haruhi Universe. More fodder for fans of the Haruhi series. I personally prefer the Original series the Best, but enjoyed reading this Alternate Yuki Series.
