Baking fever is sweeping through Cornwall this summer, and with the announcement that Cliffs House is hosting a popular baking contest, Julianne and her friends couldn't be more excited -- until Dinah announces that she's one of the chosen contestants! Julianne promises herself to do everything possible to support her friend in the face of stiff competition ... and two extremely competitive international judges...all while learning a few lessons in the kitchen under the oh-so-close tutelage of Matthew himself.
With love as the secret ingredient, and sparks flying from more than the contestants' caramelizing torches, Book Five in the bestselling Cornwall series is a recipe for summer romance!

… my own baking skills were pretty rusty, even after Dinah's coaching. Matt probably discreetly buried my scones when I wasn't around.
Of course, the judges are tough as old boots, and the way they argue over a sponge puts cats to shame…
Nathan looked as cornered as a mouse in a live trap.
My Review:
I jumped from book one to book five in this series so a year has passed and somewhere in between, I seem to have missed out on the introduction and background stories for the characters of Nathan and Kitty. Kitty appears to have had a rather colorful and checkered past and was socially awkward and gruff. I wasn’t sure I was going to fully appreciate her, but she grew on me. Julianne and Matt are all loved up and the little village is developing a tourist trade, which won them the honor of hosting the coveted Grand Baking Extravaganza - a popular televised contest that featured area bakers and two tough professional judges. I enjoyed the sweetly observant and insightful dual POV narratives of Julianne and Kitty who pitched in to assist one of their own during the contest. The storylines were entertaining and well balanced while alternating between Kitty’s angst, a bit of romance, cooking mishaps, clever wry humor, competition disasters, and sweet family developments. Luckily I have several more of these delightful little novellas loaded on my Kindle.
How I'm loving this series, and given I love baking in books, and generally watching Bake Off style programmes, this book was always going to be a winner for me! And thankfully once I started it, I wasn't disappointed.
Was fabulous to be back in Ceffylgwyn and Cliffs House, and can't believe its already book 5 of this series, and able to catch up with Julianne, Kitty and the team. This time around we have a big TV baking contest as the event being organised, and not only that but Dinah, has been chosen to compete too.
Fans of the series already know what a talented cook Dinah is, so seeing what she comes up with over the three rounds of competition is mind blowing. Not only do we see what great bakes she is capable of, but the descriptions of some of the competitors bakes too, is testament to the great imagination of the author.
Matthew is also trying to teach Julianne how to cook, with some interesting and amusing outcomes.
However this book isn't just about Julianne and Matthew. This time we also get further insights into Kitty's character, with sections dedicated to just her. She is sort of cultivating a fledgling romance, but I was more interested in her family interactions, which I can't help but think will become more and more relevant in some way as the series progresses.
This could be read as a standalone book, especially by cake lovers, but each book in the series is more of a short novella, so catching up in its entirety isn't as scary as with a series of this length of 400+ page books!
Overall another great addition to the series, which I have once again really enjoyed reading.
Okay, on book 5 of the series, I have stopped reading, and given up on the rest of the series.
The storyline and characters have become secondary to waiting for the Americanisms. Within the first few pages, a Cornish born and bred mother is looking for her "pocketbook". We don't have pocketbooks in the UK - we have HANDBAGS.
The main character, Julianne, goes on to speak of molasses, and I have no problem with that as she IS American living in Cornwall, and she also tells us that it's called treacle in the UK.
But the rest of it? No, sorry, doesn't wash with me.
I think the moral of the story is: If you're American writing stories set in the UK, make sure you are using British vocabulary, or be prepared for criticism.
It was lovely to return to Cliffs House and the characters that work/live there.
This book brings in regulars like Julianna and Lady Amanda and we discover more about Kitty, the trainee events planner and a developing friendship with the American Nathan. Nathan manages to bring an event similar to Bake Off to Cliffs House. It's only then do we find out that Dinah, the Cliffs House cook has been selected as a contestant. The story culminates in the cooking final.
I really enjoyed this book and have already pre-ordered the next book in the series "A Castle In Cornwall". Can't wait for July when it is released.
Read five of these now. They're short, have HEA/HFN endings, very clean, low level conflicts.
Setting was too scant for my taste. Wanted more of Cornwall.
Lots of flower arranging, designer shoes, and (in this one) baking, consumption of pasties, and some (not enough) about local plants and gardening in Cornwall (a lot of the gardening is done in greenhouses).
Okay if you are looking for a not-too-heavy read that can be finished in a couple of hours. Only the first two can be considered romance. Maybe more romance (with additional characters) in the later books but I have to admit, I got bored.
When they hear that the Bake Off will be held in their community they are concerned about the logistics. However this is nothing to the trepidation felt by the cook, as she has been accepted as a contestant. Then there is the budding romance between the promoter and the event assistant. Will both be winners? A gentle easy read book that a real pleasure. With human, engaging characters that make you feel their trials and tribulations. The only criticism i have is that it was only 79% of the page count.
Another enjoyable entry in the interconnected series of short stories featuring Julianne, an American event planner now working at a manor house in Cornwall. In this entry a baking contest (think a much shotened GBBO) takes place at the manor. For the first time in this entry, the POV alternates between Julianne and Kitty. Kitty first appeared in the last book, and is now Julianne's assistant. I liked the parts featuring Kitty, and hope to see more of her in future entries in the series.
I’ve read all 5 of these and I’ve enjoyed every one, but this one has been my least favourite. The whole bake off story was just a bit dull and predictable
