I wanted to read this book after seeing the film as my father was a young 20 year old soldier caught up in the retreat to Dunkirk. Sadly his unit formed part of the rearguard and he never made it to the beaches, but was taken prisoner at Cassel and spent the rest of the war in various PoW camps.
