My second graphic novel by Pedrosa, whose Equinoxes I read in the last year and loved. But that novel is sort of abstract, an impressive four season multi-layered story. I gave five stars to it, but I had to look at my review to even begin to recall what it is about. It's a work of art more about the form and how the ideas get expressed through the form than the specific characters.

This kind of forgetting will not happen with Portugal, which I picked up because I have been slow-reading (it's like the slow food movement!) The Book of Disquiet by Pessoa, set in Lisbon, and thought: I know so little about Portugal. Then twice yesterday people interrupted my reading of this book on the train to ask me if I were planning to go to Portugal (people don't usually look at or talk to each other on urban trains, in my experience, but as I get older people maybe find me harmless, I'm not sure). With a title like that, the questions are not surprising. But each interrupter told me of visiting this magical place, their favorite place they had ever visited, and encouraged me to go there. In lieu of an actual journey, I have these two books.

Portugal is a fitting title for this (what I take to be) semi-autobiographical graphic novel, more than 250 sumptuously illustrated over-sized pages, a story of Simon Mucha, an illustrator in his thirties whose life is at a crossroads. He has had some success, but he hates all the work he has done. He's stuck, and his girlfriend is increasingly stuck, too, in figuring out how to light a fire under him, to get him to draw again. He's teaching elementary art, which is a good thing, but this is not the life he wanted to live. But what is it he actually needs to do? He is like this blank page on which the future is waiting to be written. Or not; he might just fizzle out and unhappily do as he has been doing (though as a teacher myself. . . ). The saddest moment in the book is when she leaves him; she even gives him a script: "Tell me you love me and want me to stay," and he can't say it. He is that empty.

But he goes to Portugal for a cousin's wedding with his difficult and distant workaholic father. Slowly, this lost and essentially unlikeable guy gets transformed. And by what? By his long lost family there. He can't even speak Portuguese. He hasn't been there in fifteen years. But he--and also to some extent his father--gets transformed by family, and Portugal. A roots story! Not so remarkable, in that, and pretty straightforward as a narrative, but quite moving, in the way Pedrosa takes his time showing the transformation. And it's not sentimental or dramatic, this change, it's just a start, but slowly, almost automatically, he begins drawing Portugal. He draws himself alive again. But this begins not with art, but with life, with caring about his family, and especially the story of his grandfather.

I can see why this has been a prizewinner and so popular in Europe, especially in France, where Pedrosa lives. He used to be an animator, worked for Disney, on Hunchback of Notre Dame, which he says helped his "speed in execution." Beautifully drawn, with such intimacy, such a gorgeous artifact and testimony to spiritual renewal.

When do you begin caring about family history? Not as a young person, typically. I didn't begin collecting family artifacts until well into my forties. But coincidentally, a guy from California whose mother's name was Schaafsma emailed me yesterday, he saw some of my work, and has been talking to me about shared Dutch connections. I never would have cared about that kind of thing at all when I was in my twenties. But I now totally get Simon's drive to get to know his long gone grandfather. I highly recommend this beautiful, touching book, especially if you have ever been (as I have been a few times) "stuck" in your life. And I am so happy to have now been to Portugal with Simon through this book. And now I also have wonderful images to bring to my reading of Pessoa!

Çizimlerin çağrışımlar ile birbiri aralarında ve öykü boyunca kurduğu bağ da çok etkileyici.

PT Cyril Pedrosa é um autor fascinante. É impossível ler esta obra sem reconhecer o seu talento para construir narrativas gráficas. Tecnicamente, há muito pouco de negativo a apontar. Não sei quais são as suas influências, mas é evidente que compreende profundamente esta forma de contar histórias. Tudo aqui funciona notavelmente bem — desde os desenhos e as cores até à composição das sequências e dos painéis.

A história em si, no entanto, pode não agradar a todos. Um verdadeiro slice-of-life, acompanha Simon, um francês descendente de imigrantes portugueses, numa fase da vida em que a criatividade parece estagnada e a sua vida pessoal atravessa um período difícil e desencantado, deixando-lhe um vazio interior.

Ao aceitar um convite para um casamento de família em Portugal, Simon embarca numa jornada que o levará a descobrir mais sobre o seu presente e o seu passado.

Se gostas de conversas mundanas em ambiente familiar, vais adorar esta leitura. Não esperes mais do que isso.

Até mesmo eu, um verdadeiro proscrito no que toca a ambiente familiar, consegui apreciar a viagem de Simon — ainda que nem sempre...

EN Cyril Pedrosa is a fascinating author. It’s impossible to read this work without recognizing his talent for crafting graphic narratives. Technically, there’s very little to criticize. I don’t know what his influences are, but it’s clear that he has a deep understanding of this storytelling medium. Everything here works remarkably well—from the artwork and colors to the composition of sequences and panels.

The story itself, however, may not be for everyone. A true *slice-of-life*, it follows Simon, a Frenchman of Portuguese immigrant descent, at a stage in his life where his creativity seems stagnant and his personal life is going through a difficult and disenchanted period, leaving him with a sense of emptiness.

After accepting an invitation to a family wedding in Portugal, Simon embarks on a journey that will lead him to discover more about his present and his past.

If you enjoy mundane conversations in a family setting, you’ll love this read. Just don’t expect anything beyond that.

Even I, a true outcast when it comes to family environments, managed to appreciate Simon’s journey—though not always...

This is an absolutely gorgeous book! Simon Muchat is a comics artist who's lost his direction in life. He suffers from writer's block, and is stuck in a job that he hates. He feels like he’s going nowhere until he gets invited to appear at a comics convention in Portugal. His family emigrated to France from Portugal, and he hasn't been there since he was a kid. Once there, he feels the beginnings of a connection, and grows interested in his family history …

This is a very warm, rich graphic novel. Pedrosa has a wonderful facility for faces and expressions. The book is about Simon’s inner journey out of the rut in which he finds himself. Pedrosa heightens the feeling of being in a foreign country by having characters who speak untranslated Portuguese. We learn the language as Simon does: through gradual recognition of familiar words and phrases.

Simon and his family are a delight to spend time with. There's a very natural feel to the dialogue and the story’s pacing. All in all, this is one of the best graphic novels I’ve read in quite a while. Highly recommended!

I cherish this beautiful, warm, captivating book. An artist going through a creative/personal trough chafes against his girlfriend, his family, his clients, then finds new meaning in his life and work in his ancestral village in Portugal.

It's a story that could only have been told as a graphic novel; prose or even film wouldn't do it properly. There are very few words, and the majority of those are banal smalltalk. The artwork, taken as individual pieces, is for the most part not something to linger over. But put the words and drawings together, and Pedrosa performs feats of narrative magic which, fittingly, I can't describe with nouns and verbs. By not focusing on details of faces and places, we see past the surface, deep into each character's body language and attitude. So much of the personality and communication is done without words. At times the characters aren't even filled in, they float like ghosts over the backgrounds, creating moods and feelings beyond language and line.

Even in this English translation, quite a bit of dialogue remains in Portuguese, which I kind of understand, but it almost doesn't matter if you don't, since the point is to share the protagonist's experience of immersion in a new, foreign place.

I bought this book because I was mainly interested in a cartoon narrative about Portugal. It turns out that Portugal only accounts for around 1/4 of the book. But I was completely overwhelmed at how deeply moved, and inspired, I was by the story, more so than practically any novel I've read or film I've seen in a long time.

Ik had deze graphic novel al een tijdje op de leeslijst staan en meerdere keren tevergeefs in de catalogus van de bib opgezocht eer ik hem nu echt in handen kreeg. Het was weliswaar even wennen aan het formaat, en vooral aan het gewicht, maar het is een bloedmooie uitgave, in hardcover en mét een rood leeslint. Iets meer dan anderhalve kilo droog aan de haak: een boek dat je dus niet zomaar leest terwijl je op je rug in bed ligt. Totaal iets anders dan die eerdere worp van de hand van meester Pedrosa, Drie Schimmen, die ik vorige maand gelezen had en waardoor ik hooggespannen verwachtingen had voor deze klepper. Die zijn volledig ingelost.

Het is er meteen pal op: vanaf de eerste pagina word je het verhaal ingezogen, om er pas meer dan 250 pagina’s later terug uitgeworpen te worden. Het verhaal start met een scène die menigeen onder ons zelf meegemaakt heeft en die ook bij ondergetekende herinneringen oproept. De achterbank van een warme auto, te weinig plek, discussies, de vraag van de chauffeur om het stiller en rustiger te houden, … Jawel, de rit naar een verre vakantiebestemming in het warme zuiden. Je wordt zó in je eigen kindertijd gekatapulteerd. Halverwege het boek komt deze scène nogmaals terug, met de papa en de ondertussen zelf volwassen Simon in de wagen. Een melancholische scène waarin hij op twee pagina’s haarfijn het gevoel fileert en verwoordt of verstript, dat hij toen als jonge snaak weliswaar ervaarde - en dat de relatie met zijn papa deels definieert - maar niet echt kon plaatsen. Het is maar één van de scènes die blijven hangen en waar je na het lezen van deze graphic novel meermaals aan terugdenkt. Onbewust maak je nu en dan de denkoefening om het gebeurde op je eigen leven toe te passen.

De aandachtige kijker merkt onvoorstelbaar veel details in de tekeningen, naast de vele verschillende tekenstijlen, kleuren en lettertypes waarvan Pedrosa zich bedient. Over die twee laatste elementen is zorgvuldig nagedacht. Zo krijg je het droomachtige blauw, blauwwit en sepia van de korte, anekdotische herinneringen op gezette tijdstippen in het verhaal. Of tekstballonnen die plots een andere kleur krijgen. (Ik ben er niet uit of dat nu betekent dat Simon de conversaties op de achtergrond plots actief in zich opneemt, er écht aandacht besteedt, of bijvoorbeeld flarden tekst begint te herkennen of verstaan.) Een ander voorbeeld is de bladspiegel die verandert wanneer de tekenaar een telefoonconversatie weergeeft tussen Simon en zijn (ex-)vriendin. Dan schakelt hij over naar een strakke en egale compositie met twaalf gelijke kadertjes op één pagina, weliswaar met ietwat gerafelde en flou randen.

In sommige tekeningen zie je enkel een personage of een detail van een personage, in andere verschijnen er zoveel elementen en details dat je ogen tekort komt om alles in een oogopslag te absorberen. Het cameraperspectief wisselt bovendien heel vaak. In het eerste en het derde deel heeft dat niet zoveel impact en is het nooit echt spectaculair, in het tweede deel des te meer. Daarin grijpt hij vaak terug naar een vogelperspectief. Zo neem je als kijker enerzijds afstand van het gebeuren, maar anderzijds en tegelijk krijg je een overzicht en een unieke kijk op de omgeving waarin de personages zich bewegen.

Pedrosa is niet alleen een uitstekend en begenadigd tekenaar, maar tekent tegelijk voor het scenario. In plaats van chronologisch te werken, daagt hij de kijker-lezer uit met een complexe verhaalstructuur. Vooreerst is het relaas verdeeld in min of meer gelijke delen, die telkens een titel krijgen die als het ware verwijst naar een evangelie. Met dat verschil dan dat het er maar drie zijn in plaats van de bijbelse vier. De drie namen zijn dan wel weer Bijbels: Volgens Simon, Volgens Jean en Volgens Abel.

In elk van de hoofdstukken zie je het verhaal door de ogen van Simon maar wordt er gefocust op een ander personage dat een belangrijke rol gespeeld heeft in zijn leven en er onlosmakelijk deel van uitmaakt, ook al betreft het deels een ver verleden. Fijn detail: onder de drie namen heeft Pedrosa een benzinestation getekend, telkens uit een ander tijdperk. Auto’s en de weg vormen immers een niet onbelangrijke rode draad door de herinneringen en de inleiding van elk deel start in een voertuig.

In het verhaal worstelt hoofdpersonage Simon met de vragen des levens en gaat door een persoonlijke, existentiële crisis. De vragen die hij zich stelt en het feit dat hij er geen antwoorden op vindt, lijken hem te verlammen. Zo twijfelt hij of hij wel verder wil met zijn vriendin, stelt hij zich de vraag of het een goed idee is om samen een huis te kopen en geeft hij ongeïnspireerd en routineus les op een tekenschool, dit laatste terwijl zijn omgeving van hem verwacht dat hij aan een volgend boek begint. Wanneer hij ingaat op een uitnodiging om naar een klein stripfestival in Portugal af te zakken, zorgt dit voor een vonkje bij de lusteloze Simon. Toch duurt het nog een tijd vooraleer hij daar effectief iets mee doet. Het is eerder toevallig dat hij met zijn vader op de bots naar de trouw van een nicht afzakt en meerdere dagen met zijn familie doorbrengt. Zowel in Portugal - het land waar zijn familiegeschiedenis start - als in Bourgogne maakt de hernieuwde kennismaking met een aantal familieleden iets in hem wakker en duikt hij dieper in zijn roots en die familiegeschiedenis.

Het behoeft geen betoog dat striptekenaar Simon uit het verhaal niet eens van zo ver knipoogt naar de persoon van Pedrosa zelf. We zien bij aanvang een schrijver die zichzelf constant onderuit haalt en (de impact van) zijn werk minimaliseert (“Ik had die boeken met toewijding gemaakt. Zoals iemand die meubelen maakt of bloemen schikt. Op zich niets ergs.”) tot de zelfbewuste auteur die zichzelf (her)ontdekt en aan de slag gaat met zijn familiegeschiedenis. Geen pure autobiografie, maar autofictie. Toch denk je automatisch nu en dan aan Cyril Pedrosa en spring je van de graphic novel naar de auteur en terug.

Op het moment dat je dit werk uiteindelijk met een nostalgische en licht melancholische klap dicht slaat, heb je direct goesting om het opnieuw te lezen. Herlezen lijkt mij zelfs een must. Ikzelf had alvast het gevoel dat bepaalde zaken aan mijn aandacht ontsnapt waren en dat ik belangrijke details niet direct juist geïnterpreteerd had. En er is wel degelijk heel wat ruimte voor interpretatie: je wordt constant uitgedaagd om verder te denken, zaken in een nieuw daglicht te stellen én na te denken over je eigen leven en keuzes. Als je dan bepaalde passages opnieuw doorbladert, korte stukjes en conversaties herleest, besef je pas wat een parel je in handen hebt: alles wat een graphic novel in mijn ogen moet zijn.

Muhteşem bir grafik roman.
İlk okumamın ardından Karakarga tarafından dilimize de kazandırıldı...
Pedrosa, otobiyografik kurgu anlatımında, olmak, ait olmak, bağlı olmak, farkında olmak gibi değerleri muhteşem paneller, uçucu hissi veren çizgilerle anlatıyor.
Güçlü bir hikaye, güçlü çizimler, panel yerleşimleri, grafik tasarım, renk kullanımı okuru kitabın (hatta Portekiz'in) içine çekiyor...
Kitabı her açış, her çevrilen sayfa Pedrosa'nın dünyasını, hikayesini tekrar okuma isteği doğuruyor.
Tekrar tekrar okunacak benzeri az olan bir grafik roman...

Vidim po komentarima da je vecini ljudi Portugal dosao nakon (i) meni iznimnih Ekvinocija i veselim se otkrivanju Pedrose. Definitivno imam namjeru docepati se svega sto je taj covjek potpisao. Njegovi stripovi su eksplozija boja i boje su emocija. Predivno nesto.

Sam strip je prica o tridesetogodisnjem crtacu stripova koji se nalazi u prijelomnoj tocki svog zivota. Veza mu se raspada, taj crtacki posao je pod mentalnom blokadom - sve to prati egzistencijalni ponor pa i tjeskoba u umornoj potrazi za vlastitim identitetom. Rodjen je u drugoj generaciji portugalskih emigranata u Francuskoj i to svakako ima veze s njegovom potragom za tim necim "svojim". Da sad ne ulazim toliko u pricu, radije bih o bojama. Naime, svaka faza u zivotu, svako priblizavanje ili udaljavanje svojoj biti nosi jedna boja i nekoliko popratnih nijansi iste. Ako listate strip, mozete pojavom drugih boja dobiti dojam upotpunjavanja praznine, otkrivanje glavnog lika. Boje su toliko dominantne da zive u poglavljima i festival su za oci. Lude su mi sekvence npr. kada mu se tjeskoba prikrada ili kad ga melankolija poklapa kao val ili kad pocinje osjecati srecu, tu je, blizu je tom necemu. Odjednom bude prasak boja na papiru. Jako liricno, jako intimno i zacudno vizualno. I prestsne biti stripovski font, postane graficki kolaz i lirska crtica, u samom kresendu emocije. Cak i crtez pocinje liciti na sliku. Strasno mi se svidja to igranje s narativom ❤

Scene obiteljskih okupljanja, slusanja povijesti svoje obitelji - tako su nekako ljudske, tako uobicajene. Bas mi je prenio onaj osjecaj cudjenja, iscekivanja, novih mirisa, specificnog humora obiteljskog... i njegovi su mi komentari i dozivljaji doslovce arhetipska prica.

Jako mi se svidio Portugal njegovim ocima, vracanje svom porijeklu i ta neka opsutenost, melodija jezika (super mi je sto dijelovi uopce nisu prevedeni pa se opet prenese osjecaj pogubljenosti glavnog lika koji ima jezicnu barijeru unatoc tome sto konacno prepoznaje nesto kao svoje) ali smijeh i zurba i glazba ionako ne trebaju prijevod. I opet ludi prasak boja koje nosi ljeto i dusevni mir, spokojna sreca. Naravno i ta otvorenost i prihvacanje koju mozes imati kad si blizu svog "plemena" ma koliko dugo da ih nisi vidio i zasipanje gozbama i vinom su bas prekrasne. Drago mi je da se Sim pronasao, cini mi se da sam se i ja.

Portekiz benim çok uzun zamandır okuduğum ilk çizgi roman oldu. Bu kitapla da çizgiromanı ne kadar özlediğimi farkettim. Gençliğimde ev çizgi romandan geçilmezdi ancak (emeğe sonsuz saygı duymakla birlikte) sanırım artık 40 TL'ye 100 sayfalık bir çizgi roman alarak bir günde bitirmektense daha uzun süre okuyup keyfine vardığım 600-700 sayfalık bir romanı tercih ediyorum.

Sanıyorum bugüne kadar 30'dan fazla ülke gezdim ama 2010 yılında Porto'ya yaptığım ilk seyahatten beri Portekiz bende çok değişik, çok ilginç bir tat bırakmıştır. Ne dili başka bir dile benzer, ne yaşayış şekilleri. Orada zaman durmuş gibidir. İnsanları yaşlı, vitrinlerdeki ürünler bile 80'lerden kalma gelir. Çektiğiniz bir fotoğrafı siyah beyaz yapsanız 50 yıl önce mi çekildi, bugün mü bilemezsiniz. Ne mutlu ki 2018 yılında da bu kitabın geçtiği Lizbon'a gitme fırsatı buldum. O yüzden bu çizgi roman, herhangi bir (örneğin Marvel, DC) çizgiromanın aksine içimi ısıttı.

Çizimlerin ne kadar muhteşem olduğunu söylememe gerek yok sanırım. Cyril Pedrosa'nın farklı bir stili var. Aslında gelişigüzel çizgiler gibi geliyor ama o çizgilerin bütünü güzel bir kompozisyon oluşturuyor. Ortamlar sizi Lizbon'un sokaklarında, hatta köylerinde hissettiriyor. Portekiz sokaklarında bir dolaşın, siz de Simon'un içinden geçen şu cümleyi hissedeceksiniz. Biraz kederli, ateşli ve iyiliksever. Ansızın gelen insanlara sarılma isteği. Sanki şu balıkçıları önceden tanıyormuşum gibi. Yüklerindeki ağırlık, kollarındaki yorgunluk. Dostlarım, kardeşlerim.

Ve Sevgi ve utanç tüm göçmen ailelerin mottosu olabilir

Özellikle Claire, Simon'u arabayla aldıktan sonraki sahneye bayıldım. Havadan çekimler çok güzel. Daha önce sohbet esnasında havanın kararma evrelerini yumuşak bir şekilde çizgiromana bu kadar iyi yansıtanı görmemiştim.

Gelelim olumsuz bulduğum yanlara. Hikaye çok dağınık başlıyor ve sahneler çok ani değişiyor. O kadar ki bazı yerlerde acaba sayfa mı atladım diye geriye bakmak zorunda kalıyorsunuz. Basımı ve çeviriyi beğenmediğimi itiraf etmeliyim. Bazı Fransız aksanlı yerler güzel oturmamış. Font kesinlikle iyi değil. Özellikle Simon'un içinden konuştuğu yerler Times New Roman. Hani Excel'de bir dikdörtgen vardır da içine "Add Text" dersiniz aynı öyle.

Bu arada belirtmem gerek ki kitabın Türkçe versiyonunun da yarısı Portekizce. Evet, okurken Simon'un derdini anlatamama, yabancı bir ülkenin dilini anlayamama konusunda yaşadığı zorluklara ortak oluyorsunuz ama açıkçası arkaplanda konuşulan Portekizce diyalogları da belki bir * işaretiyle aşağıda okumak isterdim. Bir kısmını elimde telefon Google Translate'ten çevirdim ama baktım ki hikayeyi kaçırıyorum, vazgeçtim.

Hikaye samimiyet olarak mükemmel ama biraz daha okuyucuyu içine almasını isterdim. Yine de tavsiye eder miyim, elbette ki ederim!

"Portugal" es una recomendación ideal para entender qué influencia tiene el color en la capacidad de transmitir de un cómic. En el arte secuencial, los paisajes, los estados de ánimo, las emociones le llegan siempre al lector por dos canales, guión y dibujo, y creo que en esta obra lo hacen más por medio del segundo, especialmente por la maravillosa aplicación del color. Es, sin duda, su orden más sobresaliente.
Encuentro similitudes con la obra de Paco Roca, tanto en temática como en el aspecto gráfico, aunque creo que el guión no rinde en la misma medida. Dividida en tres capítulos y con un joven escritor de protagonista, la historia es una indagación vital del árbol familiar, hijo, padre y abuelo dando título a cada parte, con la fascinación que ejerce la tierra portuguesa en el origen de todo. El protagonista sufre una crisis creativa que en realidad es personal, un vacío existencial que le acucia hasta romper su relación de pareja y del que solo encontrará alivio en la búsqueda de los orígenes de su familia en la lejana Portugal.
La obra está creada con delicadeza y con gusto, pero me ha parecido mal medida y, sobre todo, excesivamente larga. Sufre de una notoria indefinición, a veces no se sabe adónde va. Tras una primera parte de tono intimista, centrada en el protagonista, su crisis personal y la infancia en Portugal, la segunda lo deja como mero testigo de un relato sobre las relaciones familiares situado en Francia, para acabar en la tercera encontrándose a sí mismo de nuevo en una añorada Portugal rural. La historia podría aliviarse de al menos un tercio de su longitud, sobre todo en esa segunda parte tan ajena, sin que perdiera nada, ni siquiera el tema de la inmigración francesa tan presente en ella, pues los grandes momentos de este cómic se bastan por sí mismos para comunicar todo lo importante con que cuenta esta obra. La falta de regularidad y de ritmo, así como una cierta indefinición de personajes (admito haberme hecho un pequeño lío con los presentes en la celebración familiar) impiden que la emoción se asiente lo necesario como para hacer más mella.
Un cómic, en todo caso, muy recomendable.

Το άλμπουμ Portugal, πανέμορφη χαρτόδετη έκδοση σε μεγάλο φορμάτ, είναι ένα έργο του Pedrosa που τιμά την ένατη τέχνη. Ημι-αυτοβιογραφικό το πλαίσιο, ο κεντρικός ήρωας Σιμόν, Γάλλος με πορτογαλικές ρίζες, βρίσκεται σε μια ανέμπνευστη φάση της ζωής του όπου απαξιώνει τη δουλειά του ως σκιτσογράφου ενώ ταυτόχρονα αφήνει τη σχέση του στο έλεός της, η οποία οδηγείται μοιραία στον χωρισμό. Καλεσμένος στο γάμο μιας πρώτης ξαδέρφης του την οποία αμυδρά θυμάται, ταλαντευόμενος ανάμεσα στο να παρευρεθεί ή όχι, αποφασίζει να πάει τελικά μαζί με τον πατέρα του, ενδιαφέρων και εσωστρεφή businessman. Σ��ον γάμο λοιπόν και στη διαμονή στο κτήμα του θείου του, αρχίζει να ξετυλίγεται το κουβάρι της οικογενειακής του φατρίας και η αναζήτηση των ριζών του. Η αναζήτηση αυτή τον οδηγεί στην Πορτογαλία, όπου έχει να πάει από παιδί. Εκεί αισθάνεται μόνος αλλά και σαν στο σπίτι του.

Το βιβλίο διαπνέεται από μια μεσογειακότητα που μου ήρθε πολύ οικεία, το σχέδιο του Pedrosa είναι τόσο καλό που στεκόμουν για ώρα σε διάφορα strip να θαυμάσω τη νευρικότητα, το μπλέξιμο των χρωμάτων, τη «φασαρία» και τη ζωντάνια του, τα τραγουδιστά σχεδόν περιγράμματα, που όλα αυτά μαζί απέδωσαν την αλεγκρία των τόπων και των έντονων μεσογειακών ανθρώπων που παρελαύνουν στην ιστορία. Φωνακλάδες θείοι, τσατιλιάρες θείες, μερακλούδες ξαδέρφες και γείτονες, άφθονο κρασί και πόρτο, οι περισσότεροι μ’ ένα τσιγάρο στο χέρι, μπλέξιμο γαλλικών και πορτογαλικών στους διαλόγους και μια αναζήτηση σε ιστορίες παππούδων και προ-παππούδων για να βρεθεί η αρχή του νήματος της οικογενειακής ιστορίας. Και όπως φαίνεται, όλα αυτά αποτέλεσαν τη σκουντιά για να επανέλθει η έμπνευση στον συγγραφέα και να ξαναδημιουργήσει.

Portugal has a special place in one of my tiny lists; "have visited and gonna visit again countries"

And I felt the streets, atmosphere, warm people of this beautiful country through this graphic novel once again.

Perfect colors, perfect drawings.

The story is also absorbing even if it is a kind of cliche; A free spirit man who doesnt know what to do with his life investigates family history to know what to his life..etc..

What i wanna say is I would not like this graphic novel that much if it didnt take place in Portugal..

İlk ciddi grafik roman okuma girişimim. Dolayısıyla değerlendirme yapma konusunda biraz çekimserim. Öncelikle bunalım bir girişe ve soluk bir renk paletine sahip olduğunu söyleyebilirim. Muhtemelen romana adını veren ülkenin genel görünümüne ve sarı sıcak yaz mevsimine bir gönderme olarak yorumlayabilirim.

Bezgin çizer Simon’un iş ve özel hayatındaki açmazlar, giderek sıkıştıran üretememe sendromu, etrafında yaşananlara kayıtsız kalan tavırları, onu çekilmez bir kişiliğe çevirir. Amaçsızlığı ve başarısızlığına yalnızlık da eklenir. Varoluş sorgulaması kaçınılmaz hale gelir.

Portekiz’in geçmişindeki zor zamanlar, bazı karakterler ve konuşmalar aracılığıyla dile getirilirken iki dil iki ülke arasında kalmış nesillerin benzerlik ve çelişkileri küçük anekdotlarla birlikte verilir. Aidiyet eksikliği ile göçmen tedirginliğinin birbirini besleyen zararlı ilişkisi hikayenin içine incelikle yerleşir.

Kentli modern insanların benzer dertleri, iş hayatının ortak problemleri, yaş almanın getirdiği gelecek endişeleri çizimlerin ve metnin arasına hissettirmeden girer. Köklere ulaşma kazısı, uzak geçmişi yakalama çabası, hep bir boşlukta kalma tasası sürer gider.

Görselliğine değinmek gerekirse, başta belirttiğim genel düşünceye ek olarak özellikle gece ve karanlık tasvirlerini, uzak plan çizimlerini, su ile birleşen resimlerini beğendiğimi ifade edebilirim. Son olarak kısa bir sürede bitirmeme rağmen içime işleyen bir şeyler bıraktığını itiraf etmeliyim.

After reading Portugal, I immediately added more Pedrosa to my TBR list. Great style, in both story and art. This tale winds through geography and family history, changing perspectives and focus in the story to different family members.
The main story revolves around Simon, an uninspired artist living in France. He visits Portugal for a cousin's wedding and reconnects with family members he hasn't seen in decades, thus discovering himself and finding deeper inspiration. A familiar trope, but a slightly different take - a compelling story, beautifully illustrated.

Bonita historia sobre alienación, desarraigo y reecontrar la ilusión por la vida donde, más que el guión, deslumbra el dibujo y el absoluto dominio de Cyril Pedrosa sobre qué recursos utilizar en cada secuencia. Los colores planos y los trazos bien delimitados para plasmar conversaciones serias; los trazos al descubierto, casi fantasmales, y unas acuarelas sueltas para ilustrar los paseos del protagonista entre la gente entregada a sus quehaceres cotidianos; el manejo de una multitud de gamas cromáticas para subrayar las emociones de cada escena; la luz con la que se representa ese Portugal que descubre el protagonista después de décadas de desconocimiento. Todo un hallazgo.

Wow, illustrationen är den stora behållningen, i övrigt OK men inte mer. Att få en glimt av Portugal och portugisiska är alltid trevligt.

Ik betrap mezelf er weer op dat ik bij graphic novels met veel tekst in mijn Jommekesmodus geraak: lezen om het verhaal en de tekeningen als achtergrond beschouwen. En dat mag je eigenlijk niet doen bij deze pareltjes van tekeningen. Pedrosa maakt prachtige valavond- en nachttekeningen in dit boek, bijvoorbeeld.

Het is een kleiner verhaal dan de vorige twee boeken die ik van Pedrosa las, maar dan ook weer consequent in zijn zoektocht naar een klein geluk. Verhaaltechnisch is het minder uitdagend, maar Pedrosa blijft een aanrader.

Ve başlayıp, böyle güzel anlatılıp biten sayfalar için. Bir vakitler - eskiden - TRT’de bir program izlemiştim. Doğduğu yerden göç ettirilenlerle ilgili. 3. Kuşak yani torunlar aile köklerinin peşine düşüyorlardı. Portekiz işte böyle bir yolculuk. Simon, Jean ve Abel’in hikayesini Pedrosa, sonunda okurda tam da Portekizce bir kelime bırakacak şekilde anlatmış: saudade!

Il primo terzo non mi ha detto nulla, dal matrimonio in poi mi è piaciuto.
L'ultima generazione, ormai francese, va a cercare le proprie origini in Portogallo, ritrovando parenti più o meno entusiasti.
Perché due persone partirono per la Francia e solo una ritornò? Perché il fratello più giovane ha accettato i doveri tipici del maggiore? Può l'ultimo erede riavvicinare la famiglia?

Portugal by Cyril Pedrosa is truly a masterpiece.
Pedrosa tells the story and the existential path that Simon follows, one of the protagonists and the narrator of Portugal. Simon bottled everything up and when things start to change drastically, he tries to escape from the problems and acts egoistic and not self aware.
The opportunity to travel to Portugal for work really changed his life: memories come back, colours are more and more vibrant and warm and thanks to the unique techniques of Pedrosa, Simon merges with his surroundings and he listens carefully to Portuguese, a language so difficult but fascinating for him.
The style of Pedrosa which is absolutely stunning helps with dealing with nostalgia, past and the unknown. The few days he spends in Portugal have changed Simon forever. Portugal in fact isn’t just a background used to describe Simon crisis and experiences but rather a place that gives the protagonist new emotions, new points of view, new influences.
This can be seen in the third and last act of the graphic novel where, with greater emphasis, Pedrosa decides to let Simon walk freely through the paper, without the “oppressive” panels. He tries to grasp everything he sees in the diary in which he draws, he tries to understand locals and their lives. He feels free, finally, and he breaks the concept of “homeland=home”. Truly a masterpiece.

Onpas taas vaikeeta. Aivan upeaa maisemien ja interiöörien kuvausta ja värien käyttöä. Useat sivut ovat kuin omia taideteoksiaan: sekä koko sivun kokoiset piirrokset että värimaailmaltaan yhtenäisen kokonaisuuden muodostavat pienet stripit. Sen sijaan ihmiset on piirretty epämiellyttävän näköisiksi epämiellyttävällä tavalla. Jännä, kenties harkittu kontrasti ympäristön ja ihmishahmojen välillä.

Itse tarina hyppii ja pomppii, enkä ymmärtänyt näkökulmanvaihdoksia. Näkökulma ei nähdäkseni edes vaihdu, joten en ymmärtänyt pointtia ollenkaan. Kaikki olennaiset henkilöt ovat miehiä, eikä naiskuvakaan saa minulta kiitosta. Omien juurten etsimisestä ja vieraan kielen opettelusta olisi voinut kirjoittaa koskettavamminkin. Päähenkilö tuntui olevan kiinnostunut vain sukunsa miehistä ja näiden tarinoista ja niiden vaikutuksesta itseensä.

Jotenkin aivan erityisen ranskalainen tämän albumin miesnäkökulma. Yleismaailmallisestihan valkoinen cis-mies on normi, mutta Pedrosan valkoinen cis-mies on niin pirun ranskalainen. En osaa tai jaksa selittää. En ole kategorisesti oman navan ympärillä pyörimistä vastaan, koska mikäs sen nautinnollisempaa. Mutta jos tekee autofiktiivisen albumin, jossa pyörittelee omaa pahaa oloaan ja syitä siihen, voin kyllä hyvin täältä sivusta huudella, että ei ole kovin pitkälle päästy, jos kaikesta pohdiskelusta huolimatta on edelleen noin kykenemätön näkemään toisia ja välittämään omien tekojen seurauksista ja vaikutuksesta muihin. Ehkä oma olokin on kytköksissä siihen, miten kohtelee muita. Oisko mitään?

Lisäksi kaikilla on koko ajan kessuvation suupielessä. En kestä, miten kliseisen ranskalaista. Tulee huono olo ja pää kipeäksi pelkästä lukemisesta ja katsomisesta. Aaaaaaa hyi.

Tämä on ehkä vähän asiatonta, mutta googlasin Cyril Pedrosan, ja hän näyttää uudessa promokuvassaan kuumalta homolta. Olin vähän yllättynyt luettuani Portugalin. Mutta ei pitäisi toisten ulkonäköä kommentoida.

Sarjakuva-albumi on muuten ollut varmaan aikamoinen päänsärky kääntäjälle. Suomenkielisessä käännöksessä käytetyt kielet ovat suomi, portugali ja englanti. Ranska on siis käännetty suomeksi, mutta portugali ja englanti on jätetty alkuperäiseen asuunsa. Iso osa ideasta katoaa käännöksessä, koska ranska ja portugali kuuluvat samaan kieliperheeseen ja useilla sanoilla on sama kanta. Kielten puhujilla on siis edes jonkinlainen mahdollisuus ymmärtää toisiaan alkeellisesti. Suomella ja portugalilla taas ei ole mitään yhteistä, joten suomenkielinen toteutus ontuu. Lisäksi varsinkin monet huudahdukset ovat suomenkielisessä versiossa epäuskottavia.

Oli miten oli, luin siis kolmasosan teoksesta portugaliksi. Espanjan ja ranskan pohjalta ymmärtää yllättävän hyvin. Hämmentävä kokonaisuus silti. Portugalin säilyttäminen ja kääntämättä jättäminen kuvaavat uskoakseni hyvin alkuperäisessä ranskankielisessä teoksessa sitä, millaista on elää tuntematonta kieltä puhuvien ympäröimänä. Tosin moni portugalinkielisistäkin lopulta puhui ranskaa. Olen ihan mahdottoman kiinnostunut niistä valtaan ja etuoikeuksiin liityvistä kysymyksistä, joita moni vain valtakieltä tai -kieliä puhuva ei tunnista lainkaan. Haluaisin lukea aiheesta kriittisellä otteella kirjoitettua kamaa.

Oli muuten toivottavasti viimeinen kerta, kun luen sarjakuvaa puhelimen näytöltä. Ehkä olen byhelimen takia tulkinnut kaiken väärin.

Hermoso libro sobre la soledad, la familia y las raíces. Además, el autor usa la trama para reflexionar sobre las diferencias culturales entre Francia y Portugal, el primero un país de costumbres anglosajonas, más individualistas, mientras que el segundo es latino, donde la familia está muy unida y son la principal fuente de interacción social. Siendo latino, pude ver en los parientes de Simón a mis parientes, y en su forma de ser y de vivir, la forma de ser y de vivir de mi gente.
Me identifiqué muchísimo con Simon y su padre, que prefieren evitar a la familia, pero cuando por fin la ven, la disfrutan mucho, incluso si las reuniones toman giros no tan agradables.
Además de lo cálida y bien llevada que está la historia, el arte es muy bello. Sin tener trazos exactos, se las arregla para ser muy detallado, poder identificar todo lo que está pasando, identificar a cada personaje sin equivocación, aún si sólo estás viendo siluetas. Además de que los recursos de color y entintado se las arreglan muy bien para reflejar cosas que suceden al mismo tiempo, y cuando alguien está hablando en portugués y cuando en francés.
Por donde se le vea, un libro encantador. Quizá pueda aburrir a quienes buscan historias más elaboradas, o más acción. De lo contrario, completamente recomendable.

Pedrosa'nın çizgilerine, renklerine, bölüm bölüm anlatılarına hayran olmamak mümkün değil.

Kendisi ile ilk tanışmam Ekinokslar ile olmuş, inanılmaz beğenmiştim. Hatta küçük bir itiraf olabilir; Ekinoksları konu açısından daha çok beğendiğimi söyleyebilirim. Ancak Portekiz de tam olarak hislerime tercüman ve ödülü de sonuna kadar hakeden bir çizgi roman olmuş.

Yıllar evvel bir seminerde görev almış, Portekizli hala devam eden dostlar edinmiştim. O zaman Portekiz'de bulunmamış bir kelime dahi Portekizce bilmeden onların sıcaklığını hissetmiş, gönül bağı kurmuştum. Şimdi tüm taşlar geçmiş sohbetlerim ile yerine oturdu diyebilirim.

Ayrıca Pedrosa çok 'insan' çok 'cesaretli' . Onun bu hali ile kaleme döktükleri beni epey etkiledi.

Yalnızlığı, göçmenliği, içinden hiçbir şey gelmemesini, Portekizce'nin sıcaklığını, özlem ve daha pek çok insani duyguları Portekiz'de bulmak mümkün.
