"Through me the way into the suffering city. Through me the way into the eternal pain. Through me the way through the Lost People." Prepare yourself, gentle reader, for within this book, the angel Obadiah and his reluctant demon guide travel the length and breadth of Hell's nine circles and commune with 25 souls as part of a census of the damned. Angeline Hawkes, co-author of Night Wraith , brings her prodigious talents to bear on these twisted tales of sin and depravity. Bear witness to the fate of those who indulge in violence, greed, and other deadly sins throughout history. Abandon all hope, you who enter here!
Overall, I enjoyed Miss Hawkes new book/anthology, although I felt it to be uneven at times. It is, essentially, an interlocking anthology in the same vein as the Tales from the Crypt or Twilight Zone movies, in that there is a larger tale occurring throughout but it is interspersed with smaller stories before coming to a final conclusion. It seems that an angel of God has been instructed to take a census of Hell. He must go through each circle and find one person to tell their tale of how they got to Hell in the first place. It makes for an interesting premise and some pretty neat stories as well. As I said, a few were less than stellar but as a whole the tales were quite varied and brought an interesting take to some of the cardinal sins. The book is short and won't take long once you get going, so I'd suggest picking it up on a lazy Saturday if you want something a little different. And, hey, if enjoy it as I did maybe think of posting a quick review to help out a budding author. Good effort, Miss Hawkes. I'll keep an eye out for you in the future.
