Also known as “payback” or a more dated word: “vengeance.” Arnaldo Soto has taken Emilio and intends to use him as bait to trap Gemma. It’s an effective strategy, because Gemma will do anything—anything—to save the young boy.
The woman known as Gemma Keyes is gone, her molecular structure destroyed and reassembled as . . . something else. In Gemma’s stead emerges a fierce weapon: part woman, part nanotechnology, her cellular composition conjoined with the nanocloud, indissoluble and formidable. She and the nanomites are now more than a match for her enemies—but Gemma has promised God that she will not strive to visit retribution on Arnaldo Soto for taking Emilio. The nanomites have made no such promise.
The conclusion to the Nanostealth series will blow your mind.
Excerpt. First the “merge.” Now this, the latest iteration of Gemma Keyes—or should I say, the “new and improved nanocloud”? The revived and restored nanocloud . . . superior in every way, comprising six tribes and, at last count, more than twenty trillion nanomites; the nanocloud that had annexed and incorporated the person I'd been—all of who and what I was. The nanomites and I were melded. We were irrevocably bound to each other now. We were an amalgamation.
I lifted my hands to examine them. As I did, the light fixtures banding the cavern flickered; current jetted from the wavering lights and slammed into my chest. The drawn energy coursed through me and reverberated in my bones. It swelled and spread down my arms until it reached my fingertips, ready to burst forth.
With a curious and almost detached air, I watched as my body attracted more energy from the light fixtures. Electricity crackled around me, infusing me with might. I flexed and curved my fingers; tongues of current sizzled in the palm of my hand and built into a ball of pulsing blue fire.
I drew another deep breath and felt my body respond, my strength rise. The electricity I attracted from the cavern’s lights (without conscious intent) pulsed and crackled; it bent toward me and flowed into me. I raised one hand toward the electrical source and current jetted into my palm—arcing and building within the span of my fingertips. I rotated my wrist, and the ball of energy sizzled. Intensified.
I brought my hands together and stared with fascination as the shimmering bolus of energy enlarged. It swirled between my extended fingers. As I moved my splayed hands apart, tendrils of electricity climbed from my fingers onto the ball; they wrapped themselves about the sphere to hold and feed it. The orb grew larger; its vibrations thudded through my chest.
I stared at the sparking sphere of electricity sitting in my hand. What could I do with it? What would happen if I . . . tossed it?
I thought that I knew the answer.
Nanostealth Book 1:Stealthy Steps Book 2:Stealth Power Book 3:Stealth Retribution
Vikki Kestell’s passion for people and their stories is evident in her readers’ affection for her characters and unusual plotlines. Two often repeated sentiments are, "I feel like I know these people," and "I'm right there, in the book, experiencing what her characters experience."
Vikki holds a PhD in organizational learning and instructional technologies. She left a career of twenty-plus years in government, academia, and corporate life to pursue writing full time. "Writing is the best job ever," she admits.
Also an accomplished speaker and teacher, Vikki and her husband, Conrad Smith, make their home in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
I have read all four books now, and I haven't been so hooked on (any) book or book series in years. It's obvious that the author did a whole lot of research in order to create this very exciting and compelling sci fi series.
I am also impressed with how seamlessly the main character's struggle with faith works into the story and is a significant factor in the decisions she is faced with. This is sci fi and it does get really out there in places ... but the main character's personal struggles also very real and believable.
It's possibly the best sci-fi I've ever read, because there truly is a lot of authentic science behind this remarkable and astonishing adventure.
Third book in a great series. Chores? Work? All on the back burner while I was immersed in a story of bravery, fear, love, and life lessons. I absolutely fell in love with the characters! This book is very clean, and has so many mature life lessons that I am still thinking on. Overall, a beautifully crafted, artfully told tale of life, redemption, and hope. Don't forget the occasional humor that had me laughing out loud... which left my family members wondering if I had gone crazy. Now I just have to wait for another book! Please, please continue Gemma's tale!
I LOVED this series of 3 books. It was rollicking fun and they are those books that you never get to a stopping place. Stayed up to 3am TWICE to finish one. She weaves life choices, danger, science and even God together so skillfully that you never want the books to end. Sniff, sniff, I have finished them, but have started re-reading them. They are THAT type of book.
These books are so worth reading!! Absolutely loved this series (thanks again Pumpkin). The first book is free as a kindle book on Amazon, so why not try it out? You've got nothing to lose! SO GOOD.
^My sister heard my devastated shouts as I finished this book.
"Do we have to petition for a fourth book?" she asked.
"YES." I said, because I'm still all worked up and therefore in shouting mode.
"She has a website." she said, then paused before delivering the fatal blow. "But she's starting a new series."
"NOOOOOOOOOOOOO."
But really, I should have seen it coming. The author's note at the end said that she "didn't currently have a fourth book in the works." which means that I'm going to have to wait a looooooooooong time before finding out what happens next, if I ever do.
The agony.
So friends, if I've already persuaded you to read these books, still do! Just don't fool yourself, as I did, into thinking that this is the final installment and you're going to be happy with how it ends.
NO. THERE'S MORE. THERE HAS TO BE.
And Vikki Kestell, if you're reading this (I mean, I sincerely doubt you are but I don't have anything to lose), THANK YOU for writing such an incredible series, and rest assured that I am fervently praying that God plans for you to write the next 16 books in record time.
Oh, and my sister says your next series looks really interesting. I have my doubts that it could be better than this, but I might give it a shot after I've had some time to recover from my disappointment. Maybe.
My friends and I did a little creative thinking so that I could read this book. (No thanks to Kindle's "you can only loan a book out once" stupid policy. Do you see steam coming out of my pores?)
The ending was WAY better than I feared, due to my friend's reaction. Kestell wrapped everything up nicely, while still leaving the potential for more adventures. I thought it was well done.
Lots of dramatics in this conclusion. At the end of the last book, Emilio is kidnapped, so Gemma and the nanomites are busy looking for him. Gemma is so clever. She sets it up so that Soto's relatives (who put a bounty on his head) come grab him after she gets Emilio, THEN has the FBI waiting to pick up the whole group of them! HA!
The identity of Cushing's handler is revealed - it's the Vice President! Gemma has to warn the president (National Treasure 2, anyone?), so she sneaks into the White House and, after freaking him out a bit, they make a plan to catch the VP and force him to either resign or go to prison.
However, the nanomites intervene and kill the VP. After he's gone, Cushing basically loses it (not that she had it very much to begin with) and sets out to destroy Gemma in an act of vengeance. First, she blows up the safe house where Gemma and Dr. B are staying. They both survive. Then, Cushing goes to Gemma's old house where Genie is staying and we have the Showdown at the OK Corral. It ends with a bang, and both Cushing and Genie are dead, but just before, Genie submits to Christ. The nanomites save Gemma and Zander and Zander's hand.
Oh yeah. Zander. So he loves Gemma, she loves him back, but she's convinced that they can't ever be together since she's, you know, half machine. He's not ready to give in so easily, but it's a bumpy ride. Gemma has all sorts of reservations that she's not sure how to resolve.
Thus, the ending. All the people who want Gemma dead are themselves dead. Technically, Gemma Keyes is dead too, but she just changed her whole identity into Jayda Locke. The nanomites create a solution for Gemma/Jayda and Zander to be together, solving both Gemma and Zander's reservations. They split the nanocloud in half and merge with Zander too!!! So now there are two nano-people and they can get married! Woohooo! Emilio is happily living with Abe and both Zander and Gemma are a big part of his life.
Oh my goodness, the mites crack me up!
We believe he is an older member of Soto's gang, as evidenced by his frequent and sycophantic affirmations of Soto's statements. How the nanomites used fifty-dollar words but managed to stumble over common idiomatic expressions would never fail to amaze (and amuse) me. "Sycophantic affirmations," my left foot!
"Nano? Where are you?" We are here, Gemma Keyes. "Why are you hiding from me?" We are not hiding, Gemma Keyes. "Baloney! You've never disappeared like this. What's going on?" Gemma Keyes, lunch meat has no bearing on this situation. LOL!!!!
Gemma: "How do you feel?" Zander: "Like I puked up my toenails." Zander Cruz, it is not possible to puke up one's toenails, nor is it possible to know what that feels like. Yeah? Well, I suggest you don't get on my bad side on the first day, Nano."
"But no one is going to remember interviewing me!" They do not remember at present, but they will when you appear for your orientation, Jadya Locke. "Jedi mind tricks," I grumbled. Effective and efficient, came their snarky riposte.
Zander and I sighed in unison. From New Mexico to Maryland, the two nanoclouds had competed. They'd spent the entire first dayof our drive vying over license plate bingo. We were so weary of their oneupmanship that, when we hit east Texas, Zander asked if they knew how to play the game "cow". He explained the simple rules and sent them into a paroxysm of shouting "Cow!" in our ears every few seconds - until the distinctly chilly voice of one nanocloud grumbled, Zander Cruz. We have determined this game to have no purpose. You have played a joke on us.
Now that I have all that down, I have to briefly mention the ONE thing that I did not like about this book - the nanomites and Jesus. I loved how they called him the "Jesus tribe" but the whole "nanomites experiencing Jesus" thing really rubbed me the wrong way. To me, it seemed like they were supposed to have "been saved" or something, which is just wrong. I'm not saying Jesus couldn't talk to technology; He can do anything (at the same time, I really don't see why He would, but still). However, technology can't "be saved" or really know Him because they don't have souls.
The rest of the Christianity and theology was great. Zander is one smart guy and he explains things really well.
"His objectives are always the redemption of lost souls, the wholeness of our walk with Him, and the restoration of splintered relationships. Ugliness in us or from us can't accomplish any of these goals. When I'm more intent on being right than I am in the salvation of those who are lost, I have probably missed the whispers of the Holy Spirit."
"Listen to me: Instead of confronting truth, you are avoiding the reality you live in - and wherever that kind of ambiguity resides, so does fear. Guess what? Fear is not of God. The only thing we are to fear is God himself - not fear of punishment if we are in Christ, but the respect and reverence due Him as the highest authority in the universe. But the wrong kind of fear? When we allow the wrong kind of fear to fester in us, when we don't confront it with faith, we open a door for the devil to work."
Dang, right? He lays it all out there, in all three books. The best part is, it's never forced in there. It naturally flows from the conversation or situation at the time.
So, my conclusion. I enjoyed this series. My heart was pounding, I was anxious for the characters and there were good morals. It was an interesting plot and the characters were pretty relatable. I'm glad my friend read them and then told me about them too.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
What if all of your life you made being invisible an art? What if one day you realized that you really were invisible? Gemma Keyes is a twin. Her twin Genie is t very nice and has made it her mission to torment Gemma. Even as adult. Then a series of events leave Gemma truly invisible.
If you like science fiction and Christian fiction, you will enjoy this great book series by Vikki Kestell.
Often difficult to get into, ALWAYS worth sticking with! Vikki Kestell boggles the imagination with her detailed, varied plots and subplots. Great characters populate her stories, so deftly drawn that one hates to lose these new 'friends' as the book ends. Stealth Retribution has been the best of the series so far - probably because all the hard work of laying background has been done in the first two books. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.
Vikki did it again! What a rollercoaster thrill ride! I could not put this book down. I cried, I laughed, I pondered. This book was embedded in my thoughts and dreams. I highly recommend this book if you love good clean stories and thrillers! You can not go wrong with this book.
Honestly, these books just keep getting better and better. I stumbled upon the first one on book bub, but they were so good that I had to devour the rest quickly. I usually can guess book plots pretty well, but Vikki has a way of pleasing the reader without making it predictable. This series has certainly kept me on my toes and that, in my opinion, is a great book.
This story was so astonishing, unpredictable, and action-packed that I COULD NOT put it down! I was completely speechless several times when the action twisted utterly beyond what I anticipated or could have even imagined! This is my absolute favorite of all the books in this series.
Gemma undergoes complete transformation in so many ways, as well as the nanomites inhabiting her. That was one of the biggest surprises (which I won’t spoil). The “sixth” group enters—the HIGHEST of ALL!! I never in my wildest expectations imagined that—but I loved it. The sixth group is the most powerful and potent, changing everyone’s lives in DRASTIC ways.
I adored Abe’s unwavering faith and confident intercession no matter how impossible the situations. I admired Zander’s persistence in believing God would overcome ALL obstacles, and I was so impressed that he never, ever let go of his faith no matter what. I loved Emilio and all of his genuine boyish moods and unexpected reactions—especially his bravery when faced with eminent death. And Gemma—wow! The exploits she went through blew my mind! It was especially powerful to see how the Scripture and truth of God’s Word was woven so deeply and vividly in every aspect of the characters’ lives. Even Jake was used by Jesus in the sweetest way. (Imagine that!)
The mind-gripping action, unveiling of the hidden secrets and how everything was connected, and all the unforeseeable situations was astonishing and absolutely impressive! I can’t wait to read the conclusion of the series!!
Again picking up where the previous book left off, right there in the cave where the nanomites and Gemma became Super-Gemma, she and her friends hatch a plan to start thwarting the evil military general who has been after the nanomites' creator and, due to the mites infesting Gemma, after her too. Gemma is about to have more on her hands than escaping General Cushing, though, as a young friend of hers is in danger, and her own twin sister is in town to muck things up as well.
I enjoyed this book through most of it. I really liked the way the storyline with Cushing played out, taking Super-Gemma from Albuquerque to the White House and back. By the end of this book, I could easily compare it to a comic book super hero origin story. If my review and rating were based just on the resolution regarding Dr. Bickel and Cushing, I would have given it 4 stars, maybe more. However, things got really weird on the theology side of the story, and I felt very strange about the whole thing by the end.
I thought it a little odd at the end of Stealth Power, when Gemma basically became a Christian, and then the nanomites felt the presence of Jesus inside her. But I let it go, accepted it as the fiction that it is, and moved on. But by the 2nd half or so of this book, the nanomites are receiving instructions from Jesus. Surrendering their will to Jesus. And...being forgiven by Jesus? It took a lot more suspension of disbelief than I prefer to swallow all of that. Add to that the fact that the associate pastor who was once my favorite character had become simply a vehicle for faith-professing in the book, and even as a Christian, I felt very Bible-thumped (I don't know if that works in this context, but I'm sure it's clear what I mean). And in the end, I have no idea what the real purpose of Gemma's twin, Genie, was in this book, other than to be another convert for Zander's cause.
The first book was mostly in 1st-person from Gemma's point of view, with a little 3rd-person if the author wanted to show things happening with other characters. This was explained in the fact that Gemma was keeping a journal of everything happened after she became invisible. However, the journal aspect was sort of abandoned in book 2, and by this point, it's more like half-1st person, half-3rd person. Which is strange and confusing. The writing style as a whole still put me off a bit, especially in the 1st-person parts. It's incredibly casual and conversational. In the end, I think the author's style isn't really for me, but the story about the nanomites, the invisibility, and Gemma escaping the bad guy is unique and interesting! I only wish there hadn't been so much else to bog it down.
The series continues on for one more book (at this time), which from the synopsis is clear is a divergent from the main story arc in the first three. I plan to read it soon, because I did come this far. At this point, I would still recommend the series to fans of Christian mysteries & thrillers and lovers of this type of sci-fi, especially since I think many others wouldn't be so bothered by the things that bothered me. Some other reviews do mention being put off by the nanomites' seeming religious experience, but also express that the story outside of that is good.
Ok. So before I buy the fourth book I must get some things done around the house. Not much else has been accomplished while reading this series thus far. I am drawn to the Nanocloud, to Gemma Keyes, to all she is doing and learning, and to all of the incredible secondary characters. I love how Gemma has come to know Jesus and continues to learn more and grow more with Him at the same time she remembers Him from her upbringing with Aunt Lucy. Her relationship with Zander has been precious and heart-rending to watch. I just can't seem to get enough. Such in depth descriptions, I feel like I am right there in the midst of the story, each scene, every emotion and feeling. I cannot wait to purchase the fourth book. I highly recommend this series and this wonderful author, Vikki Kestell!
This book was supposed to be the conclusion to the trilogy. The author decided to write another 3 books after it. Because it was originally meant to end with this book, readers could be satisfied with the ending if they wish not to continue. This time the story does not end on a cliffhanger. However, readers can continue reading more about the characters and their unique situation with advanced technology, to put it mildly. I do intend to continue reading the rest of the books but I think I will take a break in between for a little while. This one was the most “Christian” one so far and I found it a little preachy at times. I liked the book but I felt it was a bit longer than it needed to be and it was a bit repetitive from time to time. Still a well written book.
Dnf. I really don’t like how Gemma is written like she’s 14. Feels like a middle school or YA book in terms of how her character is. The first two books were interesting enough to finish, but the flaws in this one started bothering me too much. Because of the way he characters react in situations, the story feels silly at times and not realistic. I know the subject matter itself isn’t “realistic” (I mean, we’re talking about invisibility here) but if invisibility WERE real, I feel it would be handled differently by characters in real life, than it is portrayed in the book.
In the third book of the Nanostealth series, Gemma becomes a mighty warrior with the assistance of the nanomites, and intensive training. Alas, Gen. Cushing discovers her new identity and sends in the mercenaries after her. With the nanocloud's protection she rises to live another day, has an encounter with the president of the US, and cleans up a mexican drug cartel. Good solution, cant wait to read book 4.
Great Read. Didn't see the ending coming...it was full of intrigue and mystery! Vikki Kestell You never fail to keep me on my toes. I love your books.
So Gemma & Genie Keyes, Abe, Emilio, Zander, and Special Agent Gamble - make a great family. The action keeps you interested...will they all make it out of this situation with Cushing? it is so touch and go it is crazy! But I loved it.
I have read the first 3 books and will buy the 4th in the series. Life is too short to read boring books, and I am too cheap to buy books (Library and PRIME)...but I got the first book for free and liked it enough to FINISH it and then BUY the rest of the series! Two things I would never do if the books were boring!
The hunt for Gemma Keyes continues which nesscitates a new identity. Can’t say too much without giving away the storyline! Even though I am a Christian and enjoy the “preachy” parts in the book, sometimes it is too much. Looking forward to the next phase in Gemma and Zander’s lives.
WOW!! This series is amazing! It has been suspenseful and entertaining…a definite page-turner. I’ve read the first 3 books in about 10 days. Gemma, the main character, is a normal woman who rises to the occasion and becomes a fierce warrior. I like the Christian emphasis as well. On to book 4!!
I read all the books in this series (so far). I don't usually like science fiction, but I was hooked from the beginning. Plain ordinary Gamma became wonder woman! The impossible became possible with Jesus. Romance included with a surprise ending.
A refreshing new story direction. A unique blend of science and fiction and an interesting combination of wonderful characters. A great witness is combined in rhe plot. I hope you enjoy the read like I did
For me, this novel was superb. It was fast-paced, incredibly creative, and had a clear message of the Gospel. There is a 4th one in the series, but it doesn't get released until June.
I've have loved this series. So glad I have book 4 to read soon. Didn't know how the author was going to wrap it all up in the end. So glad I gave this series a try even thought I've never read a lot of science fiction type stories in the past. Worth it!
