1918: The Unexpected Victory

Rate this book
Focuses on the last year of World War I, particularly the factors that brought it to a conclusion midst the echoes of Allied officials predicting it would stretch well past the end of the decade. Looks at the many failed Allied offensives, how the warring parties approached the year, how the Allies dealt with fresh German offensives, the first signs of German demoralization, and the ultimate collapse of German positions along the Western Front. A good, introductory book on the subject of the last year of WW1. (That I read this one now is no coincidence!) Perhaps maps should be more stremlined to be helpful. Also there could have been a little more on British tactics during the final year of the war, instead of very vague, better coordination between variety of arms, etc. Nonetheless, it gives a solid narrative, with good use of quotes from contemporaries.

A very british oriented and unit-detailed telling of the final year of the war. Minimal setting of the individual battles in a broader context. Couldn't finish it.
