The carefree, fun-loving boy changed suddenly. Meditative and withdrawn, Vekataraman or Ramana Maharshi, as he was later named, left his loved ones and set out to find his true calling. The Maharshi's, simplicity, his quiet wisdom and his love for every living being - be it a tree, an animal or the lowliest of people - brought with it a peace and calm that suffused every devotee who came before him.
This is my first time reading about Ramana Maharshi. As always, ACK books are crisp and clear with so many highlights packed in a short package. Some thoughts that caught my attention from the book are:
One of the devotees Echammal came to Maharshi. The Maharshi did not speak, Echammal waited, then suddenly she felt: "What is this? My sorrows are melting away, I feel a deep peace just by sitting here. He does not speak, but his silence gives more solace than words"
When the Ashram was attacked by thieves and they made a thorough search but could not find a penny, the angry thieves beat the Maharshi and the Ashram inmates and went away. Then one of the Ashram people said: "Bhagavan, they have wounded you! Let me go after them with this iron bar." to which Maharshi said: "No, they are thieves, blinded by ignorance. But we are Sadhus and must not give up our Dharma"
