Sarah Lewis desires nothing more than to begin again after a failed marriage and a tragedy so terrifying, it forces her to leave her life in London to stay with her best friend a world apart in South Africa. Despite immediate success in her business, she struggles to understand who she really is and where she belongs in the world. So begins a journey of discovery as Sarah re-unites with Katy in the land where she was born, where the air is lavender scented, and weekends are spent cycling on the beach. Until the day when she has to return to London to face the ghosts of her past and confront a situation that has grown more complicated in her absence. Perfect Imperfections is an intriguing tale which hints at wrongdoings and deceit without giving too much away. The author cleverly weaves a tale around fragile yet strong Sarah as she tries to reconcile her past with her future, engaging the reader to the point where we simply want the best for her and for happiness finally to come her way.

As soon as I started reading Perfect Imperfections I was drawn into it. I wanted to know who Sarah was, what had happened and why she was running away. There is so much to love about that book. The vivid descriptions of African landscape, the mouthwatering foods mentioned. The biggest strength to me though are beautifully crafted characters, especially Sarah, and the relationships between them. The friendships, love, they shine through and allow Sarah to heal and find courage to live a meaningful and purposeful life again. Perfect Imperfections is a beautiful and captivating story of loss and heartbreak, of friendship and love, of hope and forgiveness, and of courage and strength to find happiness again. It's a really heartwarming story and I would definitely recommend it.
Perfect Imperfections is a heartwarming tale about letting go of the past, embracing the future and discovering one’s true self after suffering heartbreak and tragedy.
The writing is vivid and descriptive. The characters are strong, kind, and supportive. And the plot is an engaging, emotional tale with a side of mystery that’s full of heartache, loss, grief, betrayal, relationship dynamics, family, romance, and love.
Overall, I would have to say that Perfect Imperfections is a charming, sweet, beautiful debut for Leigh that does a wonderful job of highlighting just how important and powerful friendship can truly be.
Thank you to Taryn Leigh and Olympia Publishers for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.
_________________________________________________________________________________________ MY REVIEW OF "PERFECT IMPERFECTIONS" by TARYN LEIGH
I appreciate the way Taryn Leigh, author of "Perfect Imperfections" weaves the details of her story. The timeline of this story is mostly in the present with a few past references that pertain to the characters or the storyline. The genres of this story are Fiction or Women's Fiction.
The author describes her characters as complex and complicated. Some characters are mean-spirited. Other characters are capable of betrayal and deceitful acts. There are characters that are supportive and kind as well. Sarah Lewis leaves her home in London, after a major tragedy and betrayal, and goes to restart her life in South Africa. She stays at her best friend's home while she struggles emotionally to put her life together, as well as her business obligations.
Taryn Leigh does a fantastic job in keeping the reader in suspense about what the tragedy and betrayals are. We know that Sarah is keeping secrets from her best friend and brother, who only want to help her. Sarah is emotionally fragile and is having nightmares. She starts to put her business together, and then is called back to London for a family emergency. Sarah finally realizes that she has to go back to the past in order to move on to the present and future.
I really like the way that the author shows us that through adversity there is hope. The author describes having a support system, family, friends and love. The author also shows us good vs. evil, loyalty vs. betrayal, forgiveness and redemption vs. holding grudges and retribution. Taryn Leigh shows us the growth in the characters.
I would recommend this intriguing and emotionally captivating story for readers who enjoy fiction. I look forward to seeing more of these characters, and I do hope that the author writes more about them. I received a copy of this book for my honest review.
Wonderful story of lost, betrayed and love. I really loved this book and couldn't help myself to care for Sarah, I wanted to hug her tight and tell her that everything will be all right. I have never been in South Africa but while read the novel, it was like that I was there, smelling the wonderful scent of lavender, and imagine the African sky.
Sarah, left London all of a sudden, to go back to her native country, South Africa. She is broken psychologically and spiritually. Sarah sees no future for her, and vow that she won't let any man come close to her again. Thanks to her friends, Kathy and Edward, she starts her long journey to recover and starts to live again. But is it even possible to start living again after all she had endure? Would she be ready to let go of the past and finally forgive those who hurt and betrayed her so cruelly ?
When the Story begins Sarah Lewis is running from her past, well flying actually, leaving behind her life and family in the UK and heading out to the country she was born, South Africa and where she still had the best kind of friend. One that didn’t ask questions. It is obvious from the start of this book that something soul destroying has happened to Sarah, so much so that she just can’t think about it never mind talk it out. Katy and her brother welcome her with open arms and try to make life as normal as possible to help mend their friend emotionally. Sarah throws herself into building up a new business but no matter how many miles she has put between her and her past every thought and detail about what happened has travelled with her. As the reader you have no idea about the tragedy she hides but you feel helpless and just want to make it better for her. I soon got the feeling that if Sarah gave you her love and friendship it would be a life thing, she would always be there for you. When a call London comes she knows there is no alternative but to face her past because she has to return home. This story is about betrayal and loss, friendship and hope but mainly the strength to rebuild and start again. It is a heart breaking story at times and I really felt for Sarah’s mum and dad and the impossible situation they had been flung into. There are also some pretty cool bits in the book too that did make me smile. It’s the little things in life that someone picks up on and realises that they are special and mean the world to you, they don’t have to be expensive. That is the magic in really knowing someone. This is such a well balanced novel, with characters that are from both ends of the spectrum of selfish and selfless. A lovely book to read. Highly recommended.
All my reviews can be found at: http://jessicasreadingroom.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Perfect Imperfections is Taryn Leigh’s debut novel and it is a mix of mystery and adventure with some romance.
Sarah Lewis has experienced something that many people never go through and she is a broken woman at the beginning of the novel. Taryn Leigh pulls you in from the start as we go on this journey with Sarah. You grow to care for Sarah as the novel progresses and once we learn what she experienced your heart can only do one thing: break for her pain and loss.
Perfect Imperfections is a beautifully written yet heartbreaking novel. It also deals with long term friendship, love, and hope. As the novel progresses we see how Sarah grows from being a very broken woman to who she becomes at the end.
Perfect Imperfections is one you don’t want to put down and the further you get into it, the more you don’t want to stop. I wanted more story with the last few chapters as I felt the story can continue and I hope Taryn beings us back into Sarah’s life. I would love to see the next chapter in her life!
I found myself wondering about the cover and the title when I started the book. As you read the novel you understand the meaning behind everything and I love it!!
This is one that everyone should read. Perfect Imperfections is recommended.
Many thanks to Taryn Leigh and her publisher Olympia Publishers for the copy I was sent. It was a pleasure to read. I just wish it had not taken me so long to read it, but the wait was worth it!
Taryn’s well-written description transports the reader to South Africa with all its unique characteristics, sounds and sights. I loved following Sarah’s emotional journey and wondering what had provoked her move. Great friendships were clear from the outset with Edward, Kate, John & Kevin, and letting Sarah share her story at her own pace, despite the readers strong curiosity burning. This story deals with heart break, friendship, loss, family and love and all the many facets that entails. I’ve been eagerly listening to this delightful book on audio, although I would rather have read it myself as the narrator had a certain style which I found did not sit easily with me.
Wow! I was kindly sent this book for review purposes. When I first read about this book I was a little skeptical, this really isn't the style of book I would reach for! But my god am I glad I did!
This book illustrates a beautiful picture of a beautiful friendship and relationship from the very beginning. If I had to say something to a person that isn’t a fan of romance novels, I would explain that this isn’t just a romance novel it contains a whole array of emotions from love to heartache, including the hints of mystery thrown in.
Taryn describes South Africa so beautifully and creates the most vivid picture in your mind of the locations mentioned I had to google them, just to see what they actually looked like. One of my favourite locations would be, Indigo Fields, the description of the spa and the scenic views were so vivid and detailed when I researched the spa for myself it was exactly as I imagined.
I wrote a full review on my blog (emilyloureads) for 'Perfect Imperfections' and in my review I had to give praise to Taryn and her writing, again not the genre of book I reach for normally but Taryn's style of writing just drew me in. I would definitely love to work with Taryn in the future if she were to ever release anymore of her work, wether it be sent for review or if I purchase it myself.
P.s I have now handed this book over to my mother to read and am currently waiting on her feedback!lol
*Although I was kindly sent this book for review, all views and opinions are completely my own*

My Review
Sarah Lewis has been through the mill, her marriage has broken down and she is upping sticks leaving her life in London to return home to South Africa to heal. Returning to her roots and best friend Katy, Sarah slowly starts to let the walls come down and let those she loves in. Piece by piece Sarah starts to heal and prepare herself for facing the past she has run away from.
This is a genteel wee book, from the beginning we know Sarah is running from something in her life, from her failed marriage and hints at more. Instead of being a deadly secret or anything dark like that it is more echos of the issues surrounding every day relationships and ordinary lives which will connect with many readers. Failed relationships, rekindling friendships of old, healing after the breakdown of a marriage, betrayal and just trying to rebuild yourself.
It is a journey of self discovery and growth, appreciating things in your life that may have been over looked because you have been caught up with other aspects of your life. Self healing, support, friendship, love and learning to embrace the lessons from life and positively move on. It really is a beautiful story, slow burning and a prime example of how the darkest times in your life can lead to brighter new beginnings. Sometimes you read a book and something just clicks, for me I found the most perfectly apt quote: "Darkness cannot drive away darkness, only light can do that".
If you enjoy book locations, when we travel to South Africa the settings and descriptions of some of the area are breath taking. It is not somewhere I have ever been nor likely to get to however from the scenery is brought to life from the pages you can envision the beauty as if you were there with the characters. Locations aren't always a huge factor or notable part of books I am reading but it was so vivid at times in this one it is absolutely worthy of note. Perfect Imperfections is the perfect book to immerse yourself in by a poolside or curled up indoors, 4/5 for me. This is my first time reading this author , I would read her again. Thanks so much to Deryl in the NotRights club and the author for providing me with a review copy, all views as always are my own.
My 5* review of Perfect Imperfections by Taryn Leigh that I read and reviewed via kindle download.
"Sarah Lewis desires nothing more than to begin again after a failed marriage and a tragedy so terrifying, it forces her to leave her life in London to stay with her best friend a world apart in South Africa. Until the day when she has to return to London to face the ghosts of her past and confront a situation that has grown more complicated in her absence."
Tary Leigh does a fantastic job of painting the landscape, sights, flowers and food, sounds and smells of South Africa in this book, that it is so easy to imagine you are there in the endless countryside and small towns that make up this vast country. This is so much more than your average boy meets girl and falls in love story and it had so many layers to it that Sarah's dramatic exit from London to South Africa following a tragedy that no-one dares mention was bubbling under the surface for about three quarters of the book teasing the reader.
When she finally feels able to talk about Adam and what tragically happened to Christopher, the significance of the giraffe, and why she felt she had to pack up and run to her homeland, it was done with such emotion, that I really felt I was going through it with her, especially as I had got to know her slowly throughout the book by now.
There are some lovely insightful passages into human emotions surrounding love and loss running through the book and I especially loved this one from Sarah when she makes it back to her happy place of South Africa and enjoys again the never-ending night sky "If we had no moon, we would have no hope of the sun shining tomorrow. The moon reminds us that the sun is just around the corner" Something in South Africa was licking Sarah's wounds clean, giving them time to heal.
I wondered for a long time about the title of the book and I am guessing it refers to Katy's eclectic collection of crockery which she uses and tells Sarah "Sometimes differences are what make things symmetrical" referring to mismatched teacups and saucers and plates, and in fact, relationships too.
Edward and his beautiful thoughtful gifts encased in his signature white embossed wrapping paper, together with a bow and a sprig of lavender was a lovely romantic theme running through the book and definitely made me think that everyone deserves an Edward in their life!
A really lovely, easy read about betrayal, trust and moving on. Taryn is extremely descriptive in her writing to the point that you feel like you are in the room with them or smelling the lavender or home baked goods.
Beautiful characters were introduced to us, her best friend Katy, childhood friend and Katy’s brother Edward, her assistant Kevin just to name a few. Sarah was running from her past but you feel complete after finding out why and seeing her move into her future.
A stunning debut. I really enjoyed this hygge-style novel of love, loss and female empowerment. What made it so very different to anything I have read before, was the wonderful way Taryn Leigh weaves so many subjects into her writing; travel and food and drink taking centre stage, as well as the subjects of friendship and nurturing the soul. This made for quite the multi-faceted story with believable characters who jumped off the page. The perfect book to curl up with armed with a proper hot chocolate (we find out how to make that in the story) and devour in a weekend...
As a romance/chick lit novel I think this would be a perfect holiday read and you could really lose yourself in the descriptions of South Africa. The mystery/suspense element of the story I didn't feel worked quite so well and the reveal felt a bit rushed. This is definitely a sweet story with characters who just love surprises but sadly a bit too sweet for my palate.
I received a copy of Perfect Imperfections via THE Book Club on Facebook and my thanks to the author Taryn Leigh for that.
Wow, I absolutely adored this book and I fell in love with Sarah, Katy, Edward, John and Kevin. I hope this is not the last time we visit these characters as I would love to read more from them.
It was such a nice change to read a book set in South Africa, it's on my bucket list and the way Taryn Leigh described Durban has made me want to go now! The attention to detail from Taryn regarding the descriptions is impeccable. I really felt like I had been to Durban with how well it was described. After I finished the book, I jumped on Google and started looking at pictures and it looked exactly how I expected it.
I felt a whole range of emotions throughout the book, I'd half guessed what the tragedy was that had made Sarah leave London but I was still shocked when it was revealed what had happened. It made a refreshing change to not have guessed everything straight away.
I hope that Perfect Imperfections will get a sequel as I loved all the characters and I would happily read more about them. I will recommend this book to everyone I know as this book is fabulous and Taryn Leigh deserves every success!
Wished this book didn't have to end. Loved every minute of it. I went on an adventure as Sarah fought to survive and rebuild her life after facing a tragedy. The book left trails like breadcrumbs to reveal the story behind the story. Creating a sense of mystery. Through it all I laughed and cried with Sarah and jumped with joy as her life went from one adventure to the next. I would recommend this story to anyone wanting a story that has emotional depth, romance, adventure and even mystery.
Such an awesome feel good story, with enough mystery to keep you turning the pages, enough heartache to make it relatable, and enough laughs to pick you up. The Author shares in so much detail each scene that you feel as if you are a part of it. Great read! It had me even debating with the Characters in my head as if they were real!
This was a fast read! I don’t read many books outside of my regular fantasy books, but I wanted to read this because the author is a sweet person and I wanted to try something else, this book called me.
I was expecting a cheesy, predictable and boring romance. Well, I was wrong, and I love to be wrong for these kind of things. Anything that can surprise me, is a good thing.
This book is full of suspense and it really get thru the feeling of looking forward and leave the past behind. I never suspected what happened in London. But thru all the book you are reminded to Keep the best of the worst situation and make the best for yourself. Sarah and Katy are two adorable characters and you get attached really fast to them. Sarah is a lot like me, like I could’ve seen myself.. except I’m not successful in my career and as pretty lol
Even the other characters like Edward, Kevin, John,Jamie or even Annie will make you smile. And the group of characters make a really sweet gang I. The end. You can predict the end a little bit,it’s a little bit cheesy, but then with all the things Sarah went thru in the book, you can’t expect nothing else for her. It’s perfect in it imperfections. It’s wrapping everything perfectly with a red bow and sweet lavender on top of it! ;)
I do recommend this book, it made me go out of my confort zone for a few hours and I enjoyed the ride. I loved the story was in South Africa and I was able To discover a piece of its beauty and history. This only made the book for my Canadian self. It was wonderful to travel there for a few hours even if it was only into this book.
I would’ve love the book to be a bit longer though so we could have a longer peak at what happened in the end... maybe a sequel? :) I wanted more..
I was hesitant when writing my review for this book – particularly as there are so many five star reviews and I just couldn’t find myself agreeing unfortunately.
Whilst I agree that there was a beautiful backdrop of South Africa painted throughout this book, the underlying text and wording was difficult to read. Sentence structures were jarring and didn’t flow very well and it felt like it had missed a final edit.
The characters are endearing and likeable though and the little snippets into the main characters history together was lovely. Traditions and values often shone through which made the reading a little easier. It was really lovely to read about traditional South African dishes being made – and the baking scenes were well described. It’s only really at around 68% in the book that the underlying mystery is revealed. It was built up well though and I did find myself wanting to find out what the trauma was and what had led Sarah as the main character back to South Africa.
The ending was really disappointing. I felt that it was rushed and more time could have been given to drawing out the final events of the book to make them more believable.
This was a light and easy read. Hints of romance and an underlying mystery meant that this book was able to span across genres but ultimately is a warming romance at heart.
I really enjoyed this book and thought the story was fab. We start by not really knowing much about why Sarah has fled her life in the U.K. and gone back to her home country in South Africa. Slowly through the book she starts to open up and we find out why she's so broken and upset. I read this book in one day, i wanted to find out what was going to happen and the story really held my attention and was very enjoyable. My only issue is that some of writing seemed formal and wasn't how I expected the characters to talk. They used the sentences such as "I will get" instead of "I'll get" and "We/I have" instead of We've/I've". Maybe this is just me but I think it seemed a bit formal for conversations between people who'd known each other for years, or maybe that's how South Africans talk I don't know. Anyway only a slight niggle which didn't spoil the story at all. One last thing in the beginning we meet Edwards girlfriend called Jasmine, in the middle of the story she's mentioned again but called Jessica and then at the end back to Jasmine. I realise this is an ARC copy so that might not be the same in everyone's. Thanks to TBC on Facebook for the advance copy in return for an honest review.
This book is a rare find. I typically read different genres but I was recommended this book by a friend and I never looked back. I read it in less than 6 hours because it was impossible to put it down, walk away from this story and get on with my life before I knew how it ends. I'm giving it 5* without a hesitation and adding it to the list of my all time favourite books.
The perfect imperfections is written in such a beautiful style and you fall in love with characters from the start.
It's written really clever way and only revealing a bit by bit. Sarah, who has decided to move back to South Africa to heal her broken heart and put distance between her and her dark past, keeps her pain locked inside and doesn't share what happened with anyone, not even her best friend, until the end. It makes this book a real page turner.
It's also a story of real friendship that holds you above the surface when you feel like drowning. It's so beautiful, I felt a tiny sting of envy for this amazing relationship.
The story of the true love, that overcomes everything, even decades of separation.
The story of fresh starts, even if you feel like you have no reason to keep going.
Author is very descriptive and makes you feel like you suddenly happen to be in South Africa. I've never been there but she has painted a 'perfectly imperfect picture' of the place, I could literally feel the heat of the country and see the real colours. I have a great imagination but I hardly experience such a strong feeling of being at the place of the story. It immediately made me feel like booking a flight to South Africa.
If you want to read a 'feel good book', dealing with grief, need a positive vibes in your life or just love happy endings, this book is for you. And if you are just like me and usually stick to the same genre, give this book a try and I promise you, you won't be be disappointed.
As I began to read this story, it took me away from reality and into Sarah's world. I could smell the Lavender and I could feel the emotions within every word. My heart ached and my heart smiled for her. This is an unbelievable story. It had joy, sadness, pain and anguish. This book should be on everyone's list this Fall. Cozy up by the fire and enjoy!
Audiobook review A complete change of genre for me. So glad I listened though. It’s a feel good, warm inside type of tale. The beautiful descriptions of the scenery. The great characters, they are so real & learning more about them as the story unfolded made them solid people. The changes in life were written about and how people overcome challenges. A hopeful lovely story
"But I've realised that sometimes things can be a little different, almost vastly different, yet make perfect sense when they are brought together. Sometimes differences are what make things symmetrical."
"Today I choose to forgive you, not because of who you are, but because of who I want to become."
This is written from a different POV then I usually enjoy. It made it hard for me to connect with a specific character as much as I would have liked to. But, it was nice to have insight into other characters' thoughts and feelings.
Perfect Imperfections is a really sweet story of strength, forgiveness, love, heartbreak, and overcoming life's challenges. I'm anxious to see more by this author.
If I'm honest, to begin with, I thought this book was going to be rather 'cheesy'. I imagined it was going to be predictable. It was refreshingly far from it and it was nice to be proved wrong! I connected very quickly with the main character Sarah as she felt very believable and I loved her inner strength. I also genuinely felt her pain. She was such a nice person that I wanted to see her at peace and happy. I particularly liked this authors style of writing and attention to detail. It really drew me in and its like nothing I have read before, unique and beautiful. I enjoyed the South African setting to and made me want to visit! A highly recommended read from me and one that will be staying with me.
Perfect Imperfections - The title alone is so catching. Being a South African myself, I was excited to get to read a book by another citizen. Being able to relate to references made in the book was so cool.
The story - dealing with overcoming past hurts and trying to move on is something we can all relate with. I was anxiously waiting for Sarah's past to be revealed. The anticipation built with every chapter.
It was amazing to once again witness the healing power of forgiveness!
There is one word that sums up this book and that's the first word of the title "Perfect". I absolutely loved it. I particularly liked the way it keeps you guessing what it is that Sarah is running away from and the very strong friendship she has with her childhood friend Katy is very warming. It's set in South Africa and partly in London and the parts in South Africa seem so lovely and exotic it makes you want to visit. I read this book in three days and I just didn't want it to finish. This book would be great to read on holiday, you can almost sense the sunshine radiating from the pages.
After divorce, interior designer (Sarah) starts new life in South Africa near childhood best friend (Katy). Why did Sarah run away from London? What happened in her past? Will she be able to move on?
I enjoyed the writing style and the South African setting. If you're looking for a light beach read, then I would recommend this sweet story.
