Sleep is something we cannot deny because it truly rules our life; our creativity, energy, mood, and even our immune system. What are some of the more common sleep disorders, how it affects shift workers, the way in which we are much like seabirds and more are provided in an overall view of why we MUST sleep.
Do you know that while you sleep your brain actually shrinks in size and what does that mean? The brain is still revealing its secrets and one of it is the magic of sleep and a newly discovered system within the brain connected to sleep.
How much sleep do you need and what can happen if you don't actually sleep the recommended number of hours. What about the latest research on sleep, what is it telling us?
A book that will help clear up what is meant by "sleep hygiene" and how it provides your guide to better sleep. Are you a "lark" or an "owl" and what does that mean to your daytime functioning? Take the Life Stress Scale and do a quick check on your overall functioning and happiness. Go online and find out about that lark and owl designation with a special test just for that purpose.
A book for the consumer who wants to understand sleep and all its wonders.
SLEEP: Everyone needs it and so do you - I was disappointed by the lack of editing and proper formatting. There were multiple incomplete sentences and the change from one bulleted item to the next wasn't clear many times and I'm only on page 50. The purpose of the book was stated on page 37 instead of the beginning of the book, which had garbage about famous people that didn't believe in sleep - this section should be deleted or moved back. Even towards the end of the book, the lengthy discussions of famous authors and how their dreams created books, I felt talked down to about creativity and how to achieve it. Their sections were longer than many of the components of the topic of the book, sleep.
There is nothing new really for anyone well read and current on sleep and some sleep disorders or who have experienced problems for themselves or someone they know. This is a skimming of topics anyway. Those who want to learn or need more information are better off going with another book. Ask your doctor or librarian for help. There is a lot of filler and other unnecessary personal (example: "I'll bet") type of comments that do not belong in this book. Again, back to the lack of editing and thought and planning of order and presentation.
While not expecting a "textbook", I was expecting a professionally written book by a professional. I took a journalism course once where we had to buy the instructor's book. The professor and his co-writer, another professor, each had over with over 40 years journalism experience in the field before teaching. At the end of the semester, I gave them my textbook, which I had edited. Ms. Farrell's book is in worse shape than my professors.
The thought and effort put into the book are missing. I experienced rudeness in her handling of certain items, which actually had no place in the book even without the rudeness. There are better books to get information about sleep, disorders and why we need it. The title is a turn off, too: "Everyone needs it and so do you". 2*
I received an author signed copy of Sleep:Everyone Needs It and So Do You as a gift, when I entered a contest on Goodreads. This book was very well written, very informative and worth reading. I personally have a difficult time falling and staying asleep which affects my energy level. I found the information very helpful and have shared it with my friends and family. I took the Life Stress Scale and found out that I am an owl. Thank you Ms. Patricia Farrell.
I found this book to be written at a very approachable level; it's not a textbook, but rather an 'aid to the troubled'. There's enough reference material for the investigator to pursue, but it's basically a set of helpful tips described and justified.
