Love Her Wild

Rate this book
For fans of Milk & Honey and Chasers of the Light, the first collection of poetry by Instagram sensation Atticus.

Love Her Wild is a collection of new and beloved poems from Atticus, the young writer who has captured the hearts and minds of hundreds of thousands of avid followers on his Instagram account @atticuspoetry

In Love Her Wild, Atticus captures what is both raw and relatable about the smallest and the grandest moments in life: the first glimpse of a new love in Paris; skinny dipping on a summer's night; the irrepressible exuberance of the female spirit; or drinking whiskey in the desert watching the rising sun.

With honesty, poignancy, and romantic flair, Atticus distils the most exhilarating highs and the heart-breaking lows of life and love into a few perfectly evocative lines, ensuring that his words will become etched in your mind and will awaken your sense of adventure.

What the hell did I just read, and who picked this rotten piece of tripe up and put it on the best seller wall? How in the hell did this dude get a book contract? I mean, other than the slow downward spiral of modern book publishing always looking for a viral hit...

Love Her Wild, is "Instagram poetry" which means it is short and insipid (the short part being the only good thing about this book). Admittedly, Instagram poetry doesn't have to be bad. I should be less caustic about the idea as a whole, but Atticus' verbiage is just a bunch of crappy Facebook memes wrapped up in an a beautiful package. That just makes the book's existence more offensive as better books deserve the production treatment that this one got. There is nothing new in this volume. It's all about love and life and being free, things people have written about since time immemorial with much more beautiful language and much deeper insights. This is poetry that makes you feel good because it says nothing. It's pablum. It's the Doritos of the poetry world. It's the stuff your relatives used to send in email forwards with midi files attached. It's barely fucking poetry. Buy a Hallmark card and you can get the same placid, meaningless nonsense. Poetry has developed a bad reputation for being indecipherable, but Love Her Wild swings in the opposite direction. Some of the shorter pieces have probably starred on fortune cookie papers.

If you are interested in poetry, go into your local bookstore, close your eyes, pick literally ANYTHING off the shelf, and you'll be rewarded with something better. Find poetry that ignites something deeper than a sense of YOLO.

2 what-in-the-Hoobastank-did-I-just-read stars.

I understand the commotion surrounding Atticus, I really do. He's young, drives the ladies/fellas crazy, wears a mask (oh, so mysterious), and to top it all off, he was praised by a Victoria Secret model. I'd say he has collectively created a unique brand for himself. That being said, to give this anything more than 2.5 stars would be misleading because the above-mentioned has nothing to do with the actual quality of his poems.

The vocabulary used throughout this collection is simple. Nothing wrong with that. But if you're going to go the simple route and use short stanzas, then you better make sure those two-liners are somewhat impressionable. Unfortunately, these poems did nothing to stimulate my brain, in fact, majority of them made me gag.

However, I will admit that the cover and corresponding imagery in this book is very aesthetically pleasing. But WHY are these poems so overhyped? I once wrote a poem about sausages and potatoes at the tender age of 13 that was more emotionally provoking than some of these poems. (sorry if that made you salivate)

All in all, I understand that poetry is subjective, so take my review as a grain of salt if you will; but I am quite surprised by the amount of 5-star reviews on here because none of these poems are revolutionary by any means.

Here is an example of a poem that I liked:

“I hope to arrive to my death, late, in love, and a little drunk.”

Not bad, right? Sadly, I only liked two other poems.

Here is an example of a poem that made me gag:

"She was just another broken doll dreaming of a boy with glue.”

*barfs* Grab a bucket because this book is gunna make you cringe like you've never cringed before.

If you enjoy Atticus' style of poetry, that's great, but I think I will stick with my Edgar Allan Poe, William Ernest Henley etc.

P.S. If you agree with my review, then please, say a silent prayer to the Poet Lord asking him to prevent possible collaborations between Atticus and Rupi Kaur. JESUS, that would send me over the edge!

‘she found herself over a long and treacherous road and the more treacherous the road became, the more of herself she found.’

as far as ‘instagram poetry’ goes, im actually impressed. i found this collection to be teeming with words that describe love and life in such an understated way, in simple elegance and subtle purity.

i understand how this kind of poetry isnt for everyone, but i thought it was lovely.

as instagram captions? sure. as poems? um.

i don't have the energy to think of something funny to say about this book but to the reviewer who compared this to hoobastank, hats off to you.

i am not the target audience for this book, i read it for a video. but i think of all the IG style poetry i've read this might be the worst. no real attempts at metaphor or imagery. just random observations or vaguely misogynistic ponderings. not for me.

"The hardest step
We must all take
Is to blindly trust
In who we are."

A trip to the beach. Feeling a bit low despite the blinding sunshine. While packing my tote (towels, sunscreen, water), I spotted my copy of Love Her Wild. Perfect. I always knew I'd re-read it, and today's the day.

After a dip in the water, I settled in and read this (again) from cover to cover.

I still love it. I've found new favourites. My perspective has changed. A lot has happened since my last read. But the words remain just as thoughtful and inspiring.

It was so nice to get lost between the covers again.

Yes. This was the right book at the right time. Poems are a beautiful balm to soothe the soul.

"We leave behind our unicorns -
the ones that get away -
But they're never fully gone,
They will always be there,
Roaming
In the grassy fields of our Soul."

Original review, Jan.2018

”Chase your stars fool, life is short.”

Sublime. What a stunning collection of poems. This book made feel like I was sitting on a beach, soft sand underfoot and a delightful sea breeze caressing my face. It’s such a sensual work. Combined with the photography, this is visually beautiful.

Yes, the poems are short. But isn’t that the beauty of something like this, that a message can be conveyed so eloquently and yet so simply.

This is definitely a collection that I’ll read again, and will flick to random pages often.

Highly recommended. Do something different. Read a book of poetry and bring some poetry into your life.

this book isn’t horrible. it was quick and fun, light and easy. but every poem was just sooo short and seemed overly simplified. there were a handful of clever ones, but the majority of these just read like sentences in a greeting card or really dated, cheesy sayings. i really only enjoyed the last section that was about going out and living your best life, because the previous sections about romance were just so cliché and corny.

however, the pictures in this were GORGEOUS and went really well alongside the poem. i added a star just for them.

I was surprised that I didn't enjoy this book. I am an avid poetry fan, both of more classical poetry and of modern poets who tweak the genre. The reviews on this book were so overwhelmingly positive, I felt confident purchasing it. Perhaps I should have done more research and found the author's Instagram before purchasing, and you would do well to do so, it is very illustrative of the type of writing you will find in this compilation.

Personally, I will say that I don't think the author's ideas are new and I don't think he is exploring them with language that is particularly revolutionary. To me, a poet must do one of these two, and preferably the latter. Poetry is about language. You can't just add line breaks to any thought that pops out of your head and call it a poem. I didn't feel that anything about his language was purposeful or complex, and therefore his poetry fell quite flat. Here are a couple examples of the words in this book. These were some of the first I flipped randomly to-- I didn't scour to find the worst of the worst, rather these are representative of the writing you will find in the whole:

"I LIVE/MY LIFE/SO/HAPPILY/IN/CRAZY/WITH/HER."
"I feel/like girls/who drink/whiskey/tell/good/stories."

Etc. Ad nauseum.

Further, even the quotes contained within the positive reviews make me cringe. I agree with another reviewer, that while sometimes poetry is criticized for being too obscure, this book swings entirely to the other end of the pendulum. However, if there is something that speaks to you about these pithy aphorisms, by all means purchase and enjoy this book. Or, instead, buy any anthology of short poems which contains a multiple authors. I promise, they will contain many more complex ideas and wonderfully complicated language than this book.

I normally do not leave harsh reviews, however the reviews on this book being so overwhelmingly positive was part of the reason I purchased this book, and I wanted to provide a different perspective. I am concerned that part of the reason the reviews are as overwhelmingly positive as they are is because the author or his fans retaliate against negative reviews.

Mindestens.

With all of the creepers and perverts being featured on the news these days, it was breathtaking and awe-inspiring to find this new collection of poetry by a man named Atticus, published just this year.

I don't know who or what Atticus is, or if his mother was Hera, Athena or Aphrodite or what, but, clearly she was a goddess who did an incredible job of raising a righteous and creative young man.

Atticus's poetry is a celebration of the feminine EVERYTHING, a nod to the captivating allure of women and the PRIVILEGE it can be to find yourself in the presence of such beauty.

And, it was wonderful for me, a woman, to be reminded that the world is also full of beautiful men who love and cherish women for the playful, complicated and stunning creatures they are. Men who would never harm a woman or take anything from her by force. Men who help women put on their coats, brush the errant hairs from their eyes, and are attentive to their protection and well-being, even in their sleep.

This is gorgeous, lush, quotable poetry, and, in case my review hasn't communicated it yet. . . incredibly and ridiculously romantic, too.

Wow. What a collection.

She was the most beautiful
complicated
thing
I'd ever seen--
a tangled mess
of silky string--
and all I wanted of life
was to sit
down
cross-legged
and untie
her
knots.

"She was afraid of heights, but she was much more afraid of never flying."

I fucking loved this. I've been in the mood to read some poetry lately and I've heard nothing but good things about this poetry collection, so I decided to give it a go, and I am so impressed and stunned by how much I loved this. Sure, some of these poems are forgettable and pretentious and not that great, but there are so many amazing and gorgeous poems. I love that this collection is divided into three sections: Love, Her, and Wild. The first section has poems all centered around love, the second section is all poems about a girl and all include the word 'her' or 'she', and then the last section 'wild' includes poems about life and youth and everything else. This collection features some truly stunning black and white photography that fits the mood of the poems so well.

"Love could be labeled poison and we'd drink it anyways."

I listened to Taylor Swift's new album reputation while I read this and it really made it the perfect experience for me and probably contributed to how much I loved this book, not gonna lie. I know a lot of people probably don't like these poems because some of them are so simple and basic, but I really enjoyed almost all of them. In the goodreads description this book is said to have the most "tattoo-able" quotes which is something I definitely agree with. I definitely feel the urge to tattoo half of these poems. There are so many gorgeous quotes about love and life and youth, you really just have to read it for yourself to know, but here are some of my favorites:

"Depression is being color blind and constantly being told how colorful the world is."

"We let our lives mix with our dreams like two colored paints until we don't know which was what and we didn't care."

"Love is diving headfirst into someone else's confusion and finding that it all makes sense."

"She was cool - the whole world seemed to spin around her in smooth jazz."

"A sky full of stars and he was staring at her."

"I woke up from the daydream of my twenties in a cold sweat, anxious for all the lives I hadn't lived."

If any of these quotes sound beautiful or interesting to you then I strongly suggest picking up this book, I was really inspired and blown away by how much I enjoyed this. Definitely my favorite collection of poetry I've read so far; these poems really made me feel.

The poems in this collection are generic and unoriginal. It definitely lacks the substance. I enjoy reading modern poetry as long as it gives me the feels. Unfortunately, this one was a let down except for the photographs which I find stunning.

Everyone needs to read this now. But get it from a library - don't you dare put money in this mononymous writer's pocket. This is the laziest, basest, most emotionally-stunted garbage I have ever read, and I sort of love it. But what a disservice it does to real poets to qualify this as poetry. Example: "New love is the best cure / for old love gone bad." That's not a poem. That's a trite offering you proffer to that girl in your math class who you accidentally catch crying alone in the corner of the library and starts spilling her soul to you when you ask if she's okay but you can't muster up the energy to actually care about her bad break up so you say "New love is the best cure for old love gone bad." This is a book of artless platitudes and dank feels masquerading as low-rent poetry. On the flip side, this is the quintessential American story - if this fortune cookie poet can get a book published and Trump can be president, there is literally nothing you can't do if you're unqualified enough.

*whispers* so bad that milk and honey read like a masterpiece.

heteronormative through and through also some of the 'poems' were offensive.
like the one saying brushing a girl's hair behind her ear is better than any drugs. hmmm say what.

then when he said depression is like being color blinded and everyone keeps telling how colorful is the world around you. are you sure boy

to sum it up this is like john green for poetry and if you swing that way then yes this one is absolutely for you.

Well, combining some cheesy phrases with some form of art (photography, in this case) seems to be the latest trend in poetry. Love Her Wild, is a compilation of short poems, divided into three parts -
Love.
Her.
Wild
.

“Love is diving headfirst into someone else’s confusion and finding that it all makes sense.”

And to think this crappy piece was nominated for Goodreads Choice Awards pretty much extinguishes my faith in the so-called people’s choice award for books. Or is it that no one actually writes quality poems anymore? Not that I’m a poetry expert, but still, I believe I have the literal sense to distinguish good from the bad ones.

Following the trend of Rupi Kaur’s infamous poetry style, this book has poems that barely lasts 4 lines, or comprise short paragraphs at times, with no repeated pattern whatsoever. The topic is pretty much the same old Love.

“Love could be labeled poison and we’d drink it anyways.”

~This girl who is the most beautiful one.

~This girl who has no idea she’s the best thing ever.

“The world is made up of too many girls
wondering if they are pretty
and too many boys
too shy to tell them”

~This girl who breaks hearts.

~This girl who has no idea she breaks hearts.

“It’s not the fear of losing them that scares us,
It’s that we have given them many of our pieces
That we fear fear losing ourselves when they are gone."

~This girl who dreams unattainable things.

~This girl who is the centre of the universe.

"She was too busy
wishing on the shooting stars
to see the dreams come true around her"

Blah. Blah. Blah.

I’m not sure if the pieces were original at all. All of the lines felt too familiar to be original. And the accompanying pictures didn’t seem to play any significant role. What the author meant to convey through this book is still alien to me.

Despite everything, it was quick, short read. Yeah it wasn’t mind blowing, and I didn’t expect it to be. Yeah there were some lines I found to be good. But no, if you are a poetry lover, you may want to avoid reading this book. If you are a newbie, well then, no one’s stopping you.

Even the bravest wolf hunts with his head down.

Reading this was a pleasure! (RTC)

Pre-read review:

I'm not really a poetry reader, but I love some of what I've read "here and there" on the internet. Some of those were by Atticus

And what I've read mostly was beautiful, which is why I want to read it. But I've read reviews where people are saying it doesn't rhyme or something like "it is for no reason split into different lines, just to be called a poet." Well,

First, I'm here to see that for myself as well.
And second, poetry is not like poems. Poems rhyme, poetry doesn't always have to. In my understanding, poetry is just something deep or with a deeper message in as less words as possible.

Ps: Yes. Yes, I'm a hopeless romantic. ❤️

Here's some more of what inspired me to read, if you'd like to see. Just in case you want to judge/see what I liked enough to start a poetry book.

I follow Atticus Poetry in Instagram, because it's nice to come across a positive, loving thought in a nice font. Taken as a large group like this is, and listening to them, is just not the way they are meant to be consumed. In this format they don't feel like poems, but idealistic thoughts. I would classify them as greeting card poetry. And delivered in a bit of a Jack Handy voice, it lacks the sweetness of the graphical representation.

Here's an example of a longer one:

"Love is throwing yourself into a stormy sea, hoping there are arms to catch you, knowing that without the leap there is only the safe and lonely shore."

There are a lot of poems about "watching her sleep" and "not being afraid" of love but because the sentiments are so short there is not a lot of space for depth - or more accurately the depth opportunity is not taken advantage of.

It might be that I'm just too damn old. But I've liked the book versions of other social media poets, so I'm not sure that's it exactly. Maybe I'm too deep. ;)

Thanks to the publisher who provided a review copy in exchange for an honest review. This title is now available.

You and I
will be
lost and found
a thousand times
along this
cobbled
road of us.

When you don’t have the prowess of stringing your thoughts with rhythmic phrases, and you still dream to be called a poet, often you do what’s plausibly the most obvious alternative: Just write the sentences, and press the Enter key in random places. You have written a prose-poem, congratulations!

Just know this, pal, it’s not that easy. Don’t insult Rimbaud, he suffered enough to die young.

Love is
throwing yourself into a stormy sea
hoping there are arms to catch you
knowing that without the leap
there is only the safe
and lonely shore.

Ah, all that is definitely well put. But, even without sounding like a snob, I came across dozens of these stuffs whenever I misuse my spare time in social media. There are probably two things that make this one not so tedious: decent photographs that are quite in relevance, and content that isn’t at all obsequious. Exuberant yet imitative, to sum it briefly. I however came across something that did feel from the heart, in a friend’s quaint words:

“And, it was wonderful for me, a woman, to be reminded that the world is also full of beautiful men who love and cherish women for the playful, complicated and stunning creatures they are. Men who would never harm a woman or take anything from her by force. Men who help women put on their coats, brush the errant hairs from their eyes, and are attentive to their protection and well-being, even in their sleep.”

It certainly feels great that the quotes that so failed to impress me, managed to captivate someone as such. I have linked Julie’s excellent review, though it may seem to be on the opposite end of the spectrum, despite being much more alluring.

This book may have proved to be suitable for me, had I been someone who’s looking for some non-engaging stuff to finish his or her Goodreads goal? (I still don’t get these things…it’s not like you are going to die or something if you don’t.) I practically found it more underwhelming, for I read Anna Shtorm’s Friends Over Lovers just a few months ago, and it’s much, much better, while still being underrated. This one would have been more congenial for me if I read it on Instagram, quotes like:

I want to be with someone
who dreams of doing everything in life,
and nothing
on a rainy Sunday afternoon.

I do love to get nostalgic on those occasions, though. Maybe with some book I have had read for a zillionth time.

Honestly don't know why I keep doing this to myself. I know I don't like modern poetry, but damn does the aesthetic of these collections get me every time.
Every time I pick up one of these collections, it's like reading tumblr posts that have been regurgitated over and over again. None of it seems all that original or was all that inspiring. Plus, this collection had photography, but I don't wanna know how much they spent on StockPhoto because they all seemed like things I've seen before?
There were a few poems that sparked my interest or I felt I could get behind. The rest were just so-so and I hate saying that about poetry, but I know it's MY taste that makes me dislike this, not because it might not be good.

okay, as a whole, i would NEVER recommend this. listen to me. there are some good poems here, but there is just so much trash too. and the good parts aren't worth the trash. the parts that made me feel something were the handwritten ones - not only were some of the best, they felt meaningful and so i felt affected by them. and then. you see something like this:

Sometimes
I want a quiet life
other times
I want to go
a little bit
fucking Gatsby.

i mean...this is poetry? i wonder how much time it took him to come up with that. if it was over a minute thats just embarrassing im sorry but what the heck

I fought
my eyes to stay awake
no dream was prettier
than the way she slept.

this is lowkey real creepy. it's like borderline edward cullen stalking creepy, except worse bc u can actually sleep but ur choosing to like not so u can stare at her. umm. no thank you. i will not feel the feels from this creepy vibes

here's the poem that annoyed me the fucking most:

Brushing a girl’s hair
behind her ear
once a day
will solve more problems
than all those
therapists
and drugs.

HOLY SHIT! I CAN'T BELIEVE HE'S CURED ALL MENTAL ILLNESSES! ALL WE EVER NEEDED TO DO WAS TUCK A GIRL'S HAIR BEHIND HER EAR!! wow! how did NO one figure that out? shit, all the people who need medication for the chemical imbalance in their brains should just throw it away. bc like fuck having a way to live your life despite ur illness and having people help u through it right?

and it's really fuckin annoying bc later he says:

Youth came over me like a mad storm.
I was helpless to the chemicals
roaring in my brain.

so...he gets that our brains are sometimes our worst enemies and YET he still publishes a poem being shitty about therapists and medication for ~the indie aesthetic~

okay as for the thing that made me give it 2 stars! the handwritten ones. look how good this is :

We are astrologers of bodies and mind searching for truths in each other's stars.

like, that's not bad. i will pay him $5 to keep writing handwritten things

I listened to the audiobook whenever I was too busy to sit and read.
This author is in love with love, with human emotion. With one perfect imperfect girl.
He exhorts you to live life and to love fearlessly and wildly.
I've ordered more of his poetry. You can't just take one dose of this wild nectar.
Very beautifully read, and written, in both of this book of poetry's formats.
Highly recommended.

I found the poetry lazy and cliche, and the fact that some images were free internet photos instead of a collab with another artist? Embarrassing to poetry and art. Cliche and sentimental and I’m sick of male ‘poets’ talking about what women ‘need’
