The Knowing the Bible series is a resource designed to help Bible readers better understand and apply God’s Word. These 12-week studies lead participants through books of the Bible and are made up of four basic (1) reflection questions help readers engage the text at a deeper level; (2) “Gospel Glimpses” highlight the gospel of grace throughout the book; (3) “Whole-Bible Connections” show how any given passage connects to the Bible’s overarching story of redemption, culminating in Christ; and (4) “Theological Soundings” identify how historic orthodox doctrines are taught or reinforced throughout Scripture. With contributions from an array of influential pastors and church leaders, these gospel-centered studies will help Christians see and cherish the message of God’s grace on every page of the Bible.
The book of Deuteronomy contains the final words of Moses to Israel as they wait to enter the Promised Land. Reflecting on the nation’s past mistakes, Moses calls Israel to faithful obedience while recounting the past faithfulness of God. This study guide helps Christians understand that the only hope for obedience to God's commands is the grace of God found in the person and work of Jesus.
Matthew H. Patton (PhD, Wheaton College) serves as pastor of Covenant Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Vandalia, Ohio. He is the author of Deuteronomy: A 12-Week Study.
This is a phenomenal Bible study on the book of Deuteronomy. It is perhaps the best study I have yet completed in the "Knowing the Bible" series (and all of them have been excellent). Matthew Patton really digs into Deuteronomy; his questions are deep yet accessible and his commentary on "Gospel Glimpses," "Whole-Bible Connections," and "Theological Soundings" are very pastoral. I learned a lot about how Deuteronomy fits into the story of redemption and points to Christ as our redeemer and fulfiller of the law. Many people may be intimidated in studying Deuteronomy but it really is a great book to study and is highly applicable. If you do choose to study it, I recommend using this Bible study.
So thankful for this walk through Deuteronomy! The study guide did a fantastic job of balancing commentary with encouraging readers to seek their own answers from the text. I have such a deeper understanding of this relatively unknown book of the Bible after reading this guide and answering its questions.
This isn't as in depth as other studies, I still have questions but that's more due to the complexity of the book of Deuteronomy itself. However, I did learn so much and am so in awe of what God has done.
