لا يمكن أن تصبح أي رواية لها شأن إلا إذا أثرت في وجدان قارئها واحتفظ عقله وقلبه بأطلال منها بل واستطاع إسقاط ما فيها على واقعه وفي أي زمن ..
رواية كوخ العم توم تتحدث عن فترة العبيد في أمريكا وحالهم ما قبل التحرير
لا يهم كثيراً مجريات الأحداث فنحن جميعا نعرف كيف هو حال من سُلبت حريته وعومل كقطعة نقود قيمته تساوي ما يقوم به من أعمال وليس بسبب إنسانيته
ما يهمنا هو أنماط النفس البشرية التي يمكن بسهولة ملاحظتها على أوضاعنا الحالية وفي أي زمان آخر وعندها نجد أنه مازال هناك عبيد رغم عدم وجود صكوك ملكية وأنه مازال هناك أسياد مستبدين لا يعنيهم من تكون ، وهناك دائماً بين كلا الطرفين عبيد وأسياد على قدر كبير من التسامح والمحبة أو من الشجاعة والإقدام والتحدي لكل ماهو جائر وظالم وهؤلاء فقط من تحررت أرواحهم ورفضوا أن تصبح مملوكة لأحد أو مالكة لروح أخرى
وهذه الأرواح الحرة يمتد أثرها ليس فقط لنفسها بل كل من حولها يستطيع الحصول على نورها .

وهذه الأرواح الحرة يمتد أثرها ليس فقط لنفسها بل كل من حولها يستطيع الحصول على نورها .
