Geek Actually #1.10

Well, Actually...

Rate this book

This is the 10th episode of Geek Actually, a 13-episode serial from Serial Box Publishing. This episode written by Rachel Stuhler.

Meet your new best girlfriends in this sexy, genre-busting serial that's all about feminism, friendship, and fandom.

Elli’s life is looking up—her new job involves going to cons (as part of the job!), Ruby is a total rockstar, and the world is generally feeling pretty sparkly lately. But when it all comes to a screeching halt, Elli struggles to face the challenges ahead. Taneesha and Diego meet their own major challenge . . . and it just might not be one they can overcome.

Join this tight-knit group of lady geeks as they navigate the ups and downs of their personal and professional lives. Michelle is a hard-nosed fantasy and sci-fi editor used to things going her way. Taneesha is a talented video game programmer used to being the odd (wo)man out. Aditi is a fantasy writer on the verge of her big break. Christina is a rebel on the sidelines of Hollywood. And Elli is a fan-of anything and everything that keeps her from "proper adulting." They might live far apart, but through the power of the internet and a shared love of all things geek, they are ready to face the world together.

Rachel Stuhler grew up in Rochester, NY, so obsessed with movies and books that she spent as little time as possible in the real world. In her late teens, this obsession led her first to New York as a terrible production assistant and then to Los Angeles, where she spent four years working as a script supervisor (and pining after writing jobs) until one day an actor told her, “If you think you can do it better yourself, just do it.”

Within a year, Rachel had sold TV movies to Lifetime and Hallmark and because she doesn’t know when to quit, began dreaming of writing a novel. After forcing countless crew members, family, and friends to read manuscripts, Rachel came to write Absolutely True Lies. She continues to work on TV movies and plot her next move in world domination, or reading about world domination, which is more fun and a lot less work.

Taneesha's relationship is going well with Diego it seems, and they are ready to take it to the next level with Netflix and Chill the gamers way, but what happens when the pair end up in an argument about Taneesha's doxing and what Diego calls her feminist rant. We later learn that Diego supports and is part of the Gamergate community. This got me thinking about GamerGate as it was a big thing last year with the Male vs. Female gamers. For those who don't sure want GamerGate was it concerned the issues of sexism and progressivism in video game culture, stemming from a harassment campaign conducted primarily through the use of the hashtag #GamerGate. This is a deal breaker for Taneesha as she knows what it is like to be a female in the gaming world. Can Taneesha and Diego's relationship stand firm or will this be game over for the both of them? Sadly, this episode had a lot of Game Over moments as we read that Ruby has passed away and now where does that leave Ellie, her assistant? Episode #10 featured the issues of #Gamergate and Death. I have been enjoying this serial and will be sad to see it end as I only have three more episodes to read before it ends.

Another fun fast romp with Michelle and crew. Taneesha can't seem to catch a break things being so bad with work I'm hoping things turn around for her soon. I'm looking forward to seeing what will happen next with everyone.

Received this book from Netgalley for an honest review.

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

I liked Aditi's take-charge attitude in this episode but I'm getting more and more worried about these ladies as this series continues. We've only got 3 episodes left and everything just keeps getting worse and worse for them. I really hope this isn't going to be one of those 'the ending sucks because real life sucks' kind of stories because the only reason I'm really sticking around is because I want to see things get better for them.

This book series never fails to impress me from the genuine friendships to the intersectional feminist gems which align well with current political context, this continues to entertain and engage!

Well, Actually...
Geek Actually, Book 1.10

I Picked Up This Book Because: Continuing the series

The Characters:

Aditi Sodhi, Christina Webber, Elli Kelman, Michelle Andrada, Taneesha Adams:

The Story:

I think the world just exploded. Life is a mess all around. I’m still not on board with this relationship of Christina’s though Vivi is proving to have a heart. Taneesha and Diego are definitely off and I can’t say I disagree with her. Michelle is… I don’t even know how she is. I feel so bad for Elli, losing such a kindred spirit is so difficult. I’m sure Aditi is feeling rejected. This is a mess mess mess.

Today I'm here to co-review episode 1.10 along with Kelly from BookCrushin. We've been listening to the serial together and agreed to co-review every 5 episodes. Let's be real...We spend Wednesdays talking about Geek Actually so this is just an excuse to share it with you all ;).

Do you think Diego can redeem himself? Can he be reformed? Is he willing to learn from his gamergate stance?

K: As much as I wanted these two to succeed as a couple, I am thankful that Taneesha discovered this aspect about Diego, before things were taken to the next level. I want to hope that he could learn from her, if he truly cared, but I am so affected by current events in our world right now and I just want Taneesha to walk away.

CJ: I want to believe people can learn. Hopefully he went home and googled some of the stuff Taneesha was telling him. But if he can’t, better they learned that now. It’s tough when you’re in a serious relationship and you find out the person’s ideologies are not what you thought they were.

Elli's response to tragedy was impressive. How do you think she will fare after the initial shock wears off?

K: I was not expecting Elli to react the way she did, she just collected herself, and got right to work. I was impressed. I think I would have curled up in a ball and cried for days. She was deeply connected and learned so much and I think that has helped Elli really grow as a character and I hope she keeps kicking ass.

CJ: Well, Elli handled that a lot better than I did. I had to back up and listen several times. That plot point came out of left field and I don’t think I’ve recovered yet. Anyways, I hope she never changes. She should live on as she did, which is what *spoiler* would have wanted. But first, burn those letters and fight the assholes who think it’s cool to send them.

How do you think Aditi & Michelle will handle this new obstacle in their publishing relationship?

K: Completely fueled by fire, and I don't think the relationship is going to last. I have a sinking feeling that this sequel will never happen and Aditi will breach her contract. I can't say if their relationship will survive that either. I am not sure if it will blacklist Aditi. I can only hope her book is a breakout success so the publisher will do what they can to keep her happy.

CJ: I feel like Aditi and Michelle’s relationship has been the canon waiting to explode behind the scenes. There have been subtle hints along the way but with all the other things going on, their potential eruption has been secondary. They have to figure out how to put their friendship and business in separate buckets - no easy feat.

Christina is definitely experiencing 'being thrown in the deep end' scenario with her new position; do you think she'll learn to swim?

K: Possibly Christina will actually end up loving this job, but I feel like Vivi will not like the working all the time Christina. I also hope that maybe her fast lane life might slow down a little as she learns her responsibilities and understands her importance to the show.

CJ: I feel like most creative jobs are this way. Sink or swim. Christina’s new job looks like a challenge, which could crumble her with everything going on with Vivi. She’s going to need her girlfriends!

What are you hopes for the final 3 episodes of the series? Big shocking theories?

K: Assuming we get a little closure on some story lines and I expect there to be a season 2, I want Elli to become a champion for her work and become well known. I want Taneesha to find some solace and happiness in life, and maybe a whole new job. I would love for Aditi to rock the book world, and write a kick ass sequel. I want Michelle to tell her publisher who supports dickhead men to go shove it. Christina to find a balance between being responsible and having a life.

CJ: GEEZ the worst part is you know some stuff is going to be left unfurled since seasons go on but I hope we don’t get some Grey’s Anatomy level ending here. I hope Taneesha gets some resolution with the crap at work. I really just want management to step the hell up.

After some progress in the previous chapter we get the most depressing episode so far. New bad stuff along with more of the old bad stuff, and nothing positive at all for balance.
