Some secrets should remain hidden, exposing them can get you killed. Julian wants a normal life, the only trouble is, he isn’t normal. When Adam and Harry come into the petrol station looking for trouble, though, their actions threaten to expose his secret, a secret that would make him a wanted man - wanted by lots of people, for lots of reasons. Now he has to leave behind the life he’s been building and start over again, but before he does that, Adam and Harry must pay. This is a novella of approx 8,000 words
After working in the clerical, warehouse and retail industries over the years, without gaining much satisfaction, Alex quit to follow his dream and become a full-time writer. His non-writing dream is to one day earn enough to travel, with a return to Egypt to visit the parts he missed before, and Macchu Picchu, top of his wishlist of destinations. When not writing, he is either playing a game or being distracted by Molly the Yorkie, who is greedy for both attention and whatever food is to be found.
This is the second short story I've read by Alex Carver, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. In very short order and with concise narration, we learn a lot about Julian. I loved the twist of this 'unique' individual living such a mundane life and would've appreciated seeing that expounded on more, but at the same time the story looses nothing without it. If you enjoy revenge tales with a sprinkling of supernatural this one's for you!
This is a short story about a being different from humans: a mythical creature we all learn to either love or hate, a vampire. My only pet peeve is that it's too short and the blurb gives it all away. However, if you are looking for a sample of the author's style, it's an entertaining and cheap way to discover it. This could make a good prequel to a series.
I'm giving it a 3.5 for while it is well written, it lacks a bit of originality.
Up front, I will confess that this is a bit more violent than my usual reading choices. Of course, stories of revenge usually are. This is one such story about a vampire who is out to get those who thought they'd killed him. Despite this, I found the story interesting, though I do feel as if there could be more. We don't really know much about Julian and it might be fun to learn more. My only nitpick is that there is some repetitive information. Beyond that, a nice, quick read.
Reader thoughts I'm the wrong target audience. This book uses the F word quite a few times, and it's just a novella!
I loved the idea of It's perfect. It has the right humor and mix of creepy paranormal.
Then Julian goes around killing people who were sort of his friends. That made me stop caring.
Writer thoughts: Despite the many vampire stories, this one stayed fresh. Aside from the spoiler mentioned above, this story had 2 ideas to keep the story/character somewhat different.
1, the sunlight kills vampires (kills them again?). It turns them to ash, not just burns them.
2, a drugged human's blood is useless. That's right, drugs in the system might save your life, which is not necessarily a good message, but interesting nonetheless. Drugs in the system also means you could die for no reason.
