You can't believe everything you see. Reeling from the events that took place at the King House, Abel Hale and Elise Morgan have been sent to a new haunting at the house of Cody Cain. Except thanks to overhearing a private conversation between Abel and the evil Silas Ford, Elise isn't sure she can trust Abel, much less work with him. That fact breaks her heart because she had begun having real feelings for him, feelings that won't go away no matter how much she tries. As a former frat house, Cody's home has seen its share of good times. It has also seen its share of pain, suffering, and death. Six months ago, the paranormal activity in the house skyrocketed, forcing Cody to ask for help from the producers of Dark and Deadly Things, namely Silas. The house is something Elise has never seen before. The walls move, time jumps in and out, and nothing is ever the same. It is as if the house is in a time loop, moving and swaying from past to present. Caught in the loop is the ghost of Andrew Scott (no relation to the actor). He has his own secrets and a connection to Elise that will rock her already upended world. With two days to find out what is going on at the Cain house, Abel and Elise have to use every trick they've learned so far to not only figure out what exactly is going on, but what it means to for them. Because something evil has taken residence at the Cain house, something that knows Abel and Elise all too well. *A Southern Gothic Tale*
Kelly Martin is an author and developmental editor who lives in a possibly haunted house in a small southern town. While she'd like to say paranormal things only happen to her at her home, it would be a lie, mainly because she searches them out in some of America's most haunted locations. Whether it is talking to the ghosts of Waverly Hills or the spirits of Thomas House Hotel, these events inevitably land in some of Kelly's books. Just wait until you read The Haunting of Micah Reed.
Dark and Dreadful Things by Kelly Martin continues the paranormal activity adventure with the ghost hunting duo! A ghost and something different is in this story! Lots of strange back history comes up on their parents too! Creepy!
The sign of a well written ghost story is when even on paper it leaves you haunted and scared. This one left me spooked! My husband knocked something other on his nightstand and I almost jumped out of bed, lol. I was very tense reading this installment and I loved every minute of it. Dark & Dreadful Things (Bk3) is my favorite in the series. Abel and Elise are the new Ed and Lorraine Warren.
I’m going to do a review of the series as a whole and just repeat it for each volume, for a couple of reasons. 1) Much more many series, all of these books really function together as a unit, each one ending as a cliffhanger. Although I think they could stand alone, they really make more sense taken together. 2) I read through them all in a row and so quickly that they’re all one book in my mind and I don’t know how I would break the reviews out, especially without major spoilers.
So, these books are AMAZING. They’re funny, scary, sweet, and full of twists and turns. I burned through all of them in just a couple of days because each ended on a cliff hanger and I had to know what came next. Some of the twists I saw coming, or at least guessed at, but others took me utterly by surprise. There were a couple of things that I thought Our Heroine should have figured out sooner, but I’m also aware that I’m reading a book, and that everything detail means something or is a clue. Real life isn’t like that, and you’re not going to assume that every weird moment is actually a key to your situation.
There are some really original takes on ghosts, hauntings and various forms of possession, along with a lot of wit and humor and pop culture references.
Also, there are some things that happen in the first couple of books that seem like they’re forgotten or they aren’t going anywhere, only to come back around and become incredibly important at the end. I was glad when items I took to be plot holes actually came full circle in the end, instead of unused tidbits that never went anywhere. I’m thoroughly impressed and looking forward to reading the rest of the author’s works.
This was a great book that took me no time to read, I liked the first one a lot and devoured this one just as quickly. But WOW did I want to slap Elise sometimes...I mean, why with her gift all these years and she still freaks out everytime she sees something? And deferring to Abel all the time, seriously? And not communicating important things when she should? Thats the number one rule in horror situations...COMMUNICATION! Instead there's dialogue I could care less about, like how she likes Abel blah blah blah. Great...but honestly you have this awesome gift , wouldnt you be exploring it so much more?? Wouldn't you, after all this time, have figured out the charades thing with ghosts? or, I don't know...wrote down the alphabet and pointed to letters to communicate? Instead its just "Sorry I can't hear you". So frustrating! I'll keep reading but I hope Elise's character gets a little better.
Thankfully this book wasn't as scary as the last one, but it was still just as messed up.
Elise and Abel are on assignment at a former frat house that contains a rather attractive male ghostie whom died his human death back in the 90's. Abel is convinced he's evil. Elise thinks he's the key to solving their problems and a battle of wills unfolds. But to be honest, what is the deal with Abel? There's something going on with him. Can you trust a man who keeps secrets, especially when he demands transparency from you?
Nope.
So good. I'm loving this story. Each book is short and sweet, but with a kick. On a personal note, I didn't have any nightmares last night and I'm thrilled. Now it's time for book 4.
In this book we are brought to an all-too-interesting location where we meet a very fun character soon after arriving at the assignment location and we pick up a few pieces to this series haunted puzzle. This book was not long enough for me to be thoroughly satisfied. I felt like I had few too many questions left unanswered. I also feel like it takes Elise longer than it should for her to pick up on what is going on with Abel. I really thought we discovered or were able to draw the conclusion in the first and second book. Also, as much as I love Abel's character he frustrates the crap out of me! Sooo thankful there is a book following this. :)
I'll explain why but I shall start with the positives.
This series is getting creepier and creepier and it honestly is brilliant! I'm still loving the characters and the general plot line which jeeps getting darker and weirder, also the individual plot lines are pure madness. Still fantastically written. Yeah there's a few grammatical errors here and there but I'm not reviewing that 🤣
Now the negatives, which there is only one. The on off, he loves me no he hates me, I love him no i hate him is getting a tad annoying. That being said I can look past this and only knock a star off well half a star if I could.
After pushing through two rough books, #3 finally gets some forward momentum in the plot, and Elise stops obsessively thinking about her virginity long enough to allow for some actual storyline to sneak in.
About heckin' time.
The mystery mostly deepens, but there are little crumbs starting to drop about how everyone is connected and who the woman in black is.
I love her writing style and the characters in this story. The woman in black freaks me out so badly, I am afraid to leave my bed without the light being on. This book in particular had some creepy points to it, but overall is a very good paranormal romance. I am planning on reading every single book I can get moly hands on by her!
Been enjoying this series and the characters developing and the hot and cold or not knowing what the characters will do next and what occurrences mean for each of them. This book gives us a little more information on the Hale’s and the Morgan’s in their college years. Looking forward to reading the next one in the series.
Really not sure why I'm reading these. It should be called Dumb & Dumber Things. Somewhere in here is a decent ghost story, but holy moly is it watered down with the super melodramatic main character's horned up 14-year-old emotions (even though she's supposedly in her 20s). Just a couple of really annoying characters that completely pull you away from anything interesting going on.
Sometimes in series the more books in, the writing and story seem to drift off and become boring or less exciting! Not in this series! This series is so much spooky fun that I can not put it down!
I like the concept of this series for the most part but some of the dialogue is tough to swallow. I'm also finding it very repetitive but now I must find out how this ends so on to book 4!
This series of books just gets better! The ending leaves me anxiously looking forward to the next book in the series. Great suspense and paranormal mystery runs throughout the story!
Actually finished four and five, too. Unique and good story but drug out toooooooo long. Four would have been plenty. Still, good reads for this time of year.
I liked the storyline and that it was more straightforward than book two, thus making it easier to follow. There were less repeated lines so we didn't have the constant reminders that Elise didn't want to be the helpless girl or that she was worried about her feelings for Abel. I really appreciated these things because I could stop getting annoyed and focus on the actual story. Kelly Martin is a fantastic storyteller.
The overall plot of this series is original and terrifying-just like I like my horror novels. Despite the critiques, I DO recommend these books and whenever someone asks for a good horror she is one of the first authors I mention.

Exciting and hair raising twists and turns continue to keep me captivated and glued to my seat. This third installment does not disappoint and a startling connection is discovered. I am completely hooked on this series and look forward to the next supernatural installment as it's anyone's guess on what could happen next. A superbly written series that keeps you looking over your shoulder and wondering where the glitches will appear next.
This is becoming one of my favorite series. Lots of connections get revealed and some secrets are found out. I couldn't put this down. Elise and Abel's partnership takes some interesting turns and the results are unexpected. Silas? Ugh. He's just so grrr. The ending? Makes waiting for book 4 hard.
Read this book in 5 hours and for someone that reads slow, I am rather impressed with myself. Couldn't put it down. Needed to know what happens between Adel and Elise. Kelly Martin did it again and out of the three I think this one is my favorite so far. I cannot wait for book 4 to come out! Typical, ending with a cliffhanger! You will he the death of me, Kelly. Love this series! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I started reading this at 9:30 last night and quickly realized I wasn't going to get much sleep because I could not put it down it was so good! DDT3 took some expected twists and made some interesting connections that I didn't see coming and I was hooked throughout the whole book. Each book is better than the one before and I can't wait to see where Kelly takes us in book 4!
