Stolen Magic. Rising Truths. Old Demons. Welcome to Copperwood Falls.

The dust had barely settled after my skirmish at Galloway Asylum and there I was looking forward to some downtime, maybe even a promotion. What I got instead was a covert assignment and an urgent warning from on high: Get out of the city. Vanish. Go underground.
So I did. And after a quick, or should I say bad trip down the wrong side of memory lane I found myself holing up in a sleepy rural town on a strictly cloak and dagger mission.

Copperwood Falls. Think rolling forested hills, white picket fences and lush apple pie - with a maggot wriggling under the crust.
A haunted town where the woods whisper at night and demons come calling. A place where the shadows are restless and almost nothing is as it seems

Catching on to the town’s dirty little secrets didn’t take long, but I’d never imagined, not for one minute, exactly what opening the lid on that particular Pandora’s Box was going to bring…

Stay to the Shadows!

Backstory:

Morgan Rook is once again on a mission but it is of his own making as he is not suppose to be running amok as the Organization wanted him to go in low mode for awhile, but he has his own agenda as he is trying to track down the murderer of his wife and it seems the road leads to a place called Copperwood Falls.

Once Morgan lands in Copperwood Falls he finds out that the woman responsible for his wife's murder just seems to be on the outskirts of his reach. But the more he digs to find this woman the more he seems to land in hot water and this time Morgan might have a hard time extracting himself out of his predicament as the supernatural entities that are protecting the woman will do anything they can to keep Morgan from getting within range!

Thoughts:

This book just didn't seem to have the non-stop action like the first book as there was more mystery and suspense wrapped within the story. There is still the sorcery though that the character Morgan dishes out to the supernatural beings but the book seemed to slow down in some parts.

I felt that it was up and down with the action - there would be some and then it was back to being slow. The pacing was not as fast as the first book but the writing style was still smooth. All in all the story was great and the last 30% of the book the action seemed to pick back up and it kept moving till the end of the story. Giving this book four "Supernatural Shadows stars!

Intense, edgy and dangerous are only a few words that I can write for this review. The second book in the "Morgan Rooks" series was a serious page turner. I didn't want to put it down, although I had to for a short time. Morgan is still intent on avenging Willow, his dead girlfriend and the deaths of his mentor and new friends. Sent on a mission to discover a "Dark crystal" factory his runs into enemies and New friends. His dark side comes out to help save the day a few times. A book and series well worth reading. Adventure, violence, death and revenge. Great book.

Another great read

Kit pulled it off against. It is a little dark and a little shorter than I expected, but I truly enjoyed the story. Please keep it up, I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

This is my review of the audio version as posted on Audible:

The second adventure of Morgan Rook is intriguing, dark and unputdownable...:) I liked the first book in the series, though I thought the pace of the story was a bit uneven. This installment, however, takes you on a fast ride and never slows down.

This time Morgan has to find out why there are people going missing around a small town of Copperwood Falls. It's a good thing he has a task to do as the Organization seems to have a problem with his latest job at the Asylum - it's probably better for him to get away from their radar for a while. And so Morgan goes undercover - and as ususal he gets himself into much more than he expected...

Morgan Rook is one of those characters readers love - complex, sometimes confusing, with a lot of secrets in his past that he himself is unaware of. There is a lot of grey to him, but there is also moral strength that has kept him on the good side - so far... And though we may have thought we knew all there was to know about him in the first book, we realize as we follow him in this case that there is definitely much more in store for us to discover about him...

The imagery and the storytelling by Kit Hallows is very cinematic, and the first person narration makes the story even more engaging. Shawn Compton's interpretation adds another layer to the experience - he doesn't read Morgan's story, he IS Morgan Rook telling you about his adventures:) It's a perfect interpretation of the book.

Disclaimer.
I had requested and received audible version of this book for free from the narrator, in exchange for an unbiased review.

What I liked about the book -
Even though this is the second book of the series, and I hadn't read the first book, I didn't feel like I'm missing a huge chunk of the story or anything. This book works absolutely fine as a standalone, because this series is mostly a "mystery of the day" episodic series where each book has a new story.

This was an entertaining read, with dollops of mystery and thrill throughout the book. Rook's character is very interesting and makes you root for him. He keeps the story intriguing, which moved at a comfortable pace.

What I disliked about the book -
Nothing specific that I can think of.

Narration -
Narration by Shawn Compton was a good match for the content.

* My review is for the audiobook format. *

Morgan Rook continues fighting the good fight against all creatures dark and creepy. Steering clear of The Organization since the asylum debacle, he packs an arsenal of magical potions and embued weapons, and goes undercover to investigate the disappearance of several Copperwood Falls residents. He discovers the dark secrets of a backwoods town that will test his abilities and his sanity.

Author, Kit Hallows, has served up another exciting installment in the Order of Shadows series. Evil motives and magical weaponry abound wherever our paranormal P.I. turns up, but the thrill keeps me coming back. Shawn Compton gives another great performance full of energy and emotion. Looking forward to book three!

While the underlying arc of this series continues to a certain extent in this instalment, this is still a fairly standalone book too and somebody could choose to jump into the series at this point if they wanted.

The fallout from the previous book sees Morgan Rook assigned to a case intended to get him out of the city, but the sleepy town of Copperwood Falls is not what it seems and he has a new set of problems to deal with before he can leave.

The performance of the narrator is a good one, serving to nicely enhance the book with clear and distinctive tones that help to draw in the listener.

Overall, an entertaining follow-up to the previous book in this series and I will be interested to see how the series progresses.

I really liked this book, great stuff! This is the first in the series that I've listened to, so I probably won't have as much insight as those who've read the others, but all in all I really enjoyed this!! Great story, great writing, and loved the narration! Morgan is awesome! I'd definitely recommend listening and going on this ride, well worth it!! :)

Room is back battling

A dark and confusing tale that draws the reader into the horrors surrounding us. In this story, Rook is battling evil in the form of a town of dark magic. Tidbits of his past collide with his present and his future and he strives to make sense of the evil found in an otherwise beautiful town. Readers who enjoy dark urban fantasy will enjoy this newest tale.

The first book was amazing. We were introduced to a world with much magic and fantasy characters.
This book seemed to be reaching for a reason to keep searching for the girlfriends killer.

Then the author ruined the book. The tired story of someone taking some of the hero's powers. It ruins stories as you always wonder what they could have been. I quit reading after that. It's too bad, it could have also been great.

My review is based on the audiobook. Overall 4 stars Performance 5 stars Story 4 stars
Rook's story continues in this fast paced action packed second book. Filled with twists, turns and tons of magic this story had me captivated from start to finish. The narrator was on point bringing the story and characters to life. I look forward to more from this author and narrator.

I have multiple books on my read list and I had to drop everything to read this ahead of everything else. I am getting drawn into to series very quickly. So much so that as soon as I finish one I have to start on the other. I can myself reading/listening to this series often over the years without a loss of entertainment value. Bravo.

There is definitely growth. Morgan gets a change of scenery and the overall plot thickens! Excellent ongoing character development.
Still very to the point, but the dialogue is flowing and not forced. I find myself getting invested in Morgan Rook. I will be continuing this series.

Supernatural Detective

Great story. I have just recently started reading the Morgan Rook series and am very glad I did. They combine a supernatural deteceive/assasin with a great story which includes humans and monsters. Very hard to put down once I start reading.

A good second book in the series. A lot of action but not a lot revealed. A very good read.

A good sequel to dark city.

Not really the best paranormal thriller I've ever read, but still worth reading. I definitely recommend this series for everyone.

Catchy if uneven.

The core story is entertaining but held back by uneven pacing and repetitive descriptions. That said, I look forward to book three.
