War The Patriotic Wars is a new War World collection of stories featuring the tearing apart of the end of the CoDominium, the Soviet/United States world government that has kept the peace on Earth and throughout human-occupied space for the past century. Now, the alliance is collapsing as the Bronson cabal attempts to take over the Grand Senate and the CoDominium itself. Some even claim the Saurons have a secret role in the breakup of the CoDominium and are behind the growing Patriotic Wars on the Earth. Haven, one of the CoDominium’s poorest and most distant colonies, is one of the first to feel the pinch as its fragile government begins to disintegrate, when the CoDominium authorities recall part of the 77th CoDominium Marines back to Earth. Tensions increase as local warlords and gangs begin to make their grab for power. Those communities farthest from the Shangri-La Valley are most at risk; it’s now up to them to protect themselves from roving bands of blood-thirsty nomads and power-hungry thugs. Some see the CoDominium’s decline as an opportunity, while those on the edge of survival see it as a betrayal. The one thing they all understand is that Haven is now alone and on her own—completely!
I came to the co dominium and war world through a book called Future History, published in paperback by orbit in the uk in the late 1980’s. I have read most of Pournelle’s work on war world/Haven in paper back. I am so excited to find new material what ever format it comes in. Would recommend this book if you are a fan or not. Would suggest you have a look at the sample for War World (The battle of Sauron) and Go tell the Spartans. I loved the exert in this book about the creation of the Langston field it gave some colour and flavour to how the field came about and what it meant for starship and space warfare in the Co Dominium universe. Would like some more stories of what happened on Earth when the Patriotic Wars broke out. I will keep looking
Patriotic Wars fills in a gap in the series covering the downfall of the Condominium
A series of short stories, some linked, on Haven , Earth and the moon (CD HQ). Two are repeats from earlier books, but the remainder appear new. War World is a great series. This book is a good addition. Recommended.
When I first heard war World was being reissued, I was glad. After reading the series, I'm less so. Too much abut the sauron supermen and no real explanation why a dump like haven is so important. The series started out fine and tapered off quickly. Ready needed sine more pournelle influence. Quite a few spelling errors slipped through.
