You ever hear the phrase, “about as successful as a soup sandwich?” Well, that's me, I am the soup sandwich, but instead of a soggy bread mess, you have twenty five year old with a Bachelor’s degree in nothing useful who just quit her job at the local home improvement store where there were definitely no Christian Greys looking to tie anyone up-and that's not a bad thing. I know, it's looking pretty sad right about now, but at least I don't still live with my parents…
So, here I am, embarking on a new journey covering the Funerals and Obituaries section of the local paper, the San Diego Metro News, for the editor-brace yourself-my uncle, Sal. Unfortunately, while my parents are on vacation, my Granny and her friends are determined to stir up some trouble, but this time, they may have bitten off more than they can chew, especially when some of the residents of the local retirement community are turning up unnaturally dead.
There is nothing that will keep me from protecting the people that I love, no matter how crazy they may be--not even the sexy, I mean stubborn, homicide detective Trent Foyle can stop me--My name is Shelby Whitmore and I'm kind of the newest reporter for the San Diego Metro News, but hey, I'm a hit with the blue hairs.

She loves a great romance, an alpha hero, and lots and lots of laughter.
I open and close my mouth like a fish on the dock while he just smiles at me and our grandmothers debate the pros and cons of a Brazilian wax.
Is it all that the romance novels say it’s cracked up to be?” Marla asks innocently. “I’m just worried that with my hip the way it is now, it would just be a disaster. It was hard enough getting old Harold to give me a second go after I broke my hip, you know, with Harold.”
There is another uniformed officer in the room, and I’m about to complain about having a man touch me so intimately when I realize the giant man with a blond mustache is actually a woman named Sally. She looks as if she brooks no bullshit, so I don’t even argue as she instructs me to strip out of my clothes and then does things that I would usually require her to buy me dinner and a movie first, at the very least.
“Son, I know that look,” my dad says. “You need to either batten down the hatches or run. You might want to choose the latter. She did get the top honor at scout camp for knife-throwing. Six years in a row.”
My Review:
Dead and Buried was a fun and comical read that frequently had me smirking and chortling. A hybrid cozy mystery/romantic comedy, this amusing tale was written from the first person POV from a red-headed, hot mess, accident prone, Calamity Jane type named Shelby. I adored her. I also enjoyed the levity, banter, outrageous situations, deliciously steamy bits, feisty seniors, and a bevy of quirky characters. The plot was active, eventful, steamy, amusing, and highly entertaining. While keeping tabs on her wayward grandmother and starting a new job, Shelby seemed to bounce from one humiliating catastrophe to another. Shelby’s new employment had her attending funerals and writing obituaries, and despite her hopes of making a good impression while attending her first job-related event, Shelby managed to fall into an open grave. Nor did her day improve as she later ran naked into a closed sliding glass door at home after being startled by a staggeringly handsome police officer. A good gander at her naked body slamming into a glass door was apparently the recipe for love as he was smitten.
However, even odder things started happening to Shelby although first, along with her favorite indulgence, she received a warning about a bad man from her past while buying lunch from her favorite taco dealer/street vendor – a man who self-reported having “the sight.” At the same time, odd events and an increase in accidents and deaths were occurring at the swanky retirement village where her grandmother was currently residing. Despite being in their 80’s, the well-dressed, spry, great-grandchild obsessed, and highly spirited grannies were not buying the explanation that old people die, so of course, they turned to Shelby for assistance in launching their own investigation, who better? Hijinks and shenanigans ensued.
Over the course of the book poor Shelby experienced several blows to the head and while I feared for her gray matter, one of the after effects was quite humorous as she was prone to verbalizing her inappropriate thoughts aloud - I wish I had an excuse for that same tendency... I enjoyed this book start to finish and will be eagerly awaiting future tales of Shelby’s adventures.
I haven’t laughed this hard during a book in awhile. So much I couldn’t read at night in bed because I didn’t want to wake my husband. This is my first read from Jennifer Rebecca. I came across the book when Kruse Images and Photography posted the cover reveal. The title intrigued me and maybe the fact BT Urruela is on the cover. So glad I one clicked!!
Shelby Whitmore, the newest reporter of Funerals and Obituaries for the San Diego Metro News, seems to attract craziness. She has a psycho ex, a hysterical grandma who is never afraid to say what she wants when she wants, and a sexy detective who is bound and determined to make Shelby fall for him, just not into an open grave at the funeral. He will go to any length to get her attention, even go to senior yoga class that Shelby, her grandmother, her grandma’s best friend she learns is Trent’s grandma, and several other seniors who should not be doing yoga after chili Tuesday (the class is cut short when the noxious fumes become too much for the instructor). But when several residents of the retirement home start turning up mysteriously dead or with serious injuries, she knows something is amiss at the retirement community. Shelby, her grandmother, and her grandmother’s best friend make it their mission to find out what is going on. Let the fun begin.
Trent Foyle is a detective for the San Diego Police Department. His crazy grandmother happens to live in the same retirement community as Shelby’s. His attraction to Shelby does not go unnoticed by his grandmother and Shelby’s. With two old ladies who will say anything, they become his allies in trying to get Shelby to go out with him. Little does he know that Shelby is a magnet for crazy and seems to find trouble wherever she goes. As gorgeous as she is, he’s not sure he can date anyone who can be as reckless as she is. He has already lost someone close to him with the same tendencies. But he still is willing to put up with all things crazy to get the girl he wants.
Jennifer Rebecca wrote this book so well. I’m pretty sure I want to hang out with her. She has a quick wit that she brings into the story that you just can’t help but laugh at. The situations she gets her characters into will just have you shaking your head. It was refreshing to read a book that brought humor into the storyline. Not only humor, but a great story also that does have a little mystery to it. I’m going back and reading her previous books. If this book is an indication of her writing style, she definitely has a new fan. Thank you Jennifer Rebecca for this great read. Even after I finished, parts still make me laugh and remember the story.
A hilarious, LOL funny romantic comedy/suspense that will bring you to tears!
From the first page of this quirky book, I laughed, snorted and giggled. Between the goofy, meddlesome residents of the retirement home, Trent's relentless pursuit of Shelby and Shelby's inability to function in life, I was swept into the story and just didn't want to put it down. I loved the back and forth banter between Trent and Shelby. The grannies were hysterical with their no-filter selves. There is a fun little mystery going on throughout the book that just adds a fun layer.
Trust me, you need to grab this book. It will bring a smile to your face and having you swooning over the sexy detective!
I got this book in a book box from Kelly Elliot in honor of the Wanted World launch on Kindle!
It took me a bit to get into, but once I did I really enjoyed this read. This book brought all the laughs and even a few smiles. Shelby is surrounded by people that just make her story even more that funny. She is a reporter for the Funerals and Obituaries section fo a paper and that is just the start of it.
Lets add into that a mysterious string of deaths at her grandmother's retirement home, the hunt is on. Add Detective Treny into that and life got even funner.
This reminded me a bit of a Rachel Van Dyken read in the fact that the cast was fantastic.
I can't wait to read more for this author. I actually liked a lot about this book and the author has a great sense of humor. The MC's got very annoying w/ the constant back and forth of I love you/I hate you. The mystery could have all come together better. Also, the heroine is supposed to be strong and comes from a family of fierce women, and a kind, strong father and uncle, but she was engaged to a mentally and physically abusive asshole...I definitely didn't get that. I will read the next one b/c I think the author will improve and the grandmother rocked.
I loved this book. This is the first book I have read of Jennifer's and I couldn't stop thinking about it. Looking forward to the next two in the series
Let's see... Which of my boxes does D&B check... LOL-pee-your-pants funny? CHECK. Off-the-charts-swoon? CHECK. Steam? Oh, yeah. CHECK. Mystery? CHECKITY-CHECK-CHECK.
Honestly, didn't know what to make of this book from the cover and the blurb. It's do much better than I thought. It's the first book in a while that I was sad to have to put down. But I had to sleep. Lol.
Remember The Golden Girls? Take Sophia Petrillo x2 and add an extra splash of sass....voila, Shelby and Trent's grandmothers. I laughed all the way through this book. Shelby the clumsy obituaries writer, Trent the overprotective alpha cop and grandmothers that have absolute!y no filter...a dream team of laughter and endless fun. Jennifer Rebecca digs into the essence of rom com and kicks it up another notch leaving you with a book that will leave you in stitches .
Dead and Buried is book one in the Funerals and Obituaries series by author Jennifer Rebecca. I first found this author through her Claire Goodnite series (which I highly recommend, btw). Her writing was a little quirky, a little crass, pretty sarcastic, and the suspense isn’t so bad, either. And this series takes the quirky, sarcasm, and hilarity to an entirely new level!
Shelby is a writer for the funerals & obits column for her local paper, run by her Uncle Sal. Trent is a smokin’ hot detective. Their grandmothers are BFFs and live pretty much next door to each other. And they are hilariously crazy! Seriously...the grannies totally make this series! They have lived and loved and have no filter whatsoever. So you never know what is going to come flying out of their mouths.
As much as I loved the grannies, there were times I really wanted to smack Trent and tell him to just get over himself and be a man or totally walk away. And this is where I had an issue with the book. Shelby and Trent both seem to be a little wishy-washy, and after the strong characters of the Clair Goodnite series (and the no holds barred grandmas), I was frustrated with them both. But I will say, they are much better-developed characters in book two so don’t give up on them, this series, or this author just yet.
Keep reading and while you’re at it, grab Dead and Gone (book 2 of this series) and you’ll be really glad you stuck with it. Oh...and the grannies totally make hanging in there worth it! This book was written a couple of years ago, and I’m glad I read it after I fell in love with Jennifer Rebecca’s writing in her other books. Because I see a great improvement in her character and world building from the time she wrote this book to her newest release.
NICUnurse’s Rating: I give Dead and Buried 3.5 stars. But remember, I did go on to read book two and loved it, so I really encourage you to do the same!
First off props to a local hometown author. Jennifer really delivered on this book. I loved how shelby was strong willed and mouthy but also submitted to Trent. She had overcame being abused and a few to many hits to the head but didn't have long term Effects thankfully. I LOVED the alpha in Trent from beginning. Overall this book is one of my favs alot of humor, mystery and everyone loves some good sexual scenes. But I can't forget lots inappropriate jokes from senior citizens which was best part. Seriously laughed out loud through most of book. I definitely recommend if looking for your next read.
I had so much hope for this book, after getting halfway through the first time before losing interest I decided to try again and I kind of wish I hadn't... There was the potential, but there was s much that bugged me, the pet name 'baby' being one of them... The way Trenton kept acting and how Shelby reacted to that, the on/off thing all thrown up in one book... It didn't need it. Not to mention I'm positive a lot of the police related stuff is inaccurate. It could have been so good.... But unfortunately, it just wasn't.
If anyone has any suspense rom-coms let me know, I'm in the mood for one and this just didn't satisfy that craving.
There were so many things that I loved about this book. The Grannies were hilarious and I loved that they played a big role in the story. I also loved that there was a little mystery going on throughout it. Shelby and Trent were funny at times, had a good back and forth, but then other times, it kind of drove me crazy. That's probably why I couldn't rate it the whole five stars as there were a few places it made me crazy enough that I skimmed past. It just got to be too much. That being said, overall, I enjoyed the book and plan to continue reading others from this author.
This book had me laughing so hard I was crying! It reminds me a bit of Stephanie Plum, and the moments made me laugh.
There is a very minor mystery that is about the last half of the book. You probably won't guess who the killer is since there aren't many clues to find them. But this isn't a mystery novel; it is more of a romance novel.
Shelby and Trent have an instant connection, and their interactions run the gamut from spicy to tension/fights. They both have a little baggage, which makes them interesting. They could both be annoying at times, but no one is perfect!
There were so many things wrong with this story. The female lead acted like she didn’t have any brains, self respect or backbone. Then the male...he may have been a cop but he stood there and did nothing while another man physically hurt the woman he was “in love with”. Seriously? From that point on, I checked out on this book.
This plot had so much potential but it fell way short. The MMC treated the FMC like absolute garbage and she kept going back to him. She was supposed to be thing strong women but she had no backbone. Also, the writing felt choppy. I feel like we would suddenly change topics in the middle of a thought. I would not recommend.
Golden girls meet gossip girl.... If your after a lighthearted, witty, romantic read with lots of pop culture references and lols then this book is for you.
I laughed so often in this book! Great story with great angst. Are they gonna get together, stay together, work it out?? Smexy bedroom scenes were also on point. Highlights: vomiting on the phlebotomist and drug spoon necklace. Tell me those scenes don’t make you laugh out loud!!
4.5 Hot Detective with a side of crazy old grannies stars
Dead & Buried was my first Jennifer Rebeca book and fortunately for all parties involved, it won't be my last. I really liked Shelby. She was funny and entertaining. Trent was a hot alpha but at times didn't know if he wanted to be possessive or sweet. Their back and forth gave me romantic whiplash. And half the time I had no freaking clue what the hell was going on in the story...but I LOVED IT. I could not put this book down. Dead & Buried was an awesome romance with a twist of suspense and some crazy, "I wish they were my grannies" old ladies.
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. To read more reviews like this one, check out Obsessive Book Nerd!
