Sixteen Novellas in collection - As always with a collection, the works are uneven - some amazing and some bad.
Crimson Metal by Nathan Squiers - A mashup of two different novel series by the author to provide exposure to his works which does deliver on the author's promise of working as a stand-alone without overloading on exposition. The problem is I could not get into either set of protagonists. The profanity is so intruding on the dialogue, which is suppose to be vulgar but witty exchanges in the lines of Reservoir Dogs, I couldn't follow it. It kept me from identifying with the first group of characters. The second major character just wasn't sympathetic - he walked in bribing people, promising to kill someone, blowing things up, etc - a good anti-hero type, but I didn't have time to build interest in him before the action so I didn't care what happened. End the end I skipped through at least half the words because I was searching for anything readable about characters I could care for. (one star)
Crimson Steel was a really bad choice for the "opening" to the series as the language is so offputting, many readers may not go any further. Which would be a shame, since some of the rest of the collection is really good.
Shadow Shifter by Jane Hinchey - Good. Lovely light romantic urban fantasy mystery - goes for all the comfortable cliques and is a soft, warm, fuzzy blanket. Ending a little too fast and pat - highlighting some of the limitations of the Novella form. This manuscript could easily have been expanded to double the size before the final reveal and been a satisfying meal instead of just a fun dessert. (A sex scene - four stars Goodreads scale; five stars Amazon scale)
Rogue Pack by Art Deforest - Nonstop action thriller with wonderful tactics proving an Army (of normals) is better than a mob of paranormals. Loved this. Well written, tight plotting, great characters. This is what Urban Fantasy should be. (five stars)
Pack? What Pack, Were? by Paul C. Middleton - Delightful read, though has some duplicate word/idea issues a good line editor should have caught. Example "gave Mum a lot of advice" ... next paragraph "Your Mother gets advice". The world concept and characters were so interesting I went to look what else is available in the Mongrelverse world Mr. Middleton has created. (four stars)
Hereafter by H.J. Lawson - Each of the sixteen chapters of this novella reads like a short story, complete with a recap of everything which happened before. Often pieces of information is introduced "bam" instead of woven into the storyline - something fine for short stories but not for longer works. The whole manuscript needs a good edit - at least line editing and proofreading, but a good structural editing would be beneficial too. My biggest killer was chapter four which opens with "two weeks later" but soon talks about "you need to get out of your apartment. It's been months"; from this part forward the timeline gets murky ... for everything. Clearly the writer is a pantser, each chapter is read tightly in-and-of itself but nothing has gone into smoothing the transitions and making the piece a working whole. Then there is the problem with everyone using the same terms "Giver" and "Demon" which the main character and her sister invented; why is the villain using the terms too? Oh, and the "torch" issue - clearly the writer is English but the characters were from Detroit; in America, it's a "flashlight". I nearly quit a few times between the typos and the line editing issues but forced (and it was a hard force) myself to read to the end. The final couple chapters had better transitions, less recaps, but the sticking something in and changing the rules (god-in-the-machine) increased. If this is a sample of the author's work, I don't want to see anything else unless I see an editor's name attached to the byline. (one star)
Heat by A.L. Knorr - Another gem which made me look for more. Solid characters, intriguing premise, and the eleven chapters of this novella end much too soon. (4 stars)
Gypsy Spirit by Andrea Drew - A prequel to the author's Gypsy Medium series. The beginning, middle, and end belonged to three different stories. Pleasant but confusing read. (3 stars)
(Long break - over four months)
Infernal Challenge by Marian Maxwell - Summer hit, four cons and some slush reading for a publisher friend, developed into a very long break. Coming back to pleasure reading, this was my first stop and it was not a pleasure. I would have rejected it as slush because of the simple sentence structure - all the sentences are about the same length and same structure (noun verb noun). Secondly most of the story is an info dump instead of integrated material. I may have liked it more if my editing brain wasn't still on high function, but as it is this is a total miss. (1 star)
Magical Encounters by Ashley Meira - Because I wanted to read something good for me after all the other work, I continued and this time was not disappointed. This one was lively, integrated, complex, complete characters, ongoing action - story and backstory reveal flipping perfectly. Ahh, yeah. In addition, the main character powers and limitations are intriguing and the story itself both a wonderful plot (with advancement of action and characters) and wonderful introducing the world and characters. Part of the author's "Touched by Magic: Dragon" series. Something I am going to mark as interested in based on this short. (5 stars)
In Contract by Carma Haley Shoemaker - Lots of sex, but main character has no agency. (3 stars)
Shadow Initiate by Todd Skaggs - Too convoluted. Some people might enjoy this, but the timeline of events is hard to follow, especially if trying to integrate the prologue. Biggest issue is the two point-of-view characters (which is one too many for a short story), know things and don't share which makes things more even more twisted. I nearly stopped reading a few times but muddled on because it is only a short story. (2 stars)
(Another long break of four or so months)
Demons and Wraiths by L.J. Bushman - Scottish brogue, selkies, kelpies, and monsters invade Washington state in this clear setup for something more. Has an ending for the novella, but leaves you wanting to find out what comes next. I don't see anything in the author's amazon page, so it looks like it is still in the works (2/27/2018). (4 star)
Daughter of the Hunt by Alyx Lonsdale - The first part of a story, the novella is complete in itself. Bounces around a bit - needs a little honing, but a terrific first taste of a fascinating world. (4 star)
Kiss of the Slayer by Crystal Dawn - Ever watch a movie where no one can act? Where the dialog is wooden and the motives completely cardboard? Yeah. Like that. Also in need of proofing "with the joining of their jeans." (genes) I barely managed to complete reading the story. Fixing the story would require more descriptions and more transitions between scenes (things were very jumpy). (1 star)
The Voodoo That You Do by J.L. Hendericks - Solid introduction to a group of singers - "sisters" all adopted by the same mother. Clearly a lead-in to a larger world, but self-contained and stand-alone. (3 star)
Friend or Foe by Monica Corwin - And a bang! for an ending. Not sure where this time twister is leading or following (time twisting being tricky), but the ride totally worth it. The story ends, but begins something more. (5 star)
This review is only for Jane Hinchey's book Shadow Shifter as I have not read any of the other authors books in this set yet. The story takes off with Ben Hoffman A Watcher sent by the Witches Council to find out why Ted McNeil had choked and died when eating one of Kristina Gates special cakes. He is investigating who had the motive and the means to kill him. There are so many people who had the opportunity to carry out this murder you really are trying to work out who really did it. Such a good plot with some romance thrown in and the story line keeps you interested till the last page. A big thank you to Jane Hinchey for the review copy totally loved it. Highly recommend this author and her books.
Jane Hinchey is a very good writer and I saw she contributed a story, so I read it first. It was nicely done, but with more sex than I want in it. However, I don't want sex in any story, so I make allowances. I love stories with magic, mystery, romance or humor in them and this has all of them, so I was very happy with that. The novella offers up plenty of possible candidates for chief villain before finally settling on the killer, and I was somewhat surprised at the ending! I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the anthology as well as anything else written by Jane Hinchey.
Interesting story and cast of otherworldly characters
I received an Advance Reader Copy for Shadow Shifter written by Jane Hinchey, part of the Midnight Magic set and voluntarily reviewed this book. This was a sweet romance intertwined with a whodunnit involving a cupcake, baked and catered by Katrina Gates at a party. The Council, who polices supernaturals, had sent in Watcher Ben Hoffman to investigate the death, now ruled as a murder. As Katrina follows the evidence, she stirs up trouble, exactly as Ben had warned her.
This was a great little read that flowed really nicely through twists and turns and a natural drawing together of two good characters.
Midnight Magic is a collection of stories by various authors. I am reviewing the short story by Ashley Meira entitled Magical Encounters. This short story is a prequel to her Magic: Dragon Touched series that tells of how Sophia met Symeon. I found this story to be quite humorous and a very good introduction to the series. My rating is based on this story alone.
I really enjoyed this compilation... My favorite author was Ashley Meira. My only negative comment is to the editing. Many of the books had mistakes that took away from my immersion in the storyline. Overall this collection of books was fun to read
I enjoyed reading all the different authors included in Midnight Magic. Each one was superbly written and very enjoyable. I would recommend anyone to purchase this exciting urban fantasy.
This review is in respect of Shadow Shifter by Jane Hinchey. I received an Advance Reader's Copy of Shadow Shifter from Jane Hinchey but this review is my own opinion and is not influenced by the author. I liked the story which featured a witch initially accused of murder and a Watcher (paranormal policeman). Kristina and Ben investigate the murder in this quick read. It was fast and fun and could have been made into a full length novel as everything happened very quickly but it made a nice change to read a novella that worked well with no padding. If Jane made this into a series, I would definitely read it.
Lots of short stories to read and most of them are pretty good. Seems like all of these anthologies have the same kind of grammatical errors, sometimes only in a few stories.
My review is for The Voodoo That You Do story written by JL Hendricks. This is a quick little novella but has a lot going on in it. I wasn't ready for it to end....good thing, because it's only the beginning. The Voodoo Dolls are an all girl band that lives and performs around New Orleans Louisiana. Voodoo dolls are just some little tourist items that they sell to supplement their music income. What would you think if I told you Voodoo was real? Would you be afraid? Be afraid. Be very afraid! I received a complimentary advance readers copy of this story and I chose voluntarily to leave this review so I could help other like minded individuals find a great book.
My review is for Shadow Shifter by Jane Hinchey. Kristina is a witch who likes to make special desserts. She infuses them with a little magic that helps people. Like love and acceptance, confidence, good luck, or inspiration. When a man is poisoned after eating one of her cupcakes, she is determined to prove her innocence 9and the innocence of her cupcake). When the Council gets involved and sends a Watcher to investigate, things get a little weird. First, Kristin's cat, Velma, likes Ben. Her cat doesn't like anyone. Second, she likes him and he appears to like her. But, he doesn't like her interfering in his investigation. Can these two find the murderer before he finds them? And why are people acting so weird?
Loved Jane Hinchey's Shadow Shifter this Novella alone makes purchasing this set totally work the cost. Full of surprises, laughs and love. Witches and a magical bakery, murder, and mayhem are in the works. Buy this and enjoy a group of fantastic authors doing the best of paranormal novels.
Kristina lands in the middle of a murder investigation done by non-other than Ben “the watcher” (a hunk who is totally swoon worthy) With twists and turns you get to from start to the end. Really sweet and short story
I received an ARC and I am leaving a voluntary review, everything I write is my own opinion.
Overall this set gets 3.5 stars. If you love magic and fantasy, this is a set of stories you have to get! Add in some diverse writers (Jane Hinchey and Crystal Dawn to name two) and it gets even better. The variety of authors and storylines will keep you riveted for hours. I even found a couple of new authors (new to me anyways) that I want to read more from. These stories are short quick reads. Perfect for lunch or a break from work. Some violence and jot and steamy scenes so 18+.
REVIEW FOR SHADOW SHIFTER BY JANE HINCHEY 4 stars. This book is a standalone with no cliffhanger and has an HEA. The book blurb adequately describes the storyline so I'm not going to repeat all of that info here. While at first glance, this seems like a quick predictable read. But is filled with twists and turns that will keep you guessing.
Disclosure: I am voluntarily reviewing an ARC of Shadow Shifter by Jane Hinchey, one of the books in this set. This is a story where paranormal professional investigator/Ben meets paranormal amateur sleuth/Kristina after a murder occurs and Kristina is implicated. The story line is interesting, and the characters likable. There are secrets, danger, surprises, attraction, love, and an HEA. A good read!
So I've only just started to read this book so I'll keep you updated as I go. I've read Jane Hinchey's Shadow Shifter story it's a great quick read that I think if she wanted to could turn it into a full novel or even a series. The story is about a girl who owns a cake shop and caters an afternoon tea and a guest dies. It's basically a murder mystery with a supernatural twist. And of course a HEA.
Midnight Magic: An Urban Fantasy Novella Collection by various authors is a collection of Fantasy novellas
Midnight Magic is a collection of 16 novellas by various authors but this review will focus on Shadow Shifter by Jane Hinchey. Kristina is a beautiful witch who infuses spells into the pastries at her popular bakery Jam. Kristina recently catered the dessert buffet at a high society party where guest Ted McNeil choked to death on one of her cupcakes. Accidents happen, right? Kristina gets a visit from gorgeous Ben Hoffman, a Watcher from the Council, who's investigating the poisoning death of Ted McNeil. Kristina and Ben start spending a lot of time together as a result of the investigation, and their attraction grows into something more. But the investigation seems to be going in circles, as more questions crop up with each suspect that's interviewed. Feeling the heat, Ted's murderer kidnaps Kristina when Ben gets called away on a case. Will Ben be able to save Kristina before it's too late?
Shadow Shifter has humour, action, suspense and romance. Jane Hinchey has paired an intriguing storyline and lovable characters for an exciting page-turner. I highly recommend this book.
I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book
Gypsy Spirit by Andrea Drew is a charming, modern fairy tale with one of the most lovable characters I have followed in some time. A very lovely adventure to enjoy!
I purchased this boxed set for the variety of 16 stories it included. Below is a review of one of them by a favorite author of mine. The rest of the selections are also great reads, so you won't want to miss this set!
<<< Review of Shadow Shifter by Jane Hinchey <<< Kristina was baking in her kitchen, talking to her cat, when the doorbell rang. A gorgeous man stood there. Unfortunately, Ben was a Watcher investigating Ted McNeil’s death from one of the cupcakes she had baked for a party she had catered. Because the victim died of poison and not choking as assumed, the Watcher had to investigate and Kristina was on the suspect list. He was actually trying to clear her name. But Kristina was not willing to sit idly by and have her reputation ruined. Already several catering customers had cancelled on her! So despite repeated warnings by Ben to let him handle it, she plunged in and investigated on her own.
Kristina returned home after a busy day of baking cookies for her store. She had eliminated several suspects through her questioning. As she put her key in the door, a dark figure shoved her out of the way and ran. Her kitchen was in shambles! She phoned Ben and he took her to the hospital since she struck her head on the driveway when she was pushed. The next day, partially to keep her safe, Ben took her along while he questioned a few more suspects. What were the clues pointing to? Would they be able to find out the truth of this cupcake murder before someone else gets killed?
The author’s writing was outstanding! The story line moved briskly along, and the characters were very likable. The twists and turns kept the reader constantly guessing at what would happen next. This was a delightful story and I highly recommend it, as well as other excellent selections in the box set! It is well worth the purchase!!!
This is an absolutely "magical" set of fantasy stories brought to us by some of the top writers in this genre A few I was already a fan of (Hinchey, Dawn, Lawson) and a few -I am now definitely going to be adding to my stalker list :) Collections like this are definitely the way to go when you are looking for something new - Unsure about an author's writing style, or if a series is going to be right for you - Don't want to waste the 4.99 just to find out 5 chapters later it just wasn't what you thought? Then this is a perfect time - Jump in - Get your feet wet - and just maybe find your next perfectly matched mystical journey - "I received an ARC at no cost from the author."
*previously received an ARC copy and later bought one because I liked it so much*
I read Jane Hinchey's Shadow Shifter first and I am so psyched for this collection of fantasy reads. I was totally entertained, loving all the characters, the plot, the suspense and 'let's solve a crime!' vibe. Flowing style and consistent, hot and definitely something I wanna see more of!
GREAT collection of stories, my favorite, however, was Andrea Drew's "GYPSY SPIRIT" as I have read her entire Gypsy series and this was a wonderful little glimpse of Gypsy's beginning. .. Felt like I was visiting a friend. I hope she puts pen to paper for more visits to the past. That said, this book is a mishmash of lots of writers to sample, and simply great for a quick read here or there.
I got this as an ARC for my honest opinion and review. It was a great series of Novellas. Well worth the read. I can't wait to read more by some of these authors. I love getting box sets. Opens my eyes to new authors all the time. I really enjoyed Jane Hinchey's Shadow Shifter. Several of the stories were very will written.
