More than an exhibition catalog of Michelangelo’s drawings, this beautiful oversized book is an illustrated guide to his sculptures, paintings and architectural achievements through the insight provided by analysis of his drawings. While any piece of paper touched by the master is of interest to scholars, the highly refined drawings Michelangelo prepared for close friends that appear in Chapter 5 are spectacular in their expression and virtuosity. I also enjoyed the last essay on Michelangelo’s close friendship with Tommaso de’ Cavalieri, which nicely. clarifies the exact nature of their relationship.
