This was a fun, fast read, perfect for tweens who are addicted to YouTube videos. Olivia's age is never mentioned in the book, but she feels about thirteen. She's recently changed schools and wants more than anything to find a new group of friends. With the end-of-year class trip to New York (the book is set in England) looming and her parents unable to afford to send her, Olivia's sure she can raise enough money through creating a vibrant and viral vlogger personality. The only problem is that when she tries to record her own video, she's a little less than impressed at the result. So she enlists the popular wannabe actress in her class to play Destiny, the perfect "vlogger" Olivia's created. With Olivia writing the scripts and Emma bringing the onscreen talent, Destiny rises to vlogging stardom faster than Olivia expected. But when a boy in their class figures out what they're up to and fans start recognizing Emma as Destiny, Olivia worries they won't be able to keep up the charade long enough to raise enough money for Olivia to go to New York.
The Vlogger Diaries was a lighthearted look at what it takes to be true to yourself. I especially loved the diary format and the humor. Recommended for kids who love YouTube, might be dealing with some friendship drama, or who just want a fun and entertaining read.
Okay, I am a sucker for anything with the words "journal" or "diary" in the title. In fact, this is how I discovered Bridget Jones' Diary.
The Vlogger Diaries is aimed at a middle grade audience, which, at first was a bit disappointing, as I was expecting NOT that. My fault for not reading the blurb of the book.
Nonetheless, once I started reading this book, I actually enjoyed it. Granted, it was a very fast read, but the word that comes to mind to describe it is "cute".
Our main character Olivia is trying to fit in at her new school and decides a vlog is the way to go. Except she doesn't want to be the face of the vlog so she enlists the help of her school friends (sort of) Emma and Gale.
What follows are diary entries from Olivia representing the vlog episodes, comments, along with some of Olivia's own thoughts and day to day issues. Actually, this book is interesting because there are a few messages behind the story. 1) beware of social media, it can bite you in the derriere at any time. 2) making friends can be done in the strangest ways. 3) lying to people, even those you don't know, can be destructive. 4) Turn the other cheek.
I like the writing and there is nothing remotely shocking in this book. As I mentioned, perfect for middle grade.
Emma the new girl gets taken in by Olivia paying her to be the face of her YouTube channel as Olivia needs to make money to afford the school New York trip.
Between the girls they want the Destiny channel to be a success while Emma hopes Olivia will be so grateful she'll allow her to join her group at school called the Swans a popular friendship group everyone envies.
It was a fun read as she faces being outed by a boy at her school and humiliated in front of an audience. It was full of drama and friendship faux pas. All about learning to be confident and happily you had never been more important or needed in Olivia's case!
Not a bad book, definitely aimed towards tweens or early teenagers. I felt like it wasn't very intriguing as it had nothing special to keep the reader hooked. Some parts of the book were not realistic; for instance, the rapid gain of subscribers the main character was gaining in such a short amount of time, but this is to be expected as it's a fictional book about an 'internet sensation'. However, this book was very creative and original; a very good read and relatable to the 21st century. It's a quick and easy read and I would recommend it to any tween/teen getting into reading.
This book will be of high interest to intermediate elementary and middle schoolers who are preparing to enter social media. Readers learn that gaining internet notoriety has its downfalls, especially if it happens under false pretenses. Destiny is a likable character and the book is written in journal format.
The design of the story is cute. Its like a little doodle over some pages. That is a plus point. Overall, it was fine. Teen will always be teens. The story was quite accurate at some point..the millennials. Being a celebrity is not easy. I know some youtubers always stress themselves out due to brain storming over what content they should record and upload and whether or not viewers likes it or not. Truth be told in this book.
This book really reflected on the idea of false identities online and it made me feel like I really am not the most awkward tween on earth.perfect for tweens. even though it was a bit simple, the author really made this a great book.not too complicated not too simple.
Fun to read children's book about running a vlog. Nice illustrations as well. Reminded me of the Molly Moon books and the Princess Diaries, though this story is much shorter and not as deep.
Amoooo!
