Nicki Styx #3

You're the One That I Haunt

Rate this book
The devil went down to Georgia . . .

Nicki Styx has always known that the devil's in the details—but does he have to move in next door, too? Worse, he won't take no for an answer. Nicki would never leave her beloved boyfriend, ER doc Joe Bascombe, but hell hath no fury like a devil scorned. He's determined to make Nicki's life a living hell—even if it means exposing Nicki as an unwilling ghoulfriend to the dead.

Now, just when she was getting used to being able to see and hear—and help—spirits, Nicki's got a whole new set of problems. With ghosts descending from all sides, the bereaved knocking down her door, and Joe trying to take things to the next level, Nicki may finally be in over her head. It would be so easy to dance with the devil . . . but if Nicki crosses over to the dark side, she may never leave.

Third in the Nikki Styx series. She's kinda fun, though I still think her disdain of the paranormal makes no logical sense considering she's so involved with helping dead souls and Satan himself follows her around all the time. So Nikki, really? You're rolling your eyes at protection spells?

The whole deal with the devil following her everywhere got old. I wanted more Nikki helping lost souls, less Nikki wanting to get in the Devil's pants. Anyway! This storyline did pick up a bit at the end.

Does anyone else find the stereotyping of the black characters in this book offensive? I'm white and I've been cringing.

I hope the next book is more involved with lost souls, maybe some new characters. I did buy this set so I'm reading all of them. In case you wondered why I keep plugging away at them.

Is it so wrong of me that I want Nicki to embrace her dark side? Anything to keep reading about the delicious Sammy.

Garey's Nicki Styx series keeps the surprises and the tension rolling. This time, Sammy has moved in just next door and is making his tempting presence known in all sorts of ways. Include romantic drama, some Wiccan southern belles, and some possession by spirits and You're the One That I Haunt is another winner.

The only problem now is that as sweet as Joe Bascombe is, the Devil is just so much more fun. I'm anxious to read the next one!

This is the second book in the series, and though I didn't read the first book, the new reader gets caught up quickly as there's not a complex series arc. The book was really good, with some suspense and creepy stuff without being dark or gory. There's a gay friend/business partner and his love life for humor, a sexy devil for temptation, and the love relationship for romance. Everything you need for a paranormal reading fix!

After a near death experience six months ago, Nicki Styx “came back” with the ability to see and talk to ghosts. So far she’s dealt fairly well with helping these spirits find the Light and move on. Her vintage clothing store, Handbags and Gladrags is thriving, thanks to her partner and best friend, Evan. And she’s enjoying her relationship with the handsome Dr. Joe Bascombe, the ER doctor who quite literally brought her back to life. Then it all goes to hell when the Devil—yes, that one—moves in next door.

Sammy Divine is the current owner of Divinyls, the indie music store across the street from Nicki’s shop. Everyone else may think he’s just a very hot blonde, blue-eyed hunk, but Nicki knows all too well who and what he really is and why he’s set up shop in her neighborhood. Sammy wants Nicki, but a date with the Devil is not her idea of a good time. But Sammy won’t take no for an answer, and the Devil doesn’t mind playing dirty. He’ll use any means necessary, even using the one Nicki loves most.

Joe meets Nicki for coffee after a particularly trying night in the ER. While they are talking, Crystal, the ghost of a patient Joe lost in the ER, shows up and is she ever pissed! She blames Joe for her death and won’t leave Nicki alone until Joe admits he’s at fault. Turns out that Crystal was bulimic and as a result of her condition, her heart stopped and she could not be resuscitated. During all the brouhaha, Sammy shows up and conveniently has a cameraman with him to film a “commercial” for Divinyls. Instead, Crystal takes that moment to possess Nicki, who starts spewing all manner of heinous accusations about Joe causing Crystal’s death. As if that wasn’t enough, she tells everyone she can talk to dead people and that they should come see her if they want to contact their deceased loved ones.

After Sammy’s stunt, Joe is under investigation at the hospital, Nicki is bombarded by every wacko in a 100 mile radius, and Crystal just won’t go away. The Devil doesn’t play fair and Nicki is learning that the hard way. But she’s tougher than Sammy bargained for and when love is on the line, all bets are off!

I have enjoyed this series since the beginning. Nicki never fails to make me laugh. She would be so much fun to hang out with—never a dull moment with someone who “sees dead people!” You’re The One That I Haunt is the third book in the Nicki Styx series. While there is a bit of back story, it’s much better—and more fun—to read the series in order: Dead Girls Are Easy, which won a RITA and A Match Made In Hell. If you’re looking for a little something to chase away the winter doldrums, take a walk on the wild side with Nicki Styx.

This series continues with a terrific third installment. Nicki Styx, one who has "seen the light" and returned to find she also sees the dead - who have issues to resolve just like the rest of us. Nicki's life seems to be in order, now; her relationship with ER doc, Joe, has passed the 6-month record mark and he is as understanding as a boyfriend can be of her ghostly projects and her temptation by Sammy, owner of Divinyls and the Devil in real life. Sammy wants Nicki's body & soul, and his personna is one she finds hard to resist; the goth child Nicki has a thing for bad boys in Billy Idol leathers and a sneer. Nicki's project in this book is Crystal, a recently dead teen who died from anorexia/bulimia-created health issues stemming from a sexual assult. Her mom never believed that her holy roller preacher boyfriend could have sexually assulted Crystal; the problem is Crystal's 12 yr. old sister is still unprotected. Crystal is quite a character, a mean and spiteful child, yet Nicki eventually sees inside her. Sammy continues to be temptation personified while using Crystal to try and get to Nicki.

The action seemed less in this novel than previous ones, but the emotions ran higher which more than made up for it. I loved reading about the unusual relationships between Nicki and her recently discovered twin sister (who was married to Joe earlier!) and her transvestite grandmother (?) Bijou; Nicki is learning throughout this series, especially how to love and let people into her life and heart. Terri Garey has done a very credible job taking the wild child Nicki into adulthood but without sacrificing what made Nicki special in the first place. I've complained, along with others on GR, about characters not maturing over a series but Ms. Garey is conscious of Nicki's personal growth over time; kinda like how teenagers don't stay obnoxious forever . . . .

You’re the One that I Haunt is the third installment in the Nicki Styx series, and it’s my favorite so far. Can I just say that I love Sammy? And this book has plenty of Sammy. I love how we get to know more about him as a person(?) and I can definitely understand Nicki’s attraction towards him, because at certain points I find myself rooting for him over Joe. Most of the time, actually. Ok, all of the time.

Kelly lives in Savannah full time, which is great because Kelly is a pain in the butt. So interaction with her is minimal.

I loved that there was a little witchcraft in this one, especially how there seems to be some difference in opinions among Sparrow Star (whatever her name was, too lazy to go downstairs and check) and the rest of her coven.

Loved the Savannah Garden club!

I enjoyed Crystal’s story, but Crystal herself was pretty annoying. I found myself rolling my eyes at her quite often.

The one thing that really bugged me was that

This was much better than the last one....

We didn't have to deal with Kelly (Nikki's twin sister)

The Devil is back, but we get to hear his side of the story

There is a child molesting preacher (who is dealt with in a most interesting manner) and the ghost of the recently dead anorexic/bulimic young woman that she became

Joe (Nikki's) E.R. doctor boyfriend has been suspended and the hospital's attorney is making a play for him

And Bijou (Nikki's grandmother/father) is in town with her coven of Savannah belles to help Nikki with the other bad stuff that's floating around.

Nicki Styx is haunted by a vengeful ghost (Crystal) who died in the ER where Nicki's boyfriend Joe is a doctor. Satan (Sammy) has the hots for Nicki and has opened a store across the street from Nicki's own shop. (Yes this really is Satan himself.) Sammy is using Crystal to torment Nicki and Joe in order to turn Nicki to the Dark side. This is a fun jaunt with lots of twists and turns that keep you turning the pages faster and faster. A quick read with all the fun characters from the previous two books in the series.

This was my least favorite in the series. It got a tad cheesy at times. For a regular old human Joe is the best though. Nicki & Joe are put to the test in this one and Joe really comes through. Sammy aka the devil is still after Nicki and he doesn't pull out the stops in this book. It ends almost like a final book, everything comes together pretty well. From my understanding the next book is the last so I'm not sure where Ms. Garvey can go from here.

I really enjoy this writer - her characters are witty and interesting and she comes up with some pretty cool storylines. I would recommend this book if you like paranormal/comedic stories. This is the third book in her series so I recommend reading these books in order. I really enjoyed the first one, liked the second and really enjoyed the third one.

Another excellent entry in the Nicki Styx series. Satan has set up shop in Atlanta the better to bedevil Nicki with. He'll try anything to tempt her over to the dark side. If you want to find out if he succeeds, you'd better pick up this book! You won't regret it.

Creepiest line I have ever read "Day for you, night for me" says the ghost tormenting Nikki. It was very well written. I did not fall in love with the concept as a series but the first one is worth the read.

Still not as strong as book 1, but not bad.

I still can't get over describing a man's testicles as "tender little sacs of vulnerability, so readily filled with man juice" though.

That was...unique

Nicki is dismayed when the devil opens a record store across the street from her shop, Handbags and Gladrags. It seems that Samael, or Sammy as she calls him, hasn't given up on luring her to the dark side. Nicki finds him tempting indeed, but she's given her defective heart to Joe, the doctor who brought her back to life. Sammy won't go away quietly, however. He sends the angry spirit of a newly deceased girl, Crystal, to torment both Nicki and Joe, and he causes Nicki to inadvertently out herself on video as being able to speak to the dead. Now she has people coming to her, wanting her to channel the spirits of their loved ones. In addition, she's come to the attention of the local coven. When they invite Nicki to join their ranks, she angers their leader by turning them down. Nicki gets cursed as a result, and now her life is really going to hell.

Two words: Stupid. Slut.

Never mind Nicki's defective heart; the bitch needs a spine. I just cannot with her and Sammy. She knows he's bad news (he's the freaking devil, ffs!), but whenever he comes around, Nicki can barely keep her tongue in her mouth or her clothes on her body. Imagine me in high falsetto saying, 'I know he's evil, but he's so dreeeeeeeeamy!' Not that Nicki said that, but that's the impression I got. I mean, I've seen guys so attractive before that I nearly gave myself whiplash doing a double take, but if one of them was deliberately trying to ruin my life, sabotage my boyfriend's career, and destroy our relationship, that attraction would fizzle out in a heartbeat. Guh. Enough said.

I won't be seeking out any more in this series, unless I can get them cheap as an ebook or at a second hand shop. Not worth the full price of admission. I read for entertainment, and when I find a book far more annoying than entertaining, it doesn't get a high score. Giving this book a two.

Still really digging this series. Its a quick fun read.

My one major issue with this book - and honestly this series in general - is that there is a LOT of body shaming in it. That aspect has not aged well.

Ehi Tesoro! Che ci fai qui? -

è la lussuria a guidare i miei passi.”
Abbassando lo sguardo sui suoi pantaloni aggiunse:
“Anche in questo momento.” Mi rifiutavo di guardare,
non ne avevo proprio l’intenzione! Che mi bruciassero i
bulbi oculari, piuttosto.

nicki berusaha mencari simpati crystal.
jadilah nicki mencari tau ttg keluar crystal.

tapi bagaimana caranya membuka kedok si pria agar mau mengakui kejahatannya???

br kasar dikit lalu nicki terluka eh jadi mlempem.
ah sammy, aq jadi jatuh cinta padamu.........

Nicki Styx, the girl who sees dead people, is back and better then ever in this third installment. You’re the One That I Haunt is another fun read that you won’t be able to put down. Chuck full of romance, suspense and chaos with a clever, witty, fast paced and exciting plot, you will be falling in love with Nicki Styx and company all over again. Garey brings such laugh out load humor to what could be a dark story.

Nicki is learning to adjust and live with her “knack” while her relationship with Joe grows and becomes more serious. And there is a long awaited love scene *squee*, I won’t spoil it for you though! Joe is looking for a bigger commitment from Nicki and she has to work through a few personal issues that she has been struggling with since the beginning of the series. There are some bumps along the road, as is to be expected, but Nicki seems to mature a lot in this book. Good for her!

Sammy Devine is back and hotter then ever! He is stepping up his game to seduce Nicki and bring her over to the dark side. Temptation has never been so hard to resist, you almost want Nicki to slip up! Or maybe that’s just me and my love for bad boys, *mmm…* Trying to get Joe out of the picture Sammy makes a deal with newly deceased Crystal, an anorexic teen, who passes away on the way to the E.R. and who Joe ultimately has to pronounce dead on arrival. She blames Joe for her death and is out to make his & Nicki’s life a living hell with her vengeance. With a very troubled and disturbing past this may just be one ghost that Nicki can’t handle. Then when a coven of witches shows up at Handbags and Gladrags Nicki must lean on her “Grandmother” Bijou and her group of Savannah Garden Club members for help.

Nicki’s sister Kelly, who I don’t much care for as stated in previous reviews, has limited “air time” but is very supporting of Nicki. You can see that they’re relationship has strengthen over the last few months. And Evan and Butch have a strong story line that is touching and entertaining.

♥♥♥♥ - Really Liked It

Another great read from author Terri Garey, they just keep getting better and better!

Wow, what a turnaround! After two semi-okay reads, I finally find the Nicki Styx book that really rocked my world. YOU’RE THE ONE THAT I HAUNT was amazing….I found myself falling for temptation.

Finally back home from Savannah, Nicki faces the Devil right across the street. Sammy pulls no stops trying to temp Nicki to the dark side, even going as far as threatening Joe’s career with the help of a young angry spirit.

Crystal Cowart’s death isn’t Joe’s fault, but this angry spirit is out to make his life a living hell, with help from Sammy. Through possessions, Nicki is filmed (by Sammy) claiming Joe killed Crystal. Thus an investigation begins on Joe, threatening the career he’s worked so hard for.

But where Joe and Nicki’s relationship was weak at in A MATCH MADE IN HELL, they made up for in YOU’RE THE ONE THAT I HAUNT, for these two were finally solid in their feelings and relationship and were able to make it through fairly unscratched.

Sammy, man it was hard to hate him. He was what the word temptation is all about. One moment he was all scorching and typical devil evilness and then the next appearance he showed Nicki where he came from and the unfairness of his fate. There were some seriously tender moments where it was hard for Nicki to keep her resolve, but she kept her love for Joe up front in her mind.

The plot with Crystal was a good one. Much better than the previous two, I think. It didn’t get all complicated and blown out of proportions. Crystal suffered abuse at the hands of the family minister, but with a relationship with him, her mom wouldn’t believe her. Now, Crystal fears for her younger sister being forced to endure the same treatment. Unable to move on Sammy gets his darkness and lies into her and it’s up to Nicki to get her into the light.

Overall, the best book so far of the series. I enjoyed the down to earth plot (with minimal interference from Bijou), the relationship with Joe finally felt like it went somewhere and Sammy’s involvement really created a ‘on your toes’ atmosphere.
