When an abduction by cartel members along the Arizona border goes horribly wrong, Mitch Kearns is pulled away from his family ranch near Tucson to help track down the suspects. When it’s discovered that the captive is a high-level U.S. government official who holds the key to unlock codes for the Southwest power grid, Mitch and Dev are in a race against time to prevent a catastrophe from unfolding as they battle rival cartel members who each have their own stake in the game.
This action packed KU library read could have been ripped from the daily news a few years back, when border wars were news. Mitch and Dev are visiting his relatives in southern Arizona on the Kearn Ranch, where he was raised after his parent's deaths. But things have changed drastically since he left for the military, or even since he last visited to help with a cattle roundup. Two cartel rivals are at war, a DEA agent is trying to go back in undercover, a northern militia group is "helping" patrol the border, and it's hard to tell the good guys from the bad. When a neighbor is abducted and held captive, Mitch and Dev will need to pull from their advanced training to wade through the players and try to get him back alive. This is a captivating read.
This is another short volume, but don't mistake it for something simple and uncomplicated. This is anything but. It starts out in the distant past when Mitch was a teen living on his uncle's ranch. After that, it skips to Mitch's present. He and Dev are visiting the ranch. He's trying to give her a picture of his earlier life and why he is the way he is. They climb in the jeep and he drives her around the desert that he loved so much. We also get let in on the drug cartel that operated in that area and the guy running it. We get introduced to the wife who handles all the logistics for the cartel. Naturally, Mitch and Dev intersect with the cartel. Not a simple plot at all. The flavor of the desert comes through the writing. So does the ruthlessness of the cartel.
Mitch & Dev visit the Kearns ranch in southern Arizona. While there, a wanna be Mexican Drug Lord arranges the abduction of the youngest son of a neighboring rancher, who also happens to be the younger brother of Mitch’s high school girlfriend. All of Mitch’s skills come into play to secure the release of his friend’s brother.
If one lives close to a border town of Mexico, this book brings the truth of what it really is like. They have the cartels, the runners, the coyotes, and their own border lines. A.vacation for Mitch and Dev while at his Uncle ranch, brought his Special Force training to be used when a neighbor’s boy is kidnap. A great fast action story that readers will enjoy.
