Have you ever seen someone standing on the side of the highway with his thumb held out, and stopped to pick him up? They call that form of procuring a ride from another hitchhiking and say that it’s a detriment to our highway systems and an unsafe practice that could lead to physical harm for those who do it as well as for those who stop to give them a ride.
Have you ever been repulsed at the sight of an animal’s flattened body lying on the highway? They call that roadkill and say animal deaths on our highways could be prevented if we all would just slow down and pay closer attention to our surroundings.
Have you ever felt a knot tighten in your stomach as you read a newspaper story about a tragic automobile crash in which people’s lives were lost? They call that an accident and say human deaths on our highways could be prevented if we would all just slow down and pay closer attention to our surroundings.
People accidentally kill animals and people in great numbers daily on our nation’s highways and there are many plans in place to help prevent that from repeating.
But what if someone kills another on purpose? Is there a plan to prevent that from happening? They call that murder and there’s no prevention for it. There’s no way to know what might cause someone to kill someone else, but even murder can be accidental.
Then there are serial killers; violent offenders such as rapists and other sexually motivated murderers who typically select victims at random and repeat those actions using a similar mode of operandi.
Have you ever considered that roadkill might be any death on our highways whether animal or human and whether or not it’s accidental or purposeful?
And if there were a serial killer who traveled the highways looking for his or her next victim, would they call that roadkill as well?
