I'm on the roll here... I don't really know what to tag/shelf these manga "books" I've been reading, so I just tag them as I normally would a book. This manga, Sayonara Game, was quite cute. It didn't have much of sexy times (only the end, really), but it worked for the manga somehow. The two main characters, Itou Yousuke and Senpai Arimura ‘Aniki’ (?) Ikou was adorable. Arimura straight, while Itou has always had a huge crush on Arimura since they went to school together. Once they start "spending time together", Arimura thinks Itou is so cute and tries to understand his feelings towards a man.

That being said, I wanted more depth, but it was cute. I also wanted to get more depth to Itou in that sense that he's very shy and struggles to express himself. I wish we had gotten to see him develop a little more, if that makes sense. I had hoped seeing become more certain of himself in the relationship. I also wish he had gotten to see/be told how different Arimura is with him compared to everyone else he's dated. With Itou, he's more possessive and protective and I love that, and I wish we had gotten way more of that.

Quick basic facts:
Genre: - (Adult) (Yaoi) Manga (M/M).
Series: - Series, Book One.
Love triangle? -
Cheating? -
HEA? -
Favorite character? - Arimura Ikou.
Would I read more by this author/or of series? - I'll check things out.
Would I recommend this book/series? -Yes.
Will I read this again in the future? - Most likely not...
Rating - 3.5 stars.

honestly, everytime I need a bl/yaoi to remind me not all yaois are full of smut and plotless I read my favorites.
and this one is one of them. I just love it for multiple reasons : consent, no pushy seme or uke, communication, a bit of drama that moves me.. etc

This is so much fun, I didn't expect to like it this much. Even though the story is pretty light, I love it because the strong angst adds a lot of depth to the conflict.

And Itou-kun is such a sweetheart, we have to protect him together, don't let senpai hurt him!!! Ah, when the story gets to the part where the main characters openly confess their feelings, it's so touching! I think it's the first time I've cried at a scene like that.

Ah, it's so cute and interesting to follow. I can't wait to read the next volume.

This was a cute BL manga, but that's kind of all it was too me. I thought the concept was nice, and I was fine with the character archtypes being used that defined Arimura and Yuske, but I didn't feel like I saw their relationship or characters develop. It felt like they were going from point A to point E to point K to point... the entire time. Their change in character and feelings didn't feel natural but that we were being told something about them or how they felt changed just to progress their story.

I did however really like the artwork done here, I thought they look gred and I loved the small and big scenes it emphasized. It was that artwork that helped capture substance of Arimura and Yuske's relationship.

Despite my critiques at the start, I'm still looking forward to reading more from this author. I had a nice time reading it and enjoyed what the story had to offer. The author seems to have a wide range of BL manga they've written which im sure I'll find the same enjoyment from.

3.5 rounded up for Yosuke's intense cuteness. I'm not sure why "BL stories where the guys are baseball players" is a thing, but I'm okay with it.

I enjoyed following along as Ikuo and Yosuke made their individual and combined journeys to the happy-for-now ending. I appreciated that although Yosuke was reserved and easily embarrassed, he wasn't timid or a pushover, he didn't fall prey to the conventions of those traits. He had no problem speaking his mind or setting boundaries. And while Ikuo was gregarious and often oblivious, he didn't get stuck in a cycle of complacency thinking that everything will be fine if he doesn't rock the boat. Although, in the story Ikuo was labeled a people-pleaser, I disagree. Completely. That may have been what the author intended or something lost in translation (more on that later), but that's not at all how he acted.

To me it seemed that he was a problem solver with a more practical than emotional bent. I know it seems contradictory to say someone is both oblivious and a problem solver, but people are complex. If he wasn't fully invested in something he subconsciously took actions that would distance him from the situation--actions he didn't fully understand himself. Ikou was actively invested in the outcome of his projects at work and his sister's education, so he committed himself to seeing them improve. And in the flashbacks to their baseball club days, despite what it meant to Yosuke, Ikuo's interference with the bullying was not an act of sympathy or an attempt to please anyone; it was about keeping everyone focused on their goal of making it to Koshien and stomping out anything that distracted from that. I think that because he is a kind person at heart, his methods make it look like he's trying to make everyone happy, but in truth, whether or not anyone is pleased by his actions is almost incidental. Even if he doesn't realize it, he aims to placate people so they'll fall in line or not throw a wrench in his plans, whatever they may be.

Ikuo and Yosuke were both stymied by their narrow expectations and assumptions, but those motivations guided their actions in different ways. Yosuke never believed that there was a chance for them to be in a romantic relationship. He convinced himself early on that he didn't want anything from Ikuo and just being around him was enough even though most of his thoughts reeked of a desire for more. He needed to be shown through the actions of someone else what it meant to own your feelings.

For Ikuo's part, he didn't understand the difference between being a partner and adopting the actions and mannerisms of one. He applied a one-size-fits-all approach to all his intimate relationships and did what he thought was expected of him. Doing so meant that it didn't matter who was on the receiving end of his gestures and that's why the relationships never lasted. And he didn't change his methods for Yosuke, at first. When he didn't get the reaction he was expecting, he assumed it was because Yosuke was a guy. And like Yosuke, it took a little outside perspective for him to realize it had nothing to do with that.

It is because they both went through several stages of revelation that when they finally get together it feels real and earned. So, good story all around.

Now, about the translation. I may as well howl at the moon for all that anyone is going to hear me, but I really wish they would keep honorifics in manga, particularly in stories where hierarchy plays a big part in the relationship dynamics. For those situations, I can always tell where it was removed because either the translation is awkward or the scene lacks something because the tension between the characters underscored by that hierarchy seems misplaced without it. Just leave them in.

Between that and the subpar editing, I don't know which was worse. The manuscript looks like it didn't pass through the hands of a line editor or a copy editor. Even if the honorifics are excluded, there are better ways the appearances of "Mr." and "sir" could have been finessed. Also, why use "senpai" as a qualifier for why an order should be followed but not as the honorific that supports the privilege behind that order? Why allow -chan but no other honorifics? And why did Nana call her brother Arimura throughout the story? It's their last name. And then you reach the afterword and the author is talking about Ikuo and Yosuke this and Ikuo that. Who is this Ikuo all of a sudden?

The majority of the readers picking up this title have a firm grasp on Japanese honorifics. For those that don't, it should be simple enough to throw a cheat sheet on the page after the table of contents. But don't diminish the story by westernizing it so much that it loses integral elements.

The odd thing is that they know who their audience is and--mums the word--they also know that a significant number of them read unofficial translations. If they didn't there'd be no point in noting in their IG post for this title that it's the prequel to Love Nest, a title that hasn't been released in English yet. But they know that's the main selling point for this title. Sayonara Game and Change World stand on their own, but anyone interested knows that Love Nest is better--one of the best series out there now--and most people, me included, are really waiting for that and letting Yosuke and Ikuo serve as an aperitif before the full course.

But I digress. I know a lot factors into the final product and somethings are restricted by the licensing contracts, but I don't think that's at play here. It just seems like this was a rush job and the narrative is more awkward for it. I hope that they work it out before the rest of the series comes out. I know they can do it because the amount of money I spent on my SuBlime library says so.

I just realized that I never marked this as read, I read this when I was in the hospital at the end of July after my mental break down lol. Maybe not in the best headspace, but I thought this was super enjoyable, and I really loved the building of the relationship. Definitely interested in continuing the series, however, it does seem a little confusing that it changes the title every couple of volumes lol

I thought this was super cute, but it also felt a little... shallow? I wish we could've gotten to know the characters a little bit more than we did. I could believe Yo's love for Arimura since it was a high school crush that just grew and grew, but for Arimura I wish we could've seen more of it. It really just felt like he liked Yosuke because Yosuke liked him and he thought Yosuke was kind of cute and not anything else substantial. The romance didn't feel super believable imo. I did like it either way. Plus there are more books that follow this couple I believe, so I'm looking forward to reading those and liking them more, hopefully.

Who's the best character in this manga and why is it the little sister? Just finished and I'm still not sure I got the chemistry between the love interests until maybe the final third (that being said, it did get cute once they were properly together). I did really like that this was a little more grown up than just highschool, and I thought the way they had to navigate around late work schedules and socialising with other people in order to spend time with each other was very realistic.

Definitely a fun read and worth your time, but if you're here for pure romance you might find this falls a little on the tropey side.

I’ve always loved the senpai x kouhai trope, and even as I see this one in the context outside of the usual high school setting it’s still wonderful. Arimura and Yosuke are complete opposites that end up meshing spectacularly well once they finally understand their feelings for one another.

It was okay! Story was a bit bland and forgettable, but it's an easy read if you have nothing else to do! Bonus chapters were cute and the smut scenes were gorgeous as well!

Interesting bittersweet story with a happy ending.

I felt like there was too many feelings being one sided, but after the break up there was balance when the other party realised his feelings.

This started off a sweet, if predictable, story and then became something great. There's such honesty in the portrayal of this love and it moved me deeply.

First Read Review (December 29th, 2022):

This manga was pretty cute. David Evelyn's translation did a better job at incorporating modern slang without it feeling cringey or out-of-date; the dialogue felt natural ranging from Arimura's coworker to his younger sister, Nana. Minaduki also successfully uses baseball analogies rather than make it a backdrop when it came to the romance. Seeing the full extent of Yosuke's first year in high school baseball from his perspective helped cement that. Their end game here feels earned since the mangaka was able to use common romance tropes in more mature ways. I also appreciated the analytical angle reciprocal liking played into the plot; it painted this relationship, and even others I've read, in a different light.

The only weaknesses are Minaduki's softer art style isn't as defined as other artists I've read, and I feel like she held back on developing Arimura and Yosuke romantically after the end of Chapter 2. Them being together was sudden and didn't have the impact it should have had. However, Sayonara Game was still an engrossing read, and I'm interested to see where its spin-off, Love Nest (is one of the protagonists that fated college classmate from Change World, the sequel series?) will take me.

When Nana needs academic support, her older brother Arimura asks Yusuke—a quiet former teammate from his high school baseball days—to step in as her tutor. Their unexpected reunion stirs tension and unresolved memories: does Arimura even recall their past connection? For Yusuke, being face-to-face with the vice-captain he once quietly admired is its own emotional trial. Sayonara Game is a heartfelt story that explores the awkwardness of first love and the bittersweet beauty of second chances.

2025 Review
Yeah, this manga isn't very good. The romance is super rushed and the 2 barely even interact. They are apart of the majority of the manga. And when they are together, Yosuke is so in his head that he does nothing. While Arimura just acts like a dick the whole time. It didn't even feel like they were ever together, felt more like Arimura was just playing a prank on Yosuke. I hope the rest of the series is better than this one was.
