Rolling in the Deep is the 2nd book in the very hot Hawaiian Heroes series by Cathryn Cade. This isn't your typical Paranormal romance series. No vampires, werewolves, fae or any of the typical suspects. Just very hot, very sexy Island guardians handpicked and empowered by Pele to guard her Island.

Claire Hunter has come to the beautiful island of Hawaii for her best friend's wedding. When the brother of the groom shows up at the airport to pick her, and her group, up she's blown away by the instant attraction she feels for him. This is perfect! She can have an island fling with this hot native and then go back to her life. She doesn't want forever, just a fling. Unfortunately, convincing Daniel that she can handle all he has to give proves to be more of a challenge than she expects. Convincing her heart that this is just a fling is impossible.

She'd rather fight with Daniel Ho'omalu than get along with anyone else

Daniel Ho'omalu is big, scary, covered in tattoos and very serious about his duties to protect the integrity of his Island. Finding a woman is the last thing on his mind. As a matter of fact, because of a bad experience many years before, he doesn't date or sleep around. The instant zing of attraction he feels when he comes face to face with Claire is not at all what he wants. Keeping his distance from her is a constant challenge that he's not sure he is up for, but giving in would be worse. She's sweet, soft and beautiful. How could he trust that she can handle it the way he likes it? Hard, hot and a bit rough is what he needs. Can he trust that she is his match in every way?

I really felt for Daniel and his fear to trust. For a man to be falsely accused of sexual assault and then have his name drug through the courts would be traumatizing for anyone. But, to ever trust again would be almost impossible. The dedication Claire shows in trying to show Daniel she can be trusted is beautiful and heartbreaking all at the same time.

This series is well worth the read. You'll enjoy every word, sentence and paragraph.

Wow! This book was fantastic. It is the second book in the Hawaiian Heroes series and did not disappoint. It involves a family of Island Guards and some wahines. Daniel Ho’omalu is empowered by Pele, the goddess of fire and volcanoes, and Kanaloa.

“Kanaloa is the patron of our Hawaiian seas—the protector of all who dwell there.”

Claire Hunter is Melia's best friend who travels to Hawaii for Melia and Davids wedding (Daniels younger brother). When Daniel picks her up from the airport with her group, she is immediately attracted to him. She just wants an island fling and then go back to her normal life. Daniel rejects her time and time again...but inside he wants her bad. Due to a bad past experience with a tourist, he refuses to sleep around or give in to any weak wahine who can't handle his rough desires. Claire proves to him time and time again that she is anything but a weak wahine.

Daniel is a big, intimidating local who is covered in tattoos. He takes his role to Pele and Kanaloa serious. He fights his desire for Claire and tries to keep his distance. When Claire surprises him when he tries to scare her, he finds her he wants her even more. He is afraid to let his heart go and afraid to trust because he was wrongly accused of rape in the past. Claire and Daniel challenge each other throughout this book, which is very entertaining.

This was such a good story. It was funny at times, steamy at other times, and brilliant.

QUOTE FROM BOOK: “You betta get your ‘ēlemu wit dat cream,” advised a deep voice behind her. “If you wanna sit on it tonight.” Claire straightened so fast her spine twinged, whirling to glare at Daniel. “Is that your sweet way of telling me I need to sunscreen my ass?”

The supporting characters were great and the story flowed nicely. The author does a great job at describing the setting and actions of the characters and Hawaii. I really loved the use of Hawaiian words and phrases. Next book is about Bella, Melia and Claire's best friend. I can't wait to read it.

Supernatural powers

Daniel can breathe in the ocean and communicate with sea animals. He's attracted to Claire, who is visiting Hawaii, but doesn't want to be so he is unfriendly to her. She's physically attracted anyway and angry with herself for it. The whiplash back and forth is a little excessive. They'd have sex then he would immediately be rude, she'd stomp off but then go back for more. There is a lurking danger and other supernatural elements.

I loved the second book in the series as much as I loved the first one. The romance is sweet and the crime story kept me excited and on the edge of my seat. But what I liked best was the glimpse I got into the Hawaiian culture and their wedding ceremonies. I am looking forward to the next book in the series with, hopefully, more hot Hawaiians and more culture lessons.

I really didn’t connect

I really didn’t connect to these characters. They both kinda sucked. Angry, spoiled, big egos. Plus our hero kissed the girl then took another to his bed in the same night, then decides he wants our girl.

I was drawn to these books because they were set in Hawaii. I was not disappointed with the inclusion of the culture, the people and their language. I felt like I was in Hawaii. Very well written in this regard.

Pele has appointed one main family as guardians of her lands. Daniel is a descendent of that family, as is his brother in the first book, Walking in Fire. They both possess special powers from Pele to protect and keep Hawaii pristine from outside troubles, such as the drug smugglers encountered in both books. In the meantime, they find themselves falling in love with blondes who venture to the island, an unthinkable distraction to these men who have superpower jobs to do.

I loved the theme of these books until I finished the second book. The brother in the first book, Malu, is in charge of 'earth' powers and falls in love with a blonde, who ends up making a sacrifice to Pele to save Malu's life from bad guys before they can live happily ever after. "Hey, wait a second...that sounds familiar!" The problem? This is the same storyline used in Rolling in the Deep with brother, Daniel. Right down to the blondes, who are both feisty. (Being blonde 'shark bait' myself, it was nice to see blondes prevail, though it only seemed to be because they were different looking from traditional Hawaiians.) The only difference in these two books is that Daniel has 'water' powers. Both books even have a continuation of the same bad guys. I get a feeling there will be more stories from this series due to the way several other characters were presented. I hope so. However, Ms. Cade, it would be best if you could somehow vary your storyline. I hope book 3 will sound quite different, while continuing the sizzling love stories. Otherwise, I'll be feeling forced to read the same story for a third time in a row.

Carys' review posted on Guilty Pleasures

When polar opposites attract we get to sit by and watch the fireworks begin. People can’t help who they love even when they run screaming in the opposite direction of their heart’s desire. Buckle in for a wild ride in which two people fall in love and fight it till the bitter end.

Claire is a tough feisty woman who knows what she wants but is unwilling to tramp down her temper to please the man who haunts her dreams. She is snappy and doesn’t take any crap from the big Hawaiian and calls him on his bull shit. I love that she is mostly comfortable in her skin, but she is just like every woman who questions herself on occasions. She is not going to roll over on the issues that she feels strongly about, and I like that. Daniel is a bad boy with a heart of gold, even if he doesn’t believe he has a heart. He is rough and tough and a man’s man who is afraid of hurting the “fragile” Claire. His inner turmoil over his desire for her is very endearing and you fall in love with him because of his insecurities. He is the reason we fall for bad boys. And the sex is hot and wild just like the man. Makes me want to hop a flight to Hawaii and try a few things out.

I also love the beauty of the setting for this book. Cathryn Cade gives us a glimpse into the Hawaiian culture and the paradise that is Hawaii. I love that the history of the family and the beauty of their surroundings are so eloquently written about. It was a joy to catch a glimpse of the underwater world surrounding Nawea Bay.

This was a re-read for me and it was still a fun read.
Melia and David Ho'omalu are getting married and her friends are coming to Hawaii for the wedding.
Claire Hunter, Grace Moran and her daughter Bella meeting Daniel Ho'omalu at the airport.
Daniel saw Claire and was immediately drawn to her and was not about to follow through on that urge. He ignores her or tries to. Claire wants to have a island fling and go back to school with wonderful memories. Their emotional struggle and Daniel's need to protect the islands from the threat of drug being smuggled in. It is a romantic and action filled read.

The Ho’omalu family is one of the oldest families of the Hawaiian Islands. They are the chosen of Pele Hawaii’s Guardian. To this end she has given them gifts to help them carry out their duties.
Melia’s friends Claire, Grace and Bella have come to Hawaii for her wedding to Malu. Malu’s big brother Daniel is tasked to pick them up at the airport and another Ho’omalu is struck by lightning. At least that’s what Daniel is wishing for. He does NOT want to be attracted to Claire. He has his reasons not the least of which is that he is a Ho’omalu although his affinity is for the water not fire like his brother. In this book the Ho’omalu family is still trying to shut down the drug runners that are bringing in their kind of poison to the islands.
I loved watching big, bad, tattooed Daniel fall bit by bit.

I LOVED this book! There was not one thing I would change about this book. The characters in it are flawed which makes them perfect. The leading men in this story are sexy and strong with a sensitive side that made me fall for them...hard! The steamy parts were super steamy not like the watered down types in other books I have read. The action parts and the suspense was amazing and kept me on the edge of my seat! This book I have already "loaned" this book to friends of mine who love a good romance with some action thrown in. I received this book through Goodreads First Reads.

In my opinion, the book far surpasses the first book in the series. I loved Daniel, his fun abilities and I loved Clair. This book was exactly what I hoped it would be when I started it. Fast paced, fun, sexy and super entertaining. Can’t wait to see what happens in Book 3, Blooming in the wild.

This one went a little more slowly than the first book in the series, not such a fast read so I got a little anxious at time for the story to continue. Other than that it was really great and I loved the underwater scenes.
Happy readings!

Wet and wild

Claire loves all things ocean, and she's in Hawaii as her best friends bridesmaid, so she plans on being in the water. Daniel is a guardian and the ocean is his territory but one look at Claire and he's caught. But there is evil coming to Hawaii again and it's up to Daniel and his family to protect it.
