If you could invent something, which would make the world a better place, would you do it? Would you do it for money? Would you do it for fame? Or, would you just do it for the good of humanity?

Dale Sherman, a military biochemist, invented a drug he called MC-148, (MC – Mind Changing) that he said would eliminate crime. That it would change a person’s mentality and erase all desire to do wrong, and in doing so, would eliminate millions, if not billions of dollars spent yearly on court proceedings, ultimately abolishing the death penalty, and doing away with the world’s prison systems.

Not only would it do that, but MC-148 had the ability to convince anyone who took it, that just by suggestion and the addition of props, that they had been transported to another time or place.

Dr. Sherman convinced Major General Adam Marsh, his commanding officer, of his findings and of how much wealth they would attain from its use, and together they got approval from their commanding general to begin a study.

All they needed was living guinea pigs to administer the medicine to and a place out of the public eye in which to perform the study. General Worley made a few calls and got agreement to have inmates from the states of Arizona and New Mexico prison systems released to the Dr.’s custody and even gave them a place to live.

They called the town, Deadwood, and created it patterned after the original Deadwood in South Dakota, and to fully test the drugs power of mind control, they lived as if it were the late 1800’s.

Things were going fine until one of the study members went berserk, killed some of the other townsfolk, and escaped. He went on a crime spree, killing other members of society, and to avoid having the study discontinued, the doctor and Major General sent two men after him.

When it was found that the scheme involved not only a Major, a Major General, a General, and two state governors, the men trailing the escaped killer were forced to change the focus of their investigation. And when a small town sheriff, a New Mexico state police chief and his men, became involved, the whole thing got blown out of proportion.

Murder, kidnapping, lies and deceit, are only part of what happens in this story about one man’s desire to make this world a better place for us all. And in the end, he finds that it can’t be done.
