Thrilled to see Havoc (The Day After Never, #7) was released on audible today, (Sat. June 22, 2019), so I will not be left hanging or forget plot when having to revisit after too much time away from an unfinished series.

This episode, Perdition (The Day After Never, #6) is overflowing with nonstop action, character conflicts, and an ending which left me speechless.

Can't wait to start number seven - especially after reading the enticing synopsis and great reviews. Stay tuned...

Lucas wants to leave and head back to his family. But, as luck would have it Astoria is invaded by the Chinese. In the process of evacuating the town to Newport, his friend, Ruby and some of the other ladies are captured. In Portland, the biker gang is relocating to Salem to escape the radiation poisoning. No matter which way Lucas turns he has a battle to fight.

Blake’s sixth novel in The Day After Never series, Perdition, asks the question ‘do you keep running or take the fight to the enemy?’ And, there are multiple enemies.

This is one of the best books in this series.

5 out of 5 stars.

I QUIT!!

Pardon my fumed, wordy, hissy-fit, rant of a review, but…these things happen sometimes. I don’t expect anyone to read it, but it’s quite fine. I understand completely. But a girl’s gotta vent.

I legit can’t do it anymore. I hate not finishing books/series I start. I always make myself go through with it. I require it of myself. So right now, I feel like I’m betraying my inner code of book-reading ethics or something. I tried. I really, really, TRIED. I originally thought this book had 5 in the series, and I trudged through the 5th being oh so proud to have made it, only to discover I had 4 more. “Ugh, no!!” I remember thinking. But I sighed and carried on with book number 6. Begrudgingly. “Surely it can’t get worse,” I thought. Right? Wrong. It can get worse. It DID get worse. But believe me when I say, if there ever comes a time amid a story where I too much find myself thinking, “Omg. I. Don’t. CAAAAAAAARE!!!” then it’s all over for me. This series has 9 books and I’ve given up at 6. I can’t. I won’t. Not anymore. There’s no gun to my head to make me keep going, so I’ve chosen to stop.

I’m not bothering offering reviews for all the previous books in the series. It’s all being summarized right here after the final book I completed, #6. Why? Because THERE’S NOTHING NEW TO SEE!!! The premise SEEMED intriguing in book 1, earning 3 stars. Semi-interesting characters in a post-apocalyptic world. Trying to survive. Ammo is the new currency (lame imo, but whatever). I get it. It was okay. Then book 2 came around and it was…. more of the same. Not enough to earn another star so it stayed at a 3 count. Then book number 3 came around and…. wow. Still nothing fascinatingly interesting. Again? Then the pattern was laid out for me: Each book in this needlessly dragged out series are exact mimics of the one preceding it. Moments and scenes and action and character personalities are repeating themselves over and over and over and over again (much like that sentence) like a freaking echo and I’m SICK OF IT. There's an excess world of guns that just does NOTHING for me, and I feel like the author just really, really, REALLY likes guns. But I don't know guns, and I didn't feel led to like them or familiarize myself with them in a way that makes me accept them to the point I need to. Using ammo as a means of currency literally makes zero sense in a world where bullets are no longer being made, yet, there's plenty to exchange. Are the bullets never being used either? It would never work or last.

Lucas is the star in this world: the magical man with an unlimited supply of ammo and who seems to always be everyone’s savior with nary a deadly wound to keep things even REMOTELY interesting. No. Better to put everyone else in this story at compromising situations due to their own stupidity (and again, REPEATEDLY) so he can swoop in and do his Lucas things and always, always be right. Again. And any wounds he DOES get are conveniently forgotten about. Any time he MIGHT be in a dangerous situation ends abruptly, as if to say “Ha-ha, nah, just kidding.” Because of Lucas the Great, threats of malice towards people, places, or things, don’t always feel that threatening. Behold! The mightily immortal Lucas will (YET AGAIN!) know just what to do to save the day. And if he fails, it’s everyone else’s fault for not listening to him. So, then he sets things back on course because he’s always right. He’s the master of all things apocalyptic. And he’s perfect. He has no likable personality, but heck, since when do you need personality to be perfect? NOT IN THIS WORLD! And there’s 3 more books, so I just KNOW he’s gonna be just fine in any situation. Maybe the last book can prove otherwise, maybe die a hero’s death and relieve me of my frequent eye rolls, but I sure as hell ain’t sticking around to find out. Perhaps one day I’ll read the summary on the internet, but seeing as how no longer care, it’s likely not gonna happen anytime soon.

The characters in this series are obnoxiously annoying, often acting so much like each other that it’s hard to pick them apart. The villains are bland and all the same. No difference in personality. Remove one, and the next one is exactly the same. This must have happened 2 or 3 times. Plus, there’s too many characters, which is likely why so many are expendable and I so often found myself thinking, wait, who were you again? But that got old REAL fast. That would likely also explain the “watery” feel of said characters, and how they often seemed alike other than by name. Seriously, there was a moment when one main character gets mad at another main character for acting a certain way, and then a few chapters later, the first character acts the exact same way and I forgot who I was reading. Like freaking, REALLY?!? And even Golden Boy Lucas, when he at last had a moment where he’s not mega perfect in all things, does something so astronomically STUPID that I’m pretty sure I remember badmouthing him out loud as I read it. The dude gets all pissy at someone for not doing a task he demanded to be done in his absence, declares that he can no longer trust said person, then immediately STILL puts the exact same task in the person’s hands and leaves the person on their own (AGAIN!!) as if he wasn't grilling him 5 FREAKING SECONDS AGO. Hello?! What the hell was the point then? So of course, something bad happens and now there’s another scenario for Lucas to rectify when he could have prevented it from the get-go. OMG.

No one, absolutely NO ONE is appealing to read. No one is likable to relate to. At all. I’m not even freaking exaggerating. Literally the only acceptable character is his horse, Tango. And the “love story” in this story between two main characters is so nauseatingly atrocious it’s not even a little bit charming or cute. Legit the only thing that felt required for it to materialize was for each character to possess opposite genitals and That’s. It. It had a “Me man, you woman, let’s mate” type of feel to it with NO rhyme or reason why EITHER of the characters suddenly falls madly in ridiculous “love” with the other. It was rushed, nonsensical, and ridiculous. No chemistry. No endearing aspects from anyone. I didn’t believe in the product, but the product was still shoved into my hand against my will. I didn’t buy it and I didn’t like being MADE to buy it. And I resented being forced to even READ through the thing when all I wanted to do was toss it on a shelf to collect dust and never think about it again. I hated it.

Further (and this is likely my own personal nitpickiness towards anyone who writes books or screenplays), but it needs to be said: I hate…no, I LOATHE when characters say each other’s names every other sentence. It’s unrealistic, distracting, and damn right ANNOYING. And the characters say each other’s names WAY too much during this whole series up to now. Seriously, really think about this anyone who’s out there reading through this rant of mine, if you even made it this far. Think about the conversations you have with folks throughout your day. How often do you say their name in your sentences? Except for getting their attention or perhaps driving a point home in a heated debate or the like, I’m thinking not much. But in THIS story? Total name fest in such as a fashion as the following:

“I don’t know what you mean, Bob.”
“Sure you do, Anne.”
“I seriously don’t, Bob.”
“Do you really believe that, Anne?”
“Bob, I don’t know how to make it clearer for you.”
“Try, Anne, really try.”
“Whatever you say, Bob.”

Who freaking talks like that? NOBODY! And these books are LITTERED with such dialogue. I never had a problem with the names “Lucas” and “Sierra” before, and I feel like these books have ruined them for me. The annoyance factor was dialing in the red zone the more I immersed myself in this story and that’s no way to enjoy a book. I can’t quite find things I even really liked in these books or things that merits compliments. The premise. I’ll go with that. Extra star is solely for the premise. End of the world stuff is always appealing when I can buy it. When I’m wooed to it. It didn’t work this time. It failed miserably. I hated this series and never want to finish it at all. It's needlessly long (hah, much like this rant of a review, eh?) At the very least, the six of them I DID manage to trudge through contributed to my book count for the year. (Let's go, 100 count!) So there’s that. And ONLY that. Literally. *sigh*

The Day After Perdition Russell Blake

America is in chaos. Lawlessness. Ruthless gangs are in charge of major cities. The Chinese have a battleship with a full military compliment in Oregon. There homeland is in chaos also. There food supplies diminished. Everything is gone, a direct result of an EMP attack, which has affected America, Europe, Asia... everywhere. This is a chilling tale of survival. Lucas , the primary character is thrust into a position of leadership, something he didn't ask for . He has a family and will do whatever it takes to survive. This is an excellent read. Only the strong and people who are willing to fight will survive. I highly recommend.

Ending

I am sad to see this series ending. Lucas, Rudy and the rest of the gang are pure fighters who have learned to take the good with the bad. On a slippery slope. I’d like to know what was in it for the Illuminati to sale out the Pacific Northwest. I have my theories, but don’t want to issue any spoiler alerts.

Anyhow, Lucas and crew along with the radiation handed the Chinese a major set back. So, of course I was rooting for the home team and so sinking a battleship was major league.

Texas Ranger in Dystopian America

A good blend of heroic Wild West and post killer flu apocalypse.

Over all an entertaining and diverting series aside from some plot contrivances that are to transparent. A for instance: the good guys manage a vaccine and have an airplane, do they use it to distribute oh hell no. So they send our hero on long rides, but do they vaccinate anyone on the way?

Suspend your disbelief at the occasional stupid, a pretty good tale.

Plenty of action and surprises!

The author continues to keep you engrossed in this post apocalyptic series! With the bad guys coming from every direction, our character must be constantly on his guard. I look forward to the next in the series.

Wearying of the Series

The story isn't half-bad, even though there are several subplots to keep track of. I'm just getting tired of all the killing and battles and no happy ending in sight. Six books in and it's clear the fight with The Illuminati hasn't really begun.

Exciting still

Six books into the series and I’m still thrilled with it. Lol, I found one mistake! Still so unusual to read a book written with good grammar and no spelling errors from Kindle unlimited. Lucas is sometimes a little too perfect but hey, it’s fun so why not!

Interesting, but it dragged a bit

There were good plot twists here. But the pace of the storytelling faltered, particularly with Lucas having to try and talk sense with so many characters.

Book #6 is a nice conclusion to Book #5 and yet leaves the reader knowing there is more to come. I especially enjoyed books #5 and #6 because Lucas and Ruby were back together as a team.
