From time to time, the “haves” of society shape and manipulate the type of information the “have-nots” absorb and become. The “haves” tamper with information so to control the type of thoughts and actions the “have-nots” might conjure. If the “have-nots” were free to think freely, they might challenge the status quo. If the current state of affairs is modified, “the haves” might lose their status as “the haves” and the power they're accustom to. The accumulation of each instance has birthed an illusion and every person is subject to the misinformation. To make matters worse, most people are born with a trusting mindset and do not expect the deception. Nor are they prepared for it. The mystery is worldwide and evident throughout written history. The manner in which the world is presented isn’t complete and fabrications are scattered throughout the chronology. Mike Bhangu was born in Canada, to immigrants from “the land of a million martyrs”, Punjab, and from a very young age, Mike’s rebellious nature predisposed him to challenge the status quo. His metaphysical knuckles are yet to completely heal, and on those hot and dry days, the scars are quick to act as a Morning Glory flower. Fortunately, Mike’s fascination with philosophy, sociology, political science, popular culture, religion, theology, mysticism, and history focused his defiant predispositions and tamed his tendency to make fists.
Mike’s attraction to knowledge gave meaning to the passions, and motivated by reason, he unclenched and picked up a pen to communicate his rebellion. The by-product has been several unique and insightful non-fiction publications. Each challenges the status quo and each highlights ideas that will help free the mind from the illusions that enslave us all.
Bear Witness.

I bought this book because the book reviews are intriguing. In particular, the one-star reviews. The one-star reviews are obvious troll reviews, and as are the profiles these reviews were posted from. I wonder who it is? Is it a competing author or publisher? Is it the establishment? Why is someone trying to keep me from reading this book?
I wanted to know what was in this book that was so intimidating. My big question before reading was: what did the author reveal?
And I knew it! “Distracted and Defeated” shares ideas kept secret from the mainstream. This book reveals the many tricks employed to keep the common person from achieving their potential and becoming the best that he or she can be. For example, certain beliefs we perceive as in our favour are actually beliefs that obstruct a person’s potential.
“Distracted and Defeated” is definitely a book everyone should read. I didn’t agree with all the ideas but many of the ideas this book shares introduced me to a new way of viewing the world. I’m better for it. I better understand my place within this chaotic world and the game played by those who rule the world.
In what begins as a great summary of how the rich rule, D&D flails and sputters between moments of Ben Shapiro and Marx with a dash of Pete Evans. It's full of assumptions and although at times Bhangu gets a lot right, it's basically just a giant opinion piece written by someone who can't pick a lane.
There was a lot of good in this book, but there was also a lot of bad. The good parts were very good, but the confusing grammar (he often sounds like Yoda from Star Wars) and the occasional misogyny were disappointing. This could be a good introductory book to inspire people to resist the dominant culture, but I don't recommend it for those who already think it is necessary to do so. Yes, those in power take advantage of the rest of us, and if we want to live healthy and happy lives we must stop them from harming us as well as the living planet.
I was hoping for more from this book. It wasn't the history or strategy lesson I was hoping for, but is rather a summary of how those in power stay in power. Another big problem with this book is that it speaks of civilization as a good thing, rather than as the infrastructure that keeps those in power in power. For those who want to read about a strategy to take power away from the powerful, I suggest books such as Deep Green Resistance and Endgame by Derrick Jensen.
I found his literary style off putting; his misuse of English is jarring and his outlook seems simplistic or juvenile. The book holds interest as a window into the mindset of 2020’s version of a total hippy or beatnik. There are some universal and some individual new ideas but they are hard to synthesize from the format and the wording. Despite these faults, or perhaps because of them, my “pauses to ponder” seem to be productive of some new perspectives. . I would probably add two more stars (for a total of four stars) if I had read a version published by a regular publishing house. This paperback version would be better suited to a web site. I do recommend Distracted and Defeated for a young collage grad trying to make sense of the crazy world he/she will have to live in.
Not the best spent time here... The flow was very awkward, given what can only be assumed that English is not the authors first language. Which isn't a problem necessarily, unless your editors don't bother to correct the grammatical errors throughout. The rest of the book is full of opinion on society and uses fictional books as a reference to justify the options as if they were factual.
Despite this being a short book, it is still arduous to agree to everything stated by the author – there are many ideas - some fantastic, some farcical.
But it does indeed raise some valid questions and offer some good food for thought, such as: - It’s the intent of those in power to keep the people distracted, so they can be easily defeated. - The working class are idiots, who toil away to make the rich richer. They are slaves to the money and stuck an endless loop of debt; so they keep running that rat race, because there’s no exit. - Why does not anybody question this? For the same reason Zebras don’t collectively attack a chasing Lion – they are more focused on outrunning their assumed competition (the next Zebra) than actually joining together to attack the enemy.
Distracted and Defeated centers around how all societies throughout history have been controlled by the elite, journalists and their publications, an appeased academic class, and the prisoners themselves who have been numbed to their purpose. It is a thought-provoking read for anyone, though those who believe "The Man" is keeping them down will particularly enjoy it. Mike Bhangu makes some interesting correlations and asks questions of the reader which require a little mulling-over.
