1842 - Eleanor McManus, upright daughter of a minister, is rescued from kidnappers by a rough and tumble fur trader, Beauregard Gentry, in the wilderness of northern Virginia. With Beauregard’s help, Eleanor makes her way back to her intended groom who declares her soiled, and she finds herself alone, pressured to make life decisions without benefit of family or others she can trust. Beauregard and Eleanor agree to begin a life together, build their legacy together, and their growing devotion to each other is witnessed one cold, crisp Christmas morning.
This novella was originally included in the anthology Christmas in America.

Holly Bush is a new to me author and I was granted the privilege of obtaining this gifted story to read. For a short novella, it had all the makings needed to tell the story of Beau and Eleanor. Both characters show much inner strength considering the shortfalls that life threw at them...one from childhood and the other from adulthood. Whatever obstacles, they made the best of them to forge new beginnings in both their lives..something they both needed.
Maury Light is a new to me narrator. I thought he did an excellent job on the male voices, however the female voices needed a bit more work. Overall, the story was well written and a nice comfort clean historical romance that had a nice HEA.
The blurb for this story pretty much sums up everything that happens in this story. It's short, it's sweet, and it's got a happy ending. I enjoyed the fact that despite how quick the story was it still enabled you to learn enough about the characters enough for you to either love or hate them. It was even easy to believe how fast our heroine marries our hero despite all that she has been through. A girl just knows when she knows.
I read this book as part of an anthology but thought it deserved it's own short review so that I can rate it the stars that I have. A good story deserves recognition.
This was a nice quick read. I have never read this author before and she has managed to convert me into a Holly Bush fan. The characters were great I really appreciated the challenges that Eleanor and Beau faced and how Ms. Bush built them up and how they worked together to produce such a captivating historical romance. Although this was a short story it does not leave you wanting and it is a great precursor to the next books in the Gentry series. I would highly recommend this author to any historical romance lovers or anyone who enjoys romance books in general. ~A Book Obsessed Chicks Review Team Selection
I read this novella as part of an anthology so I thought I would leave the review here also.
Set in 1842, Into the Evermore starts out running and keeps up a good pace throughout. Eleanor McManus, the daughter of a devout minister, has been taken captive in the wilds of Virginia after her parents and siblings are murdered. Just as she is about to be sold to some ungainly men, Beauregard Gentry comes to her rescue. He escorts her to the nearest town where her betrothed decides she is unfit after what has happened to her. Again, Beau comes to her aid by helping her bury her family and then finds her a decent place to stay for the time being. As the two grow close, they decide to begin a life together.
Into the Evermore is the first in a new series by Holly Bush. It sets the stage nicely for the next installment. I truly enjoy Holly’s writing style and her expert dialogue. It’s easy and enjoyable to picture in your mind what her words are painting. I’m looking forward to this series and highly recommend you this to historical fiction lovers.
(I received an advance copy of this story from the author in exchange for my honest review.)
This is a sweet story, although very short. Nonetheless, I did enjoy it. I liked the characters and the plot. I look forward to reading the next one in this series. Happy ☺reading 📚
A touching, sweet romance. Eleanor suffered a tragedy and though her life didn't go as planned, with the love of Beau Gentry, her life was more than she'd ever imagined. A phenomenal start to what looks to be an amazing series. I can't wait to visit with the Gentrys again!
Into the Evermore is book one in The Gentry’s of Paradise series by Holly Bush. This book is a small 6 chapter novella that sets the stage for the rest of the series. I thought that the story was very well written. It started off with a bang and held my attention all the way through. I think I fell a little bit in love with Beauregard Gentry. Rough around the edges, Beau is a man of honor and integrity. “I don’t know of any other way to describe it - not the act or how I feel about you - as anything but love. I never imagined myself loving anything or anyone. But I will love you until the last moment of my life and beyond into the evermore. I am sure of it.” I thought Bush did an excellent job with the heroine’s character - Eleanor McManus. Eleanor is a survivor of horrific trauma. Bush does a good job accurately portraying a trauma victim which is not an easy thing to do.There is a spicy sex scene in the book. I look forward to reading more in this series.
Eleanor survives a highwayman attack on her wagon where her entire family was violated and killed. The bandit tries to sell Eleanor, the eldest daughter, into white slavery. Beau (short for Beauregard) saves her by killing / stabbing the seller & potential buyers (1 seller, 3 potential buyers) and saving her. She's malnourished and semi-frostbitten at this point. Eleanor learns what a gentleman and hard worker Beau is and takes him as her husband. Fighting town gossip & the meager pittance left by her family, the two of them work together to build the farm and stables of their dreams. The scene where they finally consummate the marriage was pretty steamy, too!
Loved this book because, even though it's short, there's so much packed into the pages. The story itself is gripping and it sets the framework well for subsequent books. I'm excited to read the series!
I knew the author a hundred years ago, sorta. She was one of the cool upper classmen(persons) in my high school. Since I don't know too many writers from my home town I decided to veer off my normal menu of detective novels, biography, history, and general fiction to read one of Holly's romance series. I can only hope nobody outs me, but I enjoyed this novella a lot. Spoiler alert... It helped that it opened in a hail of gunfire to ease me into the genre. I am now going to try the follow-on novel and am hoping it will start with a gripping hostage scene to keep me grounded.
Fun, quick and cute read. Heartbreaking and heartwarming all at once. I liked the characters, both strong in their own ways. My problem with it was it was a bit corny throughout the store, but I’m very glad I read it. Touching.
This was a short quick enjoyable read. I enjoyed it a great deal. The story was well done and was a good introduction and I will definitely have to look into the others in the series.
I haven't really read any historical romances, but I found Into the Evermore a delightfully refreshing read.
There's something inherently romantic about how men in the 1800s treated women. The way Beau cares for Ellie is so incredibly sweet, and the respectful way he thought about her - caring more about her character and behavior - was such a change of pace. It's the polar opposite of today's alpha-males where the whole attraction is based on looks. That’s not to say our hero and heroine weren’t attracted to each other, or weren’t driven to act on their feelings of attraction, but there was such a different mindset back then. There are a lot of things about the 1800s I wouldn’t want to go back to (no indoor plumbing is at the top of the list), but the concept of a man being concerned for a woman’s virtue was such a nice change of pace!
I read this book in preparation for reading the second book of this series, and I really liked it. When it ended, I kinda wished it went on longer so I could read more about Beau and Ellie! And now I’m looking forward to reading this whole series.
A quick read but it whet my appetite to read more of the series. Sadness, happiness, caring, family and lots of love. Set in 1842 in Virginia there was a lot of story being told. Eleanor and Beau meet under the worst of circumstances but he proves his worth to her over and over again. Definitely more than the church people who should have helped her but didn't.
A few twists and turns with some surprises that turned into a heartwarming story. Loved Eleanor and Beau's feelings for each other but also how they treated each other. Some closure with a happily ever after in the offing. There was an excerpt of the next book in the series, For the Brave. While it was a surprising opening I do look forward to reading more of it.
Ms. Bush is a new to me author only having read one other book that she's written. I look forward to reading more of them and not only in this series.
In 1842, as the family of the new town minister journey to through the wilderness of Virginia the are set upon by bandits and the oldest daughter is kidnapped. She has witnessed the murder of her beloved family. Eleanor McManus finds herself captured and being sold for the pleasure of some very seedy outlaws.
It is at this point that Beauregard Gentry intercedes on her behalf. He kills all her the men who hold her captive. He then takes her back to his cabin to help her heal. He is always the gentlemen and when she is strong enough he takes her back to Winchester to be reunited with her betrothed. Her intended declares her soiled and wants no part of her.
This novella is quite heart moving. These two unlikely people find themselves attracted to each other in an almost impossible situation. I found the story very cute but somewhat lacking. Hoping to read more about these two in future books.
I love it when a happy ending comes from a tragic beginning. Eleanor has lost everything ANF was saved by Beauregard. He takes care of her and they agree to marry. They will be the start of something good and wonderful. To have a miracle of a visitor at the end was sweet.
This is t he first book I've ready by Holly Bush. I enjoyed it and it moved right along. I'm not sure I felt a connection between Beau and Eleanor. It's a good quick read with a happy ending.
It was too short for my taste. And everything climaxed too fast. If the first is going to be like that the whole collection should be a box set for free not just the first one.
This is the first book in The Gentrys of Paradise, a Historical Romance, and a prequel to the series. Eleanor and Beauregard’s story is beautifully written, sweet, and heartwarming. Maury Light did a good job with the narration.
This novella introduces the patriarch and matriarch of the Gentry family who are brought together by tragedy when Beau rescues Eleanor from a violent man who kidnapped her after thieves murdered her parents and sisters. Their story is heart wrenching, heartwarming and uplifting and I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the Gentry’s of Paradise series by Holly Bush.
This was a cute little story, though the plot was nothing new. I still think it will be an enjoyable series to read. One thing that bothered me, and I hope the author changes in her future writings, is the dialogue. The phrasing was awkward, and it just didn’t flow. Other than that, this was a nice, quick read.
