I had already read "Shining City" and "The Seafarer," both of which are stunning plays. I've taught "The Seafarer," too, and it worked really well. So when I picked up this book it was to read "The Veil," "The Birds," and "The Dance of Death". I didn't like "The Veil" and "The Dance of Death" - not enough there and too grim. "The Birds," however, was great--I could picture it and the characters were interesting and well drawn. Since those 3 plays were fantastic I gave it four stars, even though I only read the last few for the first time. I'd like to see McPherson get back to working deep backstories and legend into his plays.
