This is a much better introductory book on tenkara than several others seen here. Mostly it's a practical guide. As a beginner this book answered several questions I still had from other works. And there's the videos. Straight forward and clear; the epitome of a picture being worth a thousand words. I'd read books, blogs and forums and if not for a little five minute video on casting in would have been doing it all wrong.
My only concern, a niggle if you will, is the occasional self reference to Tenkara USA. No aggressive pushing, just references to product areas they cover. Something to be mindful of.
A fine introduction to tenkara fishing by the founder of TenkaraUSA. Tenkara is a 6oo year old Japanese approach to flyfishing that is most suitable to the rivers and streams of Japan, but which can translate to the lakes and wider rivers here in the US.
The emphasis of tenkara is simplicity. The rod does not take a reel. No long line to tangle with. The fisher can typically get through a day using only one fly, without the need to second guess matching the hatch. Tenkara flies are generic in appearance, resemble any bug a trout might imagine, and supple enough to add movement while in the water.
Credited as bringing Japanese Tenkara to the United States in 2009, Daniel Galhardo in very simple words and in an elegantly designed book explains the basics of Tenkara. This covers only the basics and does so very well. I recently re-read it to see if I had missed anything from my first reading as I had just started fishing Tenkara last year. This is well worth the money and is a good first-step when starting this fun method of fly fishing.
Great resource for anyone interested in, or just starting out in tenkara, like myself. I will go back to it many times for the knowledge and tips I need to improve.
