When thirty-two-year-old veterinarian Jill Christie begins a journey to find love again by dating one man of every sign of the zodiac, she doesn't expect to come full circle and find the passion she’s lost in other areas of her life. In the end, it’s her sentimental ties to a childhood home that bring closure to the tragic accident that happened there, and brings Jill in touch with the secret to find love. Author's The butterfly on the astrology chart is symbolic in this story, and the locket is my real necklace. Inside the locket is a photo of my beloved cat who would have been eighteen years old on Valentine's Day. The deep red color of the spine is called "Valentine."
On one level, Looking for Leo by Patti Cavaliere is the story of a search for love, but the story that captured me even more poignantly was of the main character Jill’s search for herself. Like so many of us, a failed relationship has rocked Jill to her very center. Also like many of us, the true explanation for her loss of balance reaches much deeper into her being and further back into her personal story than this current heartbreak. She has a quest ahead of her, a lot to experience and even more to learn. We want all of that to turn out spectacularly for her as we grow to like her more and more. She deserves love because she has so much love in her. We see that in the way she cares for and about the animals in her charge as a dedicated veterinarian. I, personally, found myself hoping that, first and foremost, she would find love for herself. Her journey, through the houses of the zodiac and the chambers of her own heart, did not disappoint. I highly recommend Looking for Leo. Alice Orr.
What a beautiful and human story about the fear of loneliness and the need for connection. And the way the main character comes to see that, as Cavaliere puts it, "a relationship without respect would never amount to much."
Cavalier deftly follows a number of threads--the main character's pain over a sudden and unexpected breakup with her fiance; her dilemma between buying a beloved property or the practice at which she works as a veterinarian; of the main character's search for love; of her fear of performing veterinary surgery. And then, satisfyingly, resolve each of them by the end.
Your eyes will water at the ending.
Cavaliere has a gift for detail and for leavening heavy scenes with wit and for fleshing out characters.
I really enjoyed this book once I got into it. After awhile I could not out it down . I loved the characters and the relationship hilly had with her dear friend.
I found a lot of personal connection in this novel, being a Leo myself. The veterinary backdrop is fun and the author is knowledgeable of the subject. I also enjoyed the premise of how the heroine goes about healing her broken heart, dating her way through the zodiac. Light, easy read; I feel I've gotten to know the main character, Jilly, personally.
