It has been a wild ride for Jelly the Ooze since he was born. Adopted as a pet by a princess, obtaining a soul and a mind, and being blessed by a caring family and doted on by powerful gods. Now, Jelly is accompanying Princess Liliana on her way to the Royal Varian Academy of Magic where they both plan to learn more about the mystical arts. But not all is well, for a mad woman seeks the death of Varia's princess and will stop at nothing to ensure it happens. Add onto that new friends, bullies, and a prophecy, and Jelly has his tendrils full keeping the people he knows and loves safe. Plus, the Ooze has two new companions of his own to deal with and a rather eccentric mentor. In the end, can anyone truly stop the coming of the void? And will Jelly be the one to try?
Amazingly fun book with a quirky cast. Ian Rodgers seems to have a knack for giving details of his world without overwhelming you, his world building is on point. Jelly's growth in magic and into a more complex "person" exploded in this book (in a good way). His new friends were interesting and well developed too. I would like to applaud the author on the editing in this book (book one needed it badly); good editing makes such a difference when trying to immerse yourself into the world the author has created. Now the reason for the 4 star review; like book one, every conflict has a neatly wrapped solution that is fairly obvious. *POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD* I was never worried that any of the main cast (even the side cast too) was going to die. They get hurt badly (like limbs ripped off badly) but ta-dah nifty healing potion to the rescue. It does state that it will take time for them to be fully healed but they will make a full recovery. I hate to say it but, the death or permanent injury of side characters makes a book have more tension; it also gives the MC greater motivation and usually some deep personal growth as well. * END POSSIBLE SPOILERS* I just wish there was a bit more wondering what the outcome of each situation will be. All in all though a fabulous book with awesome main character. Go Jelly!!
It started as a continuation of the previous book. Really decent with some gramtical issues scattered throughout. Nothing too awful. However, there started to occur slight inconsistancies deep into the book.
The last arc especially. Like the slime only using a high potion to "desperately" save someone only to later pull out an elixir that would have actually done the job practically five minites later. The story also ignored the previously already stated and acknowlegded effects of the soul ring he gave the princess.
And then, the cherry on top was the epilogue. It was forced and came out of left field. It was like we were going along, being told a story, and then the author just decided to pull the rug out from underneath us and tell a different story. With almost no transition or story prep. It makes some sense, hence 3 stars and not 1 or 2.
We also keep getting introduced to more and more ways that he could becomer really powerful and then it's tucked away never to be mentioned again.
Seriously not sure if I'll continue the story but regretfully so. 👎
Yikes, I am unsure if we will finish the series I was told this series is for kids and similar to the Minor Mage by T. Kingfisher in humor and style. Book one was fine for kids and I gave it 5 stars because my kids loved it ages six, nine, and twelve. However, in book two the author added a bunch of unnecessary swearing. To be clear I am fine with some strong language especially if it's used correctly like in harry potter's use of the word Bitch referring to a female dog and adding to the tension of the story. In this book we have lots of random use of bastard, shit and bitch used not in the meaning of the word or to add more emotion to the plot but just as a random insult to try and make the book more adult. The language is more adult but the story has not matured the story is still very much more tween feeling I am not at all sure who the author's ideal reader was age-wise.
Fully embracing the Harry Potter vibe this second installment ships the main cast off to magic high-school introducing a set of quirky teachers and teenage supporting characters. If you or your children enjoyed the first book in the series then this continuation is a no brainier. Pretty much better all around than the first book this one is longer but better paced and pretty successful at growing up with it's audience including (slightly) more mature themes, more action, higher stakes and increased complexity to the societal and magic systems introduced earlier.
Very enjoyable book. However spelling and grammar is still an issue, tenses are still wrong, still missing words in a few places; like he just stopped in the middle of a sentence came back later thinking he had finished and just started the next. Also some places where the same words are repeated. But it was not as bad as the first in the series. Still the story is great! Looking forward to the next one.
This keeps impressing me with just how good and heartwarming it is. Each book is better than the last
Warning. While the author has corrected the problem with tenses that I remarked on in the first book, he is still in need of a good copyeditor in this one. Nothing that prevents you from grasping the intended words feom context, and once again the story is so good that it burns through the errors.
This is how you write a story, good opening, interesting but connected middle, satisfying ending...too many stories have weak middles and cliff hangers instead of proper resolutions...though I am sad that the whole magic pet premise will be going away and we'll be likely saying goodbye to the princess I feel that this series overall has been stellar.
This story of a monster becoming a sentient being is a very interesting entertaining story that I really enjoyed. Most of this book was at the mage school, while an disgruntled aunt of the princess tries to kidnap her. I did not enjoy the cliffhanger ending, and I can't wait for the next installment.
The book is fun and it kept me engaged throughout the whole book but often I found myself getting a little bored. I recommend the book but it's not perfect could of been funnier or more cheesy. It's hard to describe it never felt like anyone in the book was in danger despite quite a few deaths in the book.
Started ok, got boring half way trough, the action stays still, a lot of text' of what the mc is thinking rather than just doing. the cliche fairy and a ghost voice freaking cliche just pissed me off, stop repeatting the same story every damn time, be original! got the third book so I gonna read it, but' heck this is gonna be a choore'
Boring in the beginning, ridiculous in the middle, horrible in the end. The main character is idiotic with how easily be is used. No actions await the villains. The support characters do not. The story, when it finally arrives, is ludicrous. This one is bad.
This book was incredible, twists I never saw coming, more intriguing and acts of both kindness and horror, this one is one of my favorites now, and it leaves so much open for future books. Can't wait.
Monster POV Story. The story continues with the princess and the slime going to magic school. I enjoyed the story. (Will be reading book 3 when I get a chance.)
Writer gets better with descriptions and most importantly with its amount. }:D Still plenty of childish naivety. Which sometimes just asks for "facepalm time"... }X)))
I love this series, for several different reasons: 1. Slimes, I always like books with slimes, such as the slime dungeon. 2. Jelly is so cute!! You can practically feel the cuddiliness radiating from the pages. 3. Interesting plot, not a super twisty mystery, but good.
To keep it short, Book 1 talked about how a normal slime become something more and eventually a Royal Ooze/Slime while having a cute princess to guard. Book 2 builds on that. So, rather than a simple slime, we see the adventures of a human-like slime with its princess. We see the slime handles various things and act like a kid. However, the ending is not the way I would like it. And that's probably the same for many others.
Considering simply what I said, Book 3 continues on with the theme between Book 1 and 2. The slime progresses on with its adventures. The slime goes on a solo adventure, without the princess.
Book 1: The Princess and the Ooze. Book 2: The Ooze learning magic with the Princess tagging along. Book 3: The Ooze going on an adventure.
