An all-new Doctor Who adventure featuring the Eighth Doctor and reimagined in the style of Roger Hargreaves.
Two warring races. One Time Lord. Dr. Eighth finds himself stuck in middle of an ancient feud and must rely on his wits to save the day.
These storybook mash-ups, written and illustrated by Adam Hargreaves, combine the iconic storytelling of Doctor Who with the whimsical humor and design made famous by his father, Roger Hargreaves.
Dr. Eighth continues this series of witty and tongue-in-cheek storybooks--each featuring one of the twelve Doctors.
Adam Hargreaves is an English author and illustrator. The son of Roger Hargreaves, he continues his father's popular Mr. Men series of children's books. Hargreaves also served as inspiration for the series. When at the age of six he asked his father "What does a tickle look like?", Roger used that question to create the first book, Mr. Tickle.
3,5/5. Funny «adaptation» of Doctor Who with the Mr and Miss collection. I enjoy it. It's simple but always fun. I've read four of them and mostly enjoy them all. This one is probably a bit lower then the average!
As McGann's Doctor only had one TV story, he doesn't really have much to represent he's era. I think the way that they get around this was really well thought through with a great little in joke to another Doctor's era.
Marginally better than the others from this series I've read so far; for all that I still struggle to see who the target audience in, I can at least imagine a child getting something out of this book if you stuck it in front of them.
(Bizarrely deep cut: the Eighth Doctor is using his wooden sonic screwdriver from the Big Finish audios.)
This entry into the series goes off-piste, probably because the books are based purely on the TV series, in which the eighth Doctor has only a single story. So, here we have the Silurians from the Revived era in a war with the Sea Devils from the Classic era. It's a charming story and a reasonable way to add some more classic Doctor Who monsters to the series (unlike shoe-horning Troughton-era monsters into other Doctors' stories).
I just love the Eighth Doctor and this was brilliant. I think he was captured perfectly, and I thought it was pretty cool that he was brokering peace over a beach.
My favourite Doctor!!! If you haven't listenes to any Big Finish adventures then you only have the bare minimum representations of the 8th Doctor. From his tv movie to the 50th anniversary - 'Night of the Doctor', where we were finally blessed with an on screen regeneration. To 13th Doctor's last episode, were classic doctors remade an appearance. Therw wasn't really a villian to represent his era (going by tv appearances references) as The Master had already been used in another book. In this book the Doctor doesn't have a companion (would have been nice to have Charley-Big Finish) we get to see The Doctor with a wooden Sonic and during the second half, he helps save the day between a disagreement with the Silurians and Sea Devils. Where The Doctor ends up teaching them to share- which is always a good message for younger readers.
L'ottavo Dottore raggiunge la brigata raccontata da Adam Hargreaves. Più vicino al Dottore della Big Finish che non a quello del film, risulta perfetto come già visto nelle precedenti incarnazioni.
Dr. Eighth is a children's picture book written and illustrated by Adam Hargreaves and is a part of the Doctor Who Meets Mr Men and Little Miss series, which tells a story about the Eighth Doctor trying to settle a truce between the Silurian and the Sea Devils on a deserted island on Earth. Today is National Dr Who/T.A.R.D.I.S. Day (23 November) and I thought it would be apropos to read this today.
The text is rather simple and straightforward. I'm not sure how Hargreaves captured the essence of the Eighth Doctor because I don't know him all too well and just say him like a half a film, though considering Hargreaves' record I'm willing to think that it’s accurately portrayed. The illustrations are a perfect combination between the Doctor Who and the Mr Men and Little Miss universes. The Eighth Doctor depicted somewhat looks like Paul McGann from the Mr Men and Little Miss universe.
The premise of the book is rather straightforward. After rescuing a crew from a self-destructing spaceship, The Eighth Doctor thought a beach holiday on Earth would be great for them. When the T.A.R.D.I.S. landed – they ran away screaming, because they found a group of Silurians surrounding them. The Doctor is forced to delegate a peace treaty between the Silurian land dwellers and the Sea Devil water dwellers, which he eventually succeeds.
All in all, Dr. Eighth is a wonderful children's book about the Eighth Doctor and the perfect amalgamation of Dr. Who and the Mr Men and Little Miss universes.
The line about the Silurians and Sea Devils being "equally ugly" really rubbed me the wrong way. It doesn't seem to be in the spirit of Doctor Who at all. Apart from that, I think this is probably a better read than Dr. Eleventh, as the Doctor is actually trying to help people in this story.
Paul McGann's on-screen outing as the Doctor who bridged the Classic and NuWho series was a brief one. I remember watching the telemovie with my parents with great anticipation but feeling underwhelmed. All I remember now is that he was naked at the beginning? This story is quite a good one, starting with Doctor Who responding to a spaceship's distress call (because that always ends so well) and ending with Sea Devils and Silurians, beautifully rendered by Adam Hargreaves.
Doctor Who/Mr. Men collaboration originated by Roger Hargreaves.
I love this comical little series of books. We’ve been collecting them over the years. I’ve been catching up on the ones I bought for my son at Christmas.
Dr. Eighth receives a distress call from a spaceship and needs to rescue the crew. Back on Earth with the rescued crew, the Doctor must resolve a debate between the Silurians and Sea Devils.
I read this to the girls who thought the eighth Doctor was rather grumpy like the first Doctor. The picture on the cover set them on this track and the Doctor's apathetic attitude toward helping the Silurian and Sea Devil cousins work out a beach plan didn't help matters any. They loved the pictures of the Silurians and Sea Devils playing in the water and on the beach.
HAHAHAH it's the Mr. Men series meets Doctor Who!!! HAHA hilarious as the child-like Mr. Men style is accurate to a point yet it's still doctor who in style. Sure to delight both young and old fans of the doctor who series hehehe.
The Eighth Doctor offering very little by way of (televised) source material, this volume was a real chance for Hargreaves to exercise his imagination. Unfortunately this manifests largely in absentia. Readers need not persist beyond the cover illustration and the rainbow-cake planet.
What a hoot! The hubs and I are finally reading this series I bought for him at Xmas. Both of us being Whovians, and me being a librarian and fond of the quirky “Little Mr./Miss/Ms.” series, we are amused.
I'm sure this one isn't bad at all, but since I've only seen that one episode of his I'm very sure I missed some of the amusing tidbits (for example, why was there a 7 on the side of the boat? I assume there's a reason.). However, I did sit through all those terrible Silurian and Sea Devil episodes in the 70s (and beyond) so I was amused by them, at least. LOL, equally ugly indeed!
I’m not that familiar with the 8th. Doctor and this coloured my reading I’m sure. No personality traits on display but loved having Silurian and Sea Devils.
Very cute little book. Captures the authors very specific style while still capturing the style of Dr. Who. NB I would say the same for the entire series.
DR. EIGHTH Without companions the Doctor faces two adventures, the first involves his wooden sonic-screwdriver, the second involves two sets of distant cousins: Silurians and Sea Devils. ..
Part of the range of Roger Hargreaves Mr Men style books featuring the stars of Doctor Who, this time focusing on Paul McGanns 8th Doctor and a childish feud between the Silurians and the Sea Devils.
