Jung on Astrology brings together C. G. Jung's thoughts on astrology in a single volume for the first time, significantly adding to our understanding of Jung's work.
Jung's Collected Works, seminars, and letters contain numerous discussions of this ancient divinatory system, and Jung himself used astrological horoscopes as a diagnostic tool in his analytic practice. Understood in terms of his own psychology as a symbolic representation of the archetypes of the collective unconscious, Jung found in astrology a wealth of spiritual and psychological meaning and suggested it represents the "sum of all the psychological knowledge of antiquity."
The selections and editorial introductions by Safron Rossi and Keiron Le Grice address topics that were of critical importance to Jung--such as the archetypal symbolism in astrology, the precession of the equinoxes and astrological ages, astrology as a form of synchronicity and acausal correspondence, the qualitative nature of time, and the experience of astrological fate--allowing readers to assess astrology's place within the larger corpus of Jung's work and its value as a source of symbolic meaning for our time.
The book will be of great interest to analytical psychologists, Jungian psychotherapists and academics and students of depth psychology, Jungian and post-Jungian studies, as well as to astrologers and therapists of other orientations, especially transpersonal.
Carl Gustav Jung (/jʊŋ/; German: [ˈkarl ˈɡʊstaf jʊŋ]), often referred to as C. G. Jung, was a Swiss psychiatrist and psychotherapist who founded analytical psychology. Jung proposed and developed the concepts of extraversion and introversion; archetypes, and the collective unconscious. His work has been influential in psychiatry and in the study of religion, philosophy, archeology, anthropology, literature, and related fields. He was a prolific writer, many of whose works were not published until after his death.
The central concept of analytical psychology is individuation—the psychological process of integrating the opposites, including the conscious with the unconscious, while still maintaining their relative autonomy. Jung considered individuation to be the central process of human development.
Jung created some of the best known psychological concepts, including the archetype, the collective unconscious, the complex, and synchronicity. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), a popular psychometric instrument, has been developed from Jung's theory of psychological types.
Though he was a practising clinician and considered himself to be a scientist, much of his life's work was spent exploring tangential areas such as Eastern and Western philosophy, alchemy, astrology, and sociology, as well as literature and the arts. Jung's interest in philosophy and the occult led many to view him as a mystic, although his ambition was to be seen as a man of science. His influence on popular psychology, the "psychologization of religion", spirituality and the New Age movement has been immense.
Even though Jung's thoughts about astrology were, at times, confusing and contradictory, he highlighted some interesting historical facts about its evolution and practitioners, particularly up until the 17th century, when astrology was still regarded as a science and taught alongside astronomy at universities.
His main theory asserts that "the whole astro-mythology is at bottom nothing but psychology - unconscious psychology - projected into the heavens" and that "astrology has actually nothing to do with the stars but is the 5000-year-old psychology of antiquity and the Middle Ages." And he backs up this theory by tracing the astrology archetypes through myths, religious texts, various historical records, and even religious beliefs, symbols, and practices during his lifetime, which was very thought-provoking.
“All my writings may be considered tasks imposed from within; their source was a fateful compulsion. What i wrote were things that assailed me from within myself.”
“My evenings are taken up very largely with astrology. I make horoscopic calculations in order to find a clue to the core of psychological truth.”
Dari Bagian 4: Explanations of Astrology:
“Generalizing from his reflection on the signs, Jung concludes that the source of astrological meanings is not from the cosmos but from archetypes in the unconscious psyche, from the microcosm of human beings.”
Dari catatan Jung tanggal 19 November 1930, ”Visions I”
“Astrology is the projected psychology of the unconscious...”
And… I’ve been like this even before I heard about all the ish about astrology. I love being outspoken when I want to.
Who knows, huh. What a mystery honestly…
