Amazing Machines

Dazzling Diggers

Rate this book
Diggers are noisy, strong, and big. Diggers can carry and push and dig. Diggers have shovels to scoop and lift, blades that bulldoze, shunt, and shift. Sloshing and squelching, and smashing and bashing, the construction machinery does its work - manned by a friendly animal gang - in this lively picture book. Young children will adore it as will the adults who get to read aloud these irresistable rhymes

Aimed at small boys, this book is ok, but not overly informative or entertaining as it presents different kinds of digging equipment. The illustrations are ok, but not outstanding, with animal construction workers.

Wonderful picture book for babies through grade 1 with rhyming text and rhythm that doesn’t feel forced and appealing illustrations with animals operating a variety of digging machines such as bulldozers, excavators, loaders and backhoes. Author Tony Mitton also incorporates plenty of alliteration and onomatopoeic words that will have littles making big noises while learning about big machines. Mitton also uses higher level vocabulary such as shunt, gouge and hoist that are easy to understand with plenty of textual hints and pictorial clues. Sadly, with all the excellent vocabulary and even a page with pictures of the machines’ parts with actual names included, Mitton does not include of the names of those diggers even when it would have been easy to print them right next to their illustrations.

Highly recommended for home, school and public libraries!

This book describes what each of the working machines does and even more interesting they are driven by animals. It is bright and colorful with a lot of noisy sound that we could make outdoors using some of these diggers.

A very fun book with lots of construction vehicles making all kinds of noises. I could tell that a rabbit was driving one vehicle, but I could not tell if it was a rat or a shrew or something else that was driving the other. Not an important detail, but I was a little confused.

This is a tractor book I don’t mind reading over and over with my two year old son. The vocabulary is rich and the rhythm is memorable. My son loves “reading” along with me and is an expert on all things digger.

Recommended for 2-4 year olds.

While this book does a great job explaining all the different digger jobs and parts, my daughter and I just found it meh. Not the book, but the concept.

3.25⭐️ (Considering it's a book designed for parents to read to their toddlers, and I read this at the ripe age of 25... Nostalgia ya know!)

Children love rhyming and and it is a fun way to help children learn new words with their meanings. This book has great illustrations and explains to children different functions of construction machines. The glossary further helps children understand the different parts of machines and theur specific functions.

Extension
Provide children different models/toys of construction machines and let them identify the different parts. Then keep these toys in the science center and let them explore them during free play.

My 4-year-old isn't really into diggers so he didn't like this book as much as he liked the one on cars. But it was still informative and fun to read.

My son loves these books and loves this one as well. We have quite the collection now and since his dad runs heavy equipment this one was a must have.
