Running from a Rock Star

Rate this book
She’s a good-girl Sunday school teacher. He’s a bad boy rock god. What could possibly go wrong?

Scarlett Kelly is the poster child for responsible living. Growing up as the daughter of the town floozy, she’s made it her mission to be the exact opposite of her mother. So when she wakes up naked and hung over in bed with a bad-boy rock star, she bolts immediately. There’s just one problem: Scarlett’s bedmate is her new husband.

Gavin needs to repair his image or his music career will go down the tubes. He’s also just learned he has a son he never knew existed. He needs to settle down, and bribing his new wife to stay married may just fit everything into place.

Scarlett agrees to the ruse to help her family’s financial troubles even though she can hardly control herself around the rock star. As they search for Gavin’s son, will their unlikely matrimony give them exactly what they’ve been missing or send them packing?

I'm a born and raised Texas girl and am the multiple award-winning author of The Brides on the Run series--a fun, sexy, snarky, laugh-out-loud good time. If you don’t snort with laughter, then I haven’t done my job.

I'm also a wife, mother, and an actress/comedian. I used to think I could sing until someone paid me to stop. I took their money and kept on singing.

I love my family, all things Outlander, and puppies make me stupid happy. I can be found on Sundays during football season watching my beloved Houston Texans and trying not to let them break my heart.

This book isn’t as funny as it imagines itself, and the characters were generic.

I knew the wish fulfillment would be strong on this one going in. So I rolled with it and was having a good time. There's a lot of flavor with Scarlett and Gavin and surrounding folks. And Honey, Scarlett's aunt, was a riot. Nothing you can take seriously, but there were some good moments.

And then the villain showed up, twirled her mustache, and cackled a bit. I think she might have threatened the little dog Toto, too. She definitely threatened the family farm. And I just couldn't any more. Pulling back because, just, no, I realize that all the characters are a single trait and most of the plot goes away with a conversation and a little gumption. That had been tapping around behind my attention because to that point I was charmed by all the pretty colors.

I'm giving this a second star because I was having fun to that point. I'll probably even pick up another by the author, hoping she works out the villain thing better in other books. But this one is done at not quite halfway.

Not for me. I mean, he discovers he has a kid with OW. And she’s a virgin at 25 so it was a bit overkill with both in place. And then there was the unnecessary drama in the last 20% of the book. And the first 1/3 was dead boring. I came back to it over the course of a week where I read other books between because like I said, it wasn’t actually funny and made me fall asleep. After the 30% it did take my interest so I read it. I did sort of like both characters though because they were enjoyable as people.

The second book is really good though. It’s about their best friends and I really liked it.

I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHERE TO START, HOW DO YOU F*CK UP FAKE MARRIAGE TROPE SO BADLY

I mean, I knew I'd have issues with this book from the very first pages when the heroine starts a vicious slut-shaming cycle, calling herself "Slutty McSlut Slut" for sleeping (or so she thought) with a guy she barely knew. And really, the amount of times she calls herself - or other women - "trump", "slut", "hussy" or "whore" is staggering. I'm perfectly aware internalized sexism is a thing and all, BUT COME ON, how do you expect other people to respect you when you're bathing yourself in women-hating phrases all on your own.

I can't even count how many times I wanted to fling this book across the room - and please be aware this is coming from a person who willingly read book titled "Bearllionaire" just a week ago. The only reason I kept reading was the promise of second book and Luanne's and Jack's story because LAWYERS BABY.

First of all, the characters were either bland (the hero) or totally unlikeable (the heroine). Gavin was like your Typical Contemporary Hero™ with a few setting adjustments to Bad Boy Rock Star™. And some of the dynamic there felt like a total rip-off of Kristen Callihan's "Idol" (world famous but lost musician, taking a break from music after his bandmate and friend dies - it's slightly different but when I read it, it screamed Killian and Jax dynamic at me). Besides that, there were attempts at making Gavin a more complex character, with his backstory and a surprise baby sprung on him, but all I really got from him was how hung up he was on Scarlett taking the money HE OFFERED HER, it literally amounted to 95% of his thoughts.

Now onto Scarlett Kelly...I don't think I can come up with one positive thing to say about her and the way she was written. To me she boiled down to judgemental church-going, granny-panty-wearing Sunday school teacher who would do anything not to be compared to her late mother, "the town's hussy". And thus, she became a total hypocrite who would chastise Gavin for using the "F" word (because, apparently "To her, people who used it were intellectually lazy." - excuse me, I take a FUCKING offence to that) but then called some woman at the club who DARED to make a pass at her husband "skinny-assed, fake-boobed, cheap-perfumed whore who needed to be taught a lesson" (I guess that's her inner Sunday school teacher talking, right?).

Oh, btw, in the very same paragraph she'd say (with pride) things like "I am half redneck, sister. I will put my high-heeled shoe up your skinny butt before you know what hit you."

*lemme take a 5 minute break because I just threw up in my mouth a little*

(and let's not go into how ALL the women apart from Scarlett's and Gavin's immediate family/friends were either conniving bitches or sluts out to GET HER MAN or who wronged HER MAN in the past)

Which brings me to another thing that really put me off this book - how the setting and characters seemed like a lazily-drawn caricature of Southern folks. Like, I know the author is from Texas, born and raised, and my friend assured me she actually painted quite an accurate picture here but it still felt over-the-top to me with how Scarlett would say "oh lordy" and call her father "dad*y" ALL THE TIME and I mean it, it was ALL THE TIME, I NEED THIS WORD WIPED OUT OF ALL DICTIONARIES PEOPLE. And don't even get me started on her prideful speech on "yes, my whole family is packing a gun, it's Texas honey, babies come out of their mothers' wombs with guns here" and "it's my Second Amendment right, bitch". Should I even go into how twisted it is that apparently sleeping with a guy before marriage is a life-sentence offence in Scarlett's mind but shooting at reporters who are standing on your lawn is completely normal and acceptable?

Methinks not, my blood pressure is high enough as it is already.

When it comes to plot - romance was weak and based on instalove. Gavin's motivation for marrying Scarlett is basically "he knew he had to keep her" - she's not a puppy, ffs! Scarlett swoons over how badass Gavin looks with all the muscles and tattoos while playing his guitar. Then she realizes she loves him based on all that right before or right after (can't recall now) they have sex for the first time (probably because it's so wrong to have sex without feelings). Apart from that, plot was a string of random things flung together: book deal! scandal! fake marriage! blackmail! baby! more scandal!

And then they fight over nothing because Lack of Proper Communication is the best plot twist ever, get back after 5 pages of unnecessary drama and live happily ever after.

I surely hope Luanne's and Jack's story is at least a 3.5 star read because I simply deserve it after this.

Cute, light romantic comedy. Some of the situtaions were a bit short on the believability scale and they just seemed to go from one to the next. But, the ride was still a fun one.

Although Running From a Rockstar has received some great reviews, it didn't measure up for me and my tastes. I felt a lot of it was mediocre at best. Not bad but not great; kind of toeing the line of a good story.
The plot was fun and seems like it should be a cute, easy read. I found a lot of it to be choppy and contrived as well as a bit dull. It felt like the author was trying too hard during the funny scenes and flirty scenes. They didn't come off as effortless or organic.
I ended up skimming quite a bit because I was bored and not invested in the story. I considered DNFing a few times; not because it was bad but because I really didn't care about the characters, their relationship, or what was happening. I wanted to see it through though and skimming was the only way I saw myself finishing.
Even though this book didn't really do it for me, it is the author's debut book and I saw a lot of potential with the writing. I will give this author a try again in the future if she writes more books. I look forward to seeing what she comes up with and anticipate it getting better and better.

What a fun read! I really enjoyed Running From a Rock Star. It was flighty and lighthearted, but well written with good character development. This is a new to me author that I'll definitely be reading more of.

Scarlett never lets loose. Never! You could say she protects her good name as if the slightest tarnish would ruin her forever. But, when she let's go boy does she let go. After an interview that she was really wanting to go well doesn't she decides to have a few drinks. After all what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Right? That may have been true had her drinks not ended in marriage with a notorious rock star.

Gavin dropped out of his busy high profile life after the death of his best friend. Going through his friend's stuff Gavin finds out that he has a 2 year old son out there that he knew nothing about. Now he's on the search for his son and on a mission to clean up his image so he can be a dad that his son would be proud to have.

Scarlett and Gavin are so funny together. He's not the wild child that the world knows him to be. He has his moments but for the most part he's a good guy that just wants a normal life. Scarlett, on the other hand, is not the perfectly behaved girl that her little town knows her to be. Don't get me wrong she is but it's a constant struggle to keep the real her hidden and in control. She's not wanting to run wild but she is just a lot more human than she allows herself to show to the world. Together they are able to be themselves and it's so fun to read.

*AUDIOBOOK REVIEW*

When a sweet southern girl wakes up next to a tattooed rock star, it makes for a very interesting start to a story. What followed was a really good story involving all kind of romance goodness.

There were misunderstandings to be worked through and secrets revealed. Also there were plenty of wonderful family and great friends all throughout which I love.

I really liked both Gavin and Scarlett. I think they were really well developed characters with all the good points and flaws needed to make them interesting. It also kept them from being hard to connect with.

There was also a great cast of secondary characters made up of friends and family that played crucial roles in this story.

Not only did this book keep things exciting but the ending was exactly the kind I hope for. Plus I get the added bonus of having characters I hope to see get their own stories in future.

Really good!

This was such a good story. It had all the tropes - drunk wedding, rock star and children's book author, bad boy and virgin, secret baby. It wasn't dark and depressing given some of the contents like Gavin's best friend's death. It was an easy read with just the right touch of drama, lighthearted wit, and interesting storyline.

This was a light read. I loved the characters,it just needed to be a little less surface and it would have been perfect. Though I’m going add this if you need a palette cleanser this is a good one.

Scarlet and Gavin

I LOVED this! The writing is fun, fresh, and flirty! This was so much fun to read. We have straight laced Scarlet and bad boy rock star Gavin. They meet, drink, and marry in Vegas. They stay married to help Gavin's image and in turn Scarlet gets some money to help pay off her family's farm.

I love stories that start off as one thing and completely surprise. This story had way more depth and emotion than I anticipated. You feel everything these two have been through in their past and you feel how they connect on so many levels. You can almost pinpoint when they start to fall in love with each other.

"She owned him, body and soul. She freed the brokenness in him. Baptized and resurrected him with her sweetness, and made him a new man."

I also loved the side characters. You know the writing is amazing when you become emotionally connected to characters that aren't the main H and h.

And can I just say how much fun it would be to get Jack and Louann's story! That will be explosive!

I would rather jump off a cliff than read this book. The only reason i finished it was because i saw the reviews and ratings and kept hoping it’ll get better at some point. I really wanted to like this book since it had one of my most favorite tropes fake marriage and you can hardly go wrong with that.

I don’t even know where to start the girl was a hypocritical, slut shaming, red neck who thinks anyone who has sex is a hussy or “Slutty McSlut Slut” as she so eloquently put it but carrying guns is something to be proud of. First of all this was supposed to be a rom com where did all this even come from? Never mind, the guy couldn’t be more basic if he tried he’s a rockstar with lots of money, tattoos, good looks and wait for it ...mommy issues.

The story was senseless to put it mildly what was happening? Why was it happening? And when will it be over? I was considering doing my assignment rather than reading this. That says it all. I don’t know if the writer was trying to be funny but all I did was cringe.

I was given this book as an ARC, in return for an honest review! And oh how thankful I am! Scarlett & Gavin became a part of my life. I felt loss & sadness when I finished! Even though Scarlett & Gavin exited my daily life, they'll always be in my heart!

Cover=gorgeous!! I'll buy a copy just to have the cover to look at! This is a fun, romantic comedy that anyone can relate to (or at least their alter egos can). Jami's creativity is fantastic. I laughed out loud often during the read. The sex appeal and chemistry between Scarlett and Gavin was electrifying. This would make a fantastic Lifetime movie!

This book was so worth the read! I also love that it was set in Texas. I cannot wait for the next book in the series to come out. I know it will be as good as Running From A Rock Star! I can't recommend this book more! Invite Scarlett & Gavin into your life, today! It's a must buy!

Such a feel good book

I'm happy to have picked up this book as I needed something light, humourous, lovely yet with a dose of "oh my God, what's really gonna happen at the end with the nemesis's threats".
I loved Scarlet and Gavin's dynamic and the supporting cast was awesome. And the fact that the writing was flawless and fresh were the cherries on top of this cute lovely bookcake :D

I loved the premise, but it was too cookie cutter for me. I wanted fluff, but this was too fluff and predictable. The writing style did not work for me. The author tried to be cute and funny, but I found everything irritating especially the heroine. I usually love those types of heroines, but this one was annoying. Maybe it was just my mood. You may love it. My opinion and reading is subjective.

This is my first read by Jami Albright, but it certainly won’t be my last. This was so much fun. I laughed, I swooned, I fanned my face, and I worried over how they were going to fix the mess they were in. It felt very authentic considering the wacky world both the heroine and hero were dropped into, and I loved every single page. I wholeheartedly recommend this one to readers who enjoy romantic comedies. Can’t wait to start book two and see two lawyers go head-to-head! Should be fun!

3.5 Stars

Overall Rating ★★★★
Plot ★★★★
Humor ★★★★
Characters & Character Development ★★★
Narration ★★★

Story: This was a pretty good story. I found some similarities between this story and another one where the main female character gets drunk and marries a rock star. I can't say that I loved all of it. It drives me crazy when a person is being taken advantage of by others in the book. Therefore, the whole situation with Poppy annoyed the hell out of me. Also the situation with the company that she was going to work with about her books. At times Scarlett seemed to have attitude and behave as though she doesn't take people's crap. At other times, it seemed she had no backbone at all. Gavin was a good character despite his issues. I can't say that there was anything that made me love this story. The many part of Scarlett's story line was her business with that company. After she pretty much told them to F off, I was thinking that she'd get another deal with another company but we never hear of it again. Also, I didn't even feel like her agent was any use to her.

Narration: Jennifer Grace. Narration was okay.

Although there were things that happened that were predictable, I still found it cute and funny. It was an easy audiobook to listen to.

One thing I did find interesting and maybe I'm wrong, but when Poppy sends the blackmail material to Louann, I thought that made no sense. Louanne being an attorney and this being a felony would have to report it to the authorities as an officer of the court, right?

Anyway, it's my first time with this author's material and I am interested in reading the next book in the series.

Quick, fun and a delightful read. Mix a country girl from Texas (a virgin, too) with a tatted gorgeous rock star and wild night in Las Vegas and a wedding performed by Elvis -- you got a rom-com filled with laughs and a cast of crazy characters from two years old to seventy. There are some ups and downs to level it all out with a nice blend of the good feels, too.

The beginning of this worked for me but then it crossed over into an extremely rushed grab bag of every romance trope and storyline possible. And there are also a few things I didn’t love that probably wouldn’t be written the way they are if it had been released in 2022 ~ the gun/Texas conversation and some offhand comments about China. I would definitely be willing to try one of the author’s newer books though to see how she has grown.

Jami Albright is a new to me author, and I'm so glad to found her. Running From A Rock Star was a quirky fun read. With great banter between characters and we all should have a Honey in our lives.

This book was given to me from the Author, because Amazon and my cc had a few problems with each other. Human-beings... This author gifted me this book, because I couldn't buy it immediately on amazon. There is a limit of how amazing a person can be, and she definitely overstepped it!! :D

This down here, is my review:

The thing about this book is, that there is no long foreplay. Before you even know, you're fully in it. As promised is this all in all, full with wit and remarkable characters - So, you get what you hoped for.

And people let me tell you something... lately I've (Sorry in advance for my use of words) been reading a lot of shit. Even books from renowned authors were crappy as fuck. Really, for a long time I only held bad books in my hands.
And then suddenly I read a really good book last week and was afraid, that my bad-books-only-time would come again.... IT DID NOT! So this book, from a new author was better than few famous one's. If that is not a reason to just try her book - I don't know either, loveliiiess.

Of course, there we're some things I would have changed - but nothing real big. :)
For example the wit decreased after the first half a little bit. I did not mind it, but well I hoped that the author would find more ways to keep the wit on board, even then when the story got darker. Yeah it gets darker and tense, but it's freaking entertaining.
And the story has a lot of cliché going on, even though the blurb promised us a unlikely story. But who cares? Really, I think almost every woman loves to read cliché-love-stories here and there.

And god, I loved all the characters - let's be honest: I wont think about them in my leisure-time, but while reading they all made the story better. They gave this book that little something, to make it better. And I liked Gavin and Honey a little too much, haha.

It's a perfekt Sunday book. Grab some orange-juice, look for a comfy place and just start reading. It's fulfilled with entertainment, lot's of love, the past, the future, family and other things, which you come to appreciate.

I don't know how to write books... but I for sure know how to gush over one, if it was good. And meeeen. this one was good! :D A quirky, funny and complete love story. + It's a rockstar-story... I know you want to read it. :p

“I could go to jail for the things I want to do to you. I’m hanging on by a thread here, Scarlett.”

Who should read this fine xxx of a story?
People, who love rockstar-books
People, who loved lovestruck by Lila Monroe
People, who loved the Stage Dive Series from Kylie Scott
And People, who loved the Mayhem Series from Jamie Shaw

To be honest, these listed books and series are on a whole nother level...
This book is really from a author, who just started... It's worth a chance :)
If you loved the up-listed books, you will like this one! Cuz, it's sweet, funny and dark-"themed" at the same time.

My Rating:
3.4 out of 5 Stars!!
I can't wait for her next book. I hope it's about Luanne and Jack. I know this one was a book with Gavin and Scarlett as protagonists, but I still was more intrigued by Luanne and Jack's story. #guilty
