Rebecca’s older sisters took the ton by storm while she herself has failed to attract a suitor in four Seasons. Miles is pondering his urgent need for a wife when Rebecca lands in his lap in the nave of Bath Abbey. A match between them seems ordained by the heavens… except for the little matter of his past history with her sisters. Originally published in 2015 in Sweet Summer Kisses.
Susana has always had stories in her head waiting to come out, especially when she learned to read and her imagination began to soar. Voracious reading led to a passion for writing, and her fascination with romance and people of the past landed her firmly in the field of historical romance.
A teacher in her former life, Susana lives in Toledo, Ohio in the summer and central Florida in the winter. She is a member of the Central Florida Romance Writers and the Beau Monde chapters of RWA and Maumee Valley Romance Inc.
Sweet. Nice H. Nice h. Pretty much nice everyone except one rude sister who was a bit of a conniver. There wasn't much story to it. Slow reading. A soft 3.
The Third MacPherson Sister is a clean Regency romance novella by Susana Ellis. It's the last story in the Sweet Summer Kisses collection. The story opens in London in May of 1817.
Rebecca MacPherson, 22, would rather be home reading a book than at a ball. She is the youngest of three sisters. Her other sisters, Arabella and Alice, are twins and were considered "diamonds" in their joint season. They both married earls. Rebecca is much shorter than they are, and is not fashionably slim. She is not what is considered an accomplished young lady, is clumsy, and "had only her connections and fortune to recommend her." She feels that she compares unfavorably to her sisters. The fact that it is her fourth season and she still hasn't "taken" doesn't do much to dispel that point of view.
Miles Framingham, Duke of Aylesbury, is in Bath, Somerset. He's there with his consumptive mother at the advice of her physician. They're hoping regular soaks in the hot springs will improve her discomfort. Miles is thirty, and his mother has hinted that he should marry and have children before she dies. She has a life expectancy of two years, which doesn't give him much time at all... Not to mention that he doesn't want to settle down yet.
Near the beginning of the tale, the duke is contemplating his mother's request while sitting on a bench outside, viewing the stained glass window of St. George's church. A group of tourists comes by to view the window and crowds in front of him. Who but our heroine Rebecca MacPherson falls into his lap? And such an improper introduction for Miles and Rebecca! Their very first conversation is surprisingly open and fun, covering several topics.
What I liked:
*I really enjoyed the conversation between Miles and Rebecca. Fun dialogue is my favorite part of any romance novel.
*The hero and heroine were very likable, which I consider a must!
What I didn't like:
There's really nothing, but I had two observations:
*Miles is 28, and a couple of pages later, he's 30! A couple of chapters later, he's still 30.
*Not a dislike, but it kicked me out of the story: The title of the Slippery Pig Inn had me chuckling. I don't know if that was intentional or not.
I'd strongly recommend this to fans of clean Regency romance. I'm going to put another Susana Ellis novella on my "to read" list. I'd like to see her write more!
I loved this book. It is a lovely, witty sweet romance that I read in one evening. Ellis does a masterful job of creating characters that come to life and feel vulnerable and relatable. I adored the heroine Rebecca MacPherson. She is not the typical Regency heroine - tall, beautiful and willowy, but is short, a bit on the heavy side and clumsy...so real, and so likable. I enjoyed watching her romance bloom with Miles Framingham, The Duke of Aylesbury. This is a sweet romance with barely a kiss in it, but such a great development of a relationship that it doesn’t matter. I won this book in a giveaway.
This was a straightforward, no angst story that was sweet and charming. It was short so there wasn't a ton of depth, but it was still entertaining and the characters were likable. It was fun to read a 'nice girl gets a nice guy' story, which don't often have enough meat for a longer novel, but it worked excellent in this format. I enjoyed the little bite that I read in a day.
The duke was kind to his mother, the sisters had their flaws and they worked through them, and the characters were nice and honest with each other. How lovely :)
I throughly enjoyed this book about a young lady who thinks that her self worth does not measure up to her older sister’s until she meets the duke who shows her who truly values her for her self. I loved the epilogue.
Susana Ellis, with her sweet novella, 'The Third MacPherson Sister,' literally throws Rebecca MacPherson into the lap of Miles Framingham, The Duke of Aylesbury, while both wait for their mothers to take the waters of Bath. The Duke determines that he needs to find a wife and plans to give his mother grandchildren before she dies of consumption. The dowager's doctor has given her two years at most.
The Duke finds himself amused and entertained by Rebecca's bubbly personality. Miss MacPherson finds herself attracted to him, but her first Season was a dismal failure. Rebecca feels she compares poorly to her twins sister, and that, combined with the failure of her Season, she feels puts the Duke beyond her reach. To Rebecca's thinking, no one is or will be interested in her, and before long she will be on the shelf.
After spending the day at the waters and sharing brief details of her family she and the Duke share a carriage home. On a whim, she leaves him with her address. Rebecca never expected a visit. But the Duke recalls her family and the Duke remembers her sisters very vividly. In fact, he dated one sister and has never forgotten the embarrassment he suffered at the hands of the twins. He decides to visit Rebecca, and spends time with her. But is it attraction or revenge that motivates the Duke?
I enjoyed this short novella. Ms. Ellis supports her characters with great character development. You feel like you know them. Her storyline is plausible — for almost any day or era. You can almost feel the anguish that Rebecca feels produced by her attraction to the Duke and her feelings of self doubt. This is paced well and very well written.
This story had one of my favorite meet cutes in it. Our heroine, Rebecca quite literally falls into the lap of Miles. They have such an adorable attraction to each other. It's not completely sexual, it's more on an intellectual level and their ability to make each other smile.
Rebecca, the third MacPherson sister, is not that popular. She is not as radiant and charming as her sisters were. Considered practically on the shelf, she has accepted the fact that she might not marry.
Miles on the other hand, has a duty to perform. As a Duke, he is expected to find a wife and have her bear children. His mother is ailing and she wants to see her Grandchildren.
However, Miles has a secret. After meeting Rebecca and figuring out who her family is, he is torn between telling her his history with her sisters and marrying her. He does underestimate Rebecca's feelings for him and her kind nature.
I loved both characters. Rebecca wasn't perfect (according to the Ton) but her personality was so sweet and Miles was attracted to her for all the right reasons. They had a lot in common and that is what fueled their romance. Such a heartwarming aspect to read and I enjoyed this immensely.
All ends well with the sweet HEA. It was the perfect story to read in one sitting.
I read this story when it was released as part of the Sweet Summer Kisses box set. When Rebecca first stumbles into Miles she has such a lack of confidence I herself and her appearance she doesn't think he could really be interested in her. Miles has a tainted history with Rebecca's older sisters and wonders if his new love will trust him enough to marry him. This is a heartfelt story that I thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend.
This is such a sweet novella. I loved that Rebecca met Miles when she landed in his lap! This is the story of a very comfortable friendship that grew into much more. Truth and trust were at their core of their relationship. Their mothers conspiring behind their backs was fun and not so subtle. I enjoyed the beginning, the ending and everything in between. It's a short read and one that will make you smile .
I found this to be a nice read. The characters were well-defined and their emotional baggage was clearly understandable. It was pleasant to read of people who were amiable and enjoyed each other's company and had the strength of character to choose to believe the best about one another, despite the secrets that were revealed under less-than-desirable circumstances.
I noticed the the timelines were off in the book but it could easily be overlooked if you don't pay too close attention. It wasn't important much anyways. It was a lovely Regency Romance. A clean read. I liked the characters. The story was told well for being so short.
A great read,I love the characters of Rebecca and Miles, their interactions with each other are just so darn cute it's impossible not to love these two.
Poor Rebecca, being the third sister and not as beautiful as they. This is a warm, affectionate and fun story. I really enjoyed it. For me personally it was to short. But the author used the characters and plot to good effect, keeping it interesting. It is an easy, clean read. I highly recommend this book.
