Includes various stories: Hellcity by Alan Martin and Jamie Hewlitt; Grendel: Devil's Whisper by James Robinson and D'Israeli and The Funeral by Andrew Strickland and Richard Barker. There is a Moebius Portfolio also. All the interior pages are printed in black and white.
I can't imagine what the editors of this fourth book of A1 were thinking: the front cover is a nightmarish battling-robots image from Simon Bisley; but the back cover is a remarkably lovely and light-handed profile of some sort of aeronaut by the (now) late, great Moebius, who's paid tribute inside with several pieces from the master. The Moebius stuff is all typically nice: a reprint of a Incal story, 'In the Heart of the Impregnable Bunker'; some sketchbook pages loosely linked together to suggest a bit of a story; and an amusing interview illustrated by the man himself. There's another Glenn Fabry 'Bricktop' chapter, more Bojeffries madness from Alan Moore and Steve Parkhouse, another fun piece from Alan Martin and Jamie Hewlett called 'Hell City,' as well as a new art-centred story by Graham Marks and John Bolton (tribute this time to Arcimboldo). Surprises in this volume are a fine new Grendel story ('Devil's Whisper') from James Robinson and D'Israeli and a Dalgoda piece called 'The Hero of the Tale' from Jan Strnad and lazily drawn by Kevin Nowlan. There are a couple other just-acceptable items, as well, with no absolute duds this time around. A solid entry in the series.
