Frida Kahlo Masterpieces of Art

Rate this book
The painful, exquisite art of Mexico's favourite artist was a product of immense physical pain, and an emotional tumultuous life. The new book features the range and power of her heavily autobiographical work, from the early, disturbing explorations of personal suffering to the more dulled, painkiller-drenched paintings of her later life.

It's hard to believe that Mexican artist Frida Kahlo was relatively unknown outisde of her own country until the 1980s. Today her paintings can be seen on everything from handbags & cushions to the bar of my bath soap (Monkey Fresh! Monkey Clean!) & even the cover of my mobile phone case.
This excellent collection of her work, while by no means definitive is still outstanding. The first 30 pages give a concise, yet informative, story of her life & the rest of the book is taken up with her work. This is a wonderfully illustrated book about an artist who overcame tragedy & chose to paint her own reality. What a legend she was!

All I knew about Frida before was that she was Mexican, she had gorgeous eyebrows and that she made beautiful and impactful art. This book told me about her life, her love, her pains and sufferings. And each part of her was expressed by her art. I could see everything, every piece of her soul interpreted into her paintings. Her art was so honest and raw, I could feel everything she gave into it. This book did such a good job in connecting Frida's story to her art.

First half of the book contained Frida’s life story, and let me tell you, it was everything but easy life. The text was accompanied by some of her paintings and there were references to other paintings, which were in the second part of the book.

I’m really glad I read this book and had the opportunity to get to know better this incredible strong woman and artist. Her art made me feel so many emotions, and it was just on the pages of this book. Now all I want to do it go, stand before her paintings and just admire.

I love this art book series. The right amount of biographical information and analysis of Frida Kahlo's art followed by a large number of reproductions, organised to reflect the main themes of her work.

there’s such a sadness and torment to frida - i admire her greatly for her work, but the lack of proper medical care of the time & the disgraceful nature that is diego makes me feel such sadness and a wish for her that she could have really been fulfilled because despite all the amazing works she put out im not sure she was, she was making due with some rotten circumstances and doing the best she could.

amazing to have references to all her remarkable paintings. & loved getting to see the still-life works she did at the end of her life!

Covers the story of this famous Mexican artist and all her accidents and injuries along with the development of her artistic ability. A lot is made of her relationship with Diego Rivera and their marriage, divorce and remarriage plus the many affairs each had over the course of her life. The full page paintings in the second half are well labelled but not the smaller ones in her life's story at the beginning.

Embarrassingly Kahlo is an artist I knew very little about, just that she was a mexican artist whose revolutionary legacy had been heavily commercialised / gentrified .
Her autobiography gripped me, and I spent a long time with each painting.

It was such a great depiction of the life of Frida Kahlo and her amazing work. I literally could not put this book down and will no doubt be picking it back up again.
