The Ghost of You and Me

Rate this book
How do you tell someone who hates you and blames you for the death of his best friend that you miss him?

From the bestselling teen and young adult author of Cinder & Ella comes a new heart-wrenching romance sure to bring all the feels.

The tragic death of Spencer Schott unravels the lives of the two people he loved most—his girlfriend, Bailey, and his best friend, Wes. Secrets and guilt from that fateful night keep both Bailey and Wes from overcoming Spencer’s loss and moving on with their lives.

Now, nearly a year later, both Bailey and Wes are still so broken over what happened that Spencer can’t find peace in the afterlife. In order to put his soul to rest, he’s given one chance to come back and set things right...even if that means setting up his girlfriend with his best friend.

With the emotional resonance of Jellicoe Road and the magical realism of The Lovely Bones, The Ghost of You and Me is a story about overcoming grief, finding redemption for past mistakes, and the healing power of friendship and love. Fans of John Green, Sarah Dessen, and Nicholas Sparks are sure to love this haunting new tale from Kelly Oram.

This is a clean young adult romance stand alone novel that reads like contemporary drama romance and has just a touch of magical realism.

meh.
I almost cried a few times, but I really wasn't too attached.

I found the premise a little too similar to Being Jamie Baker, also by this author, where the protagonist's boyfriend is killed in some car-related accident after a fight with said protagonist then protagonist and everyone else blames the protagonist.
It had the same foundation. Obviously, both books progressed way differently, but I must say I thoroughly prefer the Jamie Baker series.

I can see how people may fall in love with this one. I personally did not. Most of the characters, save for Wes, fell flat for me.
It was very emotional, but it wasn't because I was attached to any of the characters.
That being said, I wish we got to know some of our side characters a little better.
Most of them were very cut and paste.
Trisha is the same cookie-cutter bitch from every other book ever.

But I will say one thing; Kelly knows how to write a detestable character. In this book and every other book of hers that had a bitchy character, all I wanted to do was slap the character.
I will also say I like it waaaay more when Kelly throws in a redemption arc for that character. Sadly, that was not the case for Trisha.

To begin with, I have to say that while I think Kelly Oram is an amazingly gifted writer, after her last book I had about given up on reading her books. I'm a girl that prefers her books clean- free from swearing and sexual content and Kelly really pushes that boundary for me. (yes, I realize that this is a personal preference and one not shared by everyone) Then I saw the blurb for this book and it says "clean" and I debated because I really wanted to read this book and I really wanted to love it but I was unsure based on all my previous experiences with her books. I decided to give it one more shot because, hello? It's Kelly Oram. And did I mention that I think she is an amazing writer? She has a gift for making characters seem so real and vibrant in stories that completely suck you in.

This story is a bit unlike any of Kelly's others. I loved the grittier, messier, more complicated feelings and emotions from both Bailey and Wes. Feelings of loss, guilt, anger and misunderstanding were swirling around with love, trust, forgiveness and overcoming. As the story unfolds, bit by bit, I was completely taken with Bailey, Wes and yes, even Spencer the ghost. I thought there was an excellent balance between the heavier issues and the lighter side of friendship, high school and young love. This book definitely kept me engaged- my interest, and my feelings. I love when that happens in a book!

I'm so glad I read this book! It was one of the better ones I've read this month which is saying something because June has been an awesome review month. :)

Content: references to teenage party with drinking, mild innuendo

- I received a copy of this book in conjunction with this review tour. All opinions expressed are my own.

Bailey still can't get over the death of her boyfriend Spencer a year after it happened.
Spencer can't rest in the afterlife knowing that Bailey still misses him so much. So what does he do?
He comes back in ghost form to help her move on. His idea of moving on? Setting her up with his best friend, who used to be HER best friend.
Confused?
Good. Go read the book, then we'll talk ;)

The Ghost of You and Me proves, yet again, why Kelly Oram is my favorite YA author. I was sucked into the story from the first paragraph, reading well into the night with no concern for how tired I'll be the next day; this author and her stories do that to me!
I loved the romance in this book (all of them) and how real they seemed.
Bailey is not your typical insecure MC. On the contrary, she's one of the pretty, popular girls who people love to watch her every move. So when her boyfriend dies, the geeky Spencer, everyone expects her to be sad, yes, but they also expect her to get over it--as if it were that easy to get over the death of a loved one.
Slowly but surely, her friends lose patience with her and Bailey finds herself isolated--that is until Ghost Spencer shows up to help her, of course.
I loved loved loved their relationship (kinda bummed that he died before the start of the book, though). I especially liked how loyal they both were. Even though we only got glimpses of the two of them together, it was enough for me to get attached to the idea of them, and that maybe, possibly caused me to tear up a couple of times (I said possibly! I'm not confirming or denying anything!)
I have to talk about sexy Wes, who could be interpreted as a jerk if you don't look too closely. Wes practically broke my heart every time he appeared on the page. I KNEW there had to be a deeper reason for his distance, and I was very happy to be right.
Special mention goes to Charlotte, the coolest friend ever!! (and my favorite character).
Finally, I have to say that this is more than another fluffy romance (not that there's anything wrong with fluffy romances, I LIVE for those). This book goes a bit deeper than that by showing you that a person should never take things at face value because there's always something you don't know; the eye can't see everything.
Would recommend to ALL.

I gotta say, I was so falling for Wes from the beginning. From when they were kids, there was something that made me choose him over Spencer. It was probably the fact that Bailey got to kiss Spencer first (when they were smaller kids and with spin the bottle) and I wanted the underdog. Although underdog is probably not accurate. Wes was the better looking of the two of them and not as geeky as his best friend Spencer. As the book moves forward, my heart went to him more and more!

Spencer was full of happiness in the afterlife. He loved his friends and he came back to help his friend, Wes. We don’t have all the information of what happened that night of his death. Little by little that information comes out to give the full picture of what happened. And it will break your heart when it all comes out!

You are also given that something is wrong with Wes, but you don’t know what.

Bailey has been in a “coma” for a year since Spencer’s death. Just barely living. Everyone has tiptoed around her. When Spencer shows up, she listens to him and is happy that he is there even though he is non corporeal. He tells her he is here to help Wes. He wants Bailey to be there for Wes. She tries but he seems very agitated around her. They end up together on an internship at the hospital for school. At times, he is nice. At other times, he is agitated and it is driving Bailey crazy. She thinks it’s hopeless. Spencer gives her things to do for Wes that he won’t reveal what they mean.

When her so called “friends” yell at her and dump her because of the way she is not interacting and seemingly selfishness, she wakes up. She finds a new friend and her sister’s relationship is improving. But the agony of my heart watching Wes’s life doesn’t get better until the very end.

Bailey didn’t seem self absorbing to me. She just dealt with the death as best as a teenager could. Wes was homeschooled so we don’t see much of him except for flashbacks and when they are together. He was an enigma to me. I wasn’t sure how life was for him until towards the end and then I started crying with his life as we were given it! I wanted Bailey to push harder to be there more for him but he certainly didn’t make it easy for her.

Overall, I loved this story. I loved what Spencer did for both of them! I loved the characters! I loved Bailey’s family and Wes’s mom! I absolutely loved the ending!

If you like stories of the afterlife, love, stupid teenagers, true friends, dying, dances, band, buses, and matchmakers then this might be for you!

The Ghost of You and Me is one of the most heartbreaking but beautiful stories, I have read in a really long time.

Bailey has lost someone that meant the world to her. The one true person in her life that she loved so deeply. She has been in a haze for over a year. Being numb to the whole world. But something happens, that changes everything. It has been awhile since I’ve cried and felt a deep connection to a character. This story is full of hope, even when you are at your lowest point.

"He went to heaven, and he took my heart with him."

Kelly is the queen of YA Novels and if you’ve never heard of her, you’re really missing out. This story touched me in lots of ways. But being the good book reviewer that I’ am. I’m not going to give everything away. Just know, that it will have you in tears. And if you’re anything like me, you’ll cry yourself the whole way through. Watching the changes that Bailey goes through and everything she overcomes, it’s inspiring in a sense. Losing someone isn’t easy, it never will be. Because they are truly gone.

Overall, it’s a 5 HUGE Boundless Stars from me. Kelly did something wonderful with this story. It’s topics that are hard, but it’s written in such a poignant and beautiful way.

This book was very moving. I felt a deep connection to all the characters and even though I didn't always like their attitude or their choices, I understood completely where they were coming from and their loss and loneliness. I love that it had a happy ending. It was one of my favorite Kelly Oram books.

Okay, so I'm not going to lie. I wrote this really awesome review about this book and then something goes wrong on my Goodreads and it ends up not saving a single word of my really awesome review. So, now I'm completely fed up with my laptop/phone and I don't really want to write my review all over again. Here's a really shitty review now: enjoy.

I'm not even going to hide spoilers now so don't read this review if you want to read this book. So, Bailey and her two best friends Spencer and Wes sort of had a thing for each other. They were completely inseparable when they were children until the day they were at a party and played spin the bottle. Since that night Spencer and Bailey were inseparable and started officially dating. Then something happens along the way and Spencer gets completely wasted and crashes his car into a tree. He ends up dying and then basically haunting the shit out of Bailey and Wes because he wants them to get over the accident and to move on. He's tired of them being depressed and not living.

Now I liked Bailey after the first couple of chapters because I thought she was super annoying. Her sister was super annoying (their "friendship" kind of reminded me of the sisters in the movie "10 things I hate about you"). Then there are Bailey's friends who were completely rude about said things like "I'm so happy that you chose the nerdy guy over the hot guy." It made me want to bitch slap them. I mean, come on they were all best friends at one point (Spencer, Wes, and Bailey). She obviously had a crush on the both of them for different reasons and they mutually had a crush on her. Of course their friendship changed when Bailey and Spencer started dating.

I actually kind of liked their relationship too (Spencer and Bailey). Because they were each others first kiss and everything. It was sad that he died before their third anniversary but he shouldn't have been drunk driving. Someone should have stopped him and no one did. I did like Bailey and Wes too because they were different. However, I am kind of sick of love triangles in books and The Ghost of You and Me sort of had that going, even though Spencer was dead. But he did come back and sort of instigated their relationship--in a way.

I like Kelly Oram books so this didn't totally ruin her for me.

Sorry for a crappy review :(

The Ghost of You and Me had so many feels. It was like an emotional rollercoaster. One minute you'd be happy because of something that was happening and then the next minute it would be intense.

I liked how this story played out. Bailey's boyfriend, Spencer dies but he comes back as a ghost to try to help fix things that changed from the last year since he died. I liked Spencer a lot. It was obvious that he cared about Bailey. Wes grew on me in the end. I also liked Charlotte and Julia. The characters I didn't like were Bailey's old friends. They seemed very insensitive about her problems so it was nice to see Bailey make one true friend in the end.

I really don't want to say too much about this book because I don't want to spoil it, but it is definitely an enjoyable read. It was a five star read. Kelly Oram is becoming one of my favorite authors. I finished this book in about two days. (Fun fact: I started this book during the solar eclipse when I didn't have the glasses on. That was my way of not looking directly at the sun. ;) )

This YA story has a unique love triangle in it. Three friends (Wes, Spencer, and Bailey) have hung out since elementary school. Spencer and Bailey have been in a romantic relationship since they were 14, but when Spencer dies, it thrusts Bailey into a spiraling depression she can’t climb out of. What hurts most is that she knows Wes blames her for Spencer’s death. She withdraws from friends, family, and life for a year, but as she gets visited by her dead boyfriend’s ‘ghost,’ she is pushed to reach out to Wes and become friends again after their long estrangement. This heart-tugging story moved along at a fairly steady pace. There was tons of character growth and enlightenment along the way. There are humorous moments that made me laugh, as well as sad ones that made me frown. I always enjoy Oram’s stories. She writes awesome YA stories that really yank you through the pages, and tug at your heart. The paranormal element in this story was handled well, and it actually adds the comic relief needed to break up the tension. I loved it.

Bailey lost her boyfriend/best friend a year ago, and she lost her other best friend as well. Things aren't going so great with her, she's been suffering from a horrible case of depression, and she doesn't know how to move forward from here. But with the help of a new friend, her doctor's and teachers they help to move forward. And when she starts seeing her dead boyfriend's ghost things get a little crazy, especially when the other boy she ever loved has come back into the picture.

This book was super emotional. I cried during the whole thing. It was really good though, even if it was sad. The characters are interesting, and you can really feel the emotions that they are going through. And the plot is super good too, and it adds a little bit of supernatural to this other wise sad contemporary story. I highly recommend this book for an emotional read, but be prepared to cry.

To be honest, this was a bit of a skim-read for me. It's not that it's a bad book, rather it's not a "me" book, not exactly what I expected. I knew there'd be a sort of love triangle, but I expected it to be more like, moving on after the death of the MC's ex-boyfriend, instead of the whole "I've always been in love with both of them" thing. Still cute, still enjoyable - for god's sake, this is Kelly Oram, she always delivers that - but not very outstanding in any way, unfortunately. Still would recommend for fans of a big of angst with a cute romance, misunderstandings and love triangles.

"Love is as individual as snowflakes. It's all snow, but when you separate it and break it down, it's unique."

This book is heartbreaking and poignant, and made me cry, and if someone else had written it I probably wouldn't have loved it so much.

Kelly Oram's writing elevates any tale to a level that is difficult to achieve.

So thank you Kelly for making me cry, and for introducing me to the latest characters in your head.

I would like to thank Kelly Oram for gifting me this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

To start off, I’m going to just fangirl for a second! I am totally biased when it comes to this author. There is not a book of hers that I have not loved. She has a very unique way of writing different genres but will also put in one little sentence that draws all of her books together. Whether she is writing romcom, paranormal, or rip your heart out HEA romances you will not be disappointed in her work.

Ok, on to the book. Oh my heck!!! If you are looking for a book with lots of feels…. This is it! The Ghost of You and Me takes you on an emotional roller coaster between three best friends who not only share a special friendship in life but in death as well. This is one of those books that have you rooting for the guy to get the girl but at the same time feeling heartbroken about the “other” guy loosing the girl.

As the blurb said, this is a story about overcoming grief, finding redemption for past mistakes, and the healing power of friendship and love. I’d like to add that there is also some laugh out loud moments that help to balance out the emotional ones.

I absolutely love every one of her main characters in this story. I loved the easy going relationship that Spencer and Bailey share and also the love they have for each other that reach beyond the grave. I loved the secret love that Wes harbors for Bailey and the fact that everyone else can see it but her. I love how they all met as kids and fell for each other then. The secret pact between the boys was so sweet and how one game of spin the bottle changed or determined their future.

As with all of her books, they are perfect for teen readers all the way to adult. She’s a pretty clean writer and one that I let my own teen daughter read. This book is so worth the read.

The Ghost of You and Me is a story full of emotion that explores the themes of grief and forgiveness. The paranormal aspect of the book was done in such a way that made you utterly love Bailey's boyfriend, Spencer, who had died the previous year. Spencer, the ghost, has come back to help his two best friends heal and find love again. The back story of the three friends, Bailey, Spencer and Wes is so sweet, but heart breaking at the same time. As the story progresses and you find out more about them and how Spencer died in an accident, you realize how much they all were hurting and should have communicated with each other way before Spencer died.

I love Kelly Oram's stories and how she always hits a home run when it comes to the emotional journey of her characters. Funny enough, one of my favorite characters wasn't one of the three already mentioned, but Bailey's new friend Charlotte who brought such loyalty and strength to their friendship. This is a high school story full of some of the more familiar cliches of what it means to be popular and peer pressure and it also rises above those same themes by exploring the aspects of being selfless and dealing with grief.

This story is clean and for anyone 16+ who enjoy reading about love, romance, forgiveness and letting go. I know I enjoyed this book and was satisfied with how it ended.

5⭐️'s alllll the way.
There is so much heart, soul and emotion put into this story. 3 high school friends so deeply intertwined since they were nine years old, when one is killed in a tragic accident after an argument , he comes back in spirit to help the other two see that what happened that night wasn't their fault. I guess that's how this story is so different from others. Usually the main characters suffer from guilt throughout the book trying to find a way to live without it where in "The Ghost Of Us" the person that was wronged comes back to make things right in order for his friends to be able to find happiness again and forgive themselves. This book is all about love, healing and selflessness in the most heart felting ways.

I liked it...It had a good story line and fun characters (Spencer) but it pushed the "clean" statement too far I think. I had read the first chapter and decided I wasn't going to read more than looked at goodreads which assured me it was supposed to be clean, so kept reading. While there wasn't major stuff in there it was just enough that I didn't consider it clean or one I would want my teen daughter to read. It was an interesting story, just wished it had been cleaner.

Moral Note: Some mild/heavy innuendos - teen drinking/partying - some language (1 "B", a few hecks, and a$$) - some heavy topics (ex: Suicide, bullying, etc)

I don't know how to rate this. It was a nice read. I laughed and I cried. The two main characters had their flaws and I liked they weren't all perfect.
Spencer's ghost was hilarious sometimes.
But I didn't like how clueless Bay was sometimes. I mean - it was freaking obvious, girl!
I really appreciate that this book was mainly about overcoming one's grief after losing somebody important.

And I guess I'll have to read V is for Virgin, because of all the talk of its main character both here and in Happily Ever After. :D

This was such an incredible rollercoaster of emotions. I instantly liked Bailey and my heart broke for her in the first couple of chapters. Oram dealt with grief in such a realistic way with its ups and downs and the feeling of guilt...very well done. I laughed with these characters; I cried with these characters.... I really liked the complexity between the three main characters and how their friendships with each other each had a different focus. I also really enjoyed the side characters - they honestly added so much more to the story. Oram knows how to write hard hitting stories with a very uplifting and hopeful message.

Bailey had two best friends, Spencer and Wes. When they were children they were inseparable. However, their relationship changed drastically when Bailey and Spencer became a couple. Spencer was always in the middle. Wes remained his best friend, but Bailey was the love of his life and it was difficult to keep them both happy. On a tragic night Spencer died and now Bailey and Wes are broken people. They blame themselves and think they're responsible for his death. After almost a year they still haven't been able to heal, not even a little, and Bailey and Wes don't even talk to each other anymore.

Spencer can't cross over to the other side before he helps his friends to start living their lives again. In order to do that he comes back as a ghost and starts working on a plan to restore Wes and Bailey's friendship. They need each other to survive, but the rift between them is so big that it won't be easy to mend. Will Spencer succeed or are Wes and Bailey too messed up to still care about each other enough to reconnect? Will they ever be able to overcome their guilt, so they can start living instead of existing?

The Ghost of You and Me is a beautiful heartbreaking story about tragic love. Bailey and Spencer were quite young when they became a couple, but Bailey instantly knew that what they were having was real. She's a sensitive girl and loves with all her heart. Spencer and Wes are different and they both have their own appealing qualities. Wes is good looking, popular, caring and moody and Spencer is a nerd with a cheerful and forgiving personality. They are equally important to Bailey and I often had tears in my eyes when I read about her grief and sorrows. Bailey needs a friend and she can use some guidance, which after a year of struggling is exactly what she gets. She's in a downward spiral at the beginning of the book, but with Spencer's help she has a chance to become herself again. That was amazing to read about and I couldn't turn the pages quickly enough to see if his plan would work.

Kelly Oram has written a fantastic emotional book. I often had tears in my eyes while reading The Ghost of You and Me. The story impressed me in many different ways. Kelly Oram skillfully describes the complexity of the friendship between two boys and one girl and knows exactly how to bring her character's feelings to life. She carefully explores them and writes with plenty of empathy. Bailey has lost so much and the same goes for Wes. Kelly Oram masterfully writes about two teenagers who are alive, but have forgotten how to have fun and be happy and one dead one who can still joke and enjoy things. That contrast makes the story incredibly intriguing and I was gripped straight away. The Ghost of You and Me is sad, but also hopeful and it has a terrific bittersweet ending. I absolutely loved this brilliant poignant story and highly recommend it.

I love how the book focuses on the relationships between Wes, Spencer and Bailey and not just the romantic dynamic. The romantic dynamic speaks to me of what we seek as a love newbie compared with what we seek as we grow. The friendships feel just as important in this story as the romance and I love that about this plot. Some parts of their situation I quickly guessed, but the surprises kept coming until the very end of the book for me nonetheless. I love how bits of the truth unravelled over time leaving the reader to suppose, guess and ultimately be surprised in small moments along the way. I love all Kelly Oram’s romance books... most of which I got really into from the start, this one took longer to feel as immersive, but I wound up eagerly reading this at the end and it quickly joined the ranks of my favourite Kelly Oram books. As with many of Kelly Oram’s books, a part of me wanted to immediately re-read this book and I suspect it’ll be one I’ll read again plenty of times in the future. Thus far, it’s my favourite book of her standalone novels, although her fab romance series books give this tough competition, which makes picking an absolute favourite of her books nigh on impossible for me. Some serious themes are touched on in this book, so it’s not as light reading as some of Kelly Oram’s books, but this book never really feels heavy and is actually rather consistently uplifting to my surprise given some of the themes discussed. Do be aware though that there are a few bewildering copy errors that require mental editing to make sense, although they aren’t numerous or all that intrusive to the plot.

You can also read this review in my blog here

It’s been almost a week since I’ve read this story but the emotions I’ve felt while reading this is still fresh in my memory. I’m used to Kelly Oram’s witty Young Adult Romances but this one is so beautiful yet so heartbreaking. Imagine losing someone you really love at such a young age, and it’s not just that, but you also feel responsible for his death. Tragic eh

Another thing I like about this book is that the author added a little twist to this story making it more unforgettable than her other books. The character development was amazing too and I really enjoyed getting to know them and was also devastated when everything fell apart. I really feel for both the main characters and in what they’ve been through. I’m just so happy that they finally got the happy ending that they both deserved.

Although it may sound cliche, I really find the romance so cute. Well, I’m usually a fan of puppy romances anyway, *wink.

And the ending was really cute and hopeful for the both of them. After what they’ve been through, I can’t think of anything more sweeter than that. Two thumbs up for for this wonderful story.
