Readers of Forcing Checkmate will learn common checkmate patterns by solving exercises. Pattern recognition develops through first finding simple checkmates in one move, then creating some of the same positions through two moves, three moves, and four or more. Most of the exercises are from games of ordinary players. A few are from lesser known games of great players past and present. There are 160 exercises. Fifty checkmates in one start the book, then fifty checkmates in two. The third section has sixty exercises with checkmates ranging from one move to nine.
