Every orca pod has its very own theme song! Musical elements include whistles, clicks, and pops. Singing is the orca way of communicating, navigating, and hunting. This read offers young children the chance to get in tune with the worlds largest dolphin species.

I live in South Dakota with my husband and my two boys. I also have a dog named Quincy.

I usually do my writing on my laptop at the dining room table. Or I use the computer in my office.

I love writing nonfiction books because I learn all sorts of interesting things about our world.

I hope you read some of my books and learn, too. Maybe you will even get an idea for something you'd like to write!

Blastoff! Reader Level 3 (early fluent), Series: Ocean Life Up Close

Text features: table of contents, bold text from glossary, inset pictures, page numbers, a map, diagrams, labels (some with arrows), glossary, bibliography, web resources, index

Did you know that orcas make waves to knock penguins off ice floes? Now that's cold! This is a great text on orcas. The photographs go well with the adjoining text, especially when there are labels and diagrams to clarify information.

Audience: 1st (read-aloud)-4th grade
Usage: orcas, oceans, prey, independent research, introduction to water mammals

24 pages. This is in the Ocean Life Up Close series. It was well-written and organized. The photos are outstanding. The data is presented in an easy to read format. I especially like the maps and charts that show different facts. Kids will enjoy this series. I learned a lot about orcas - AKA Killer Whales. I especially like how the graph shows the comparable swimming speeds of other sea animals. It is great to compare. Highly recommended for Grades 3-5.
