The last insect to need a megaphone would be a cicada. No bug is louder than a male cicada buzzing for a female! This title shouts cool cicada facts at kids, including that cicada noisemakers are called tymbals and that nymphs can stay underground for up to 17 years!
Great introduction to this very unusual insect. Something so very sad about being in the ground for all those years and only having a single season to live. I hate to be morbid; but it seems as if there is a possibility of them being used as food...they are even called (by some) 'land shrimp'! Guess we have to look at all solutions to try to feed our growing population!
Perfect cicada book for young readers. We are just about to experience Brood X (17 year) emergence in Cincinnati Ohio. This book will be great for our summer camp programs.
Cicadas are not my favorite bug. Well, actually, I don’t have a favorite bug; however, it was interesting to learn how they make that loud and annoying noise.
