This is How We Do It!

This is How We Do It, but to Montell and Kristin Jordan, this phrase is more than just the title of one of Montell’s most popular songs. It is a clear statement about how they have approached every day of their more than twenty years of marriage.

When the couple entered a marriage covenant together in front of God, family and friends years ago, divorce was never an option, and today it is still not.

That is quite a stance in a world where divorce is just as accepted (even celebrated) as marriage is, but the Jordans hope to inspire others to see the joys, rewards and peace that comes from marriage through their new book, This is How We Do It! Making Your Marriage a Masterpeace.

Focusing on providing humorous but straightforward Christian marriage counseling, the Jordans highlight important factors to consider, whether you are single, engaged or are married, to help define God’s plan for marriage to others.

Scripture is included throughout Masterpeace to educate readers on how the word meets the world to reveal the covenant blueprint for marriage, God’s reasoning for bringing man and woman together, and how children are to be raised in a godly manner. Faith is important to the Jordans and, as expressed in their book, kept their marriage strong through challenging times in career, family and walks with Christ.

Readers also will get a glimpse of the first meeting between Montell and Kristin, seen by both as more comical than romantic, but that lead to the realization of God’s intervention in their lives to make them one.

It’s not just a celebration of how God brought two people together into a lasting marriage; This is How We Do It is a teaching lesson to all couples that marriages determined by God are meant to last into eternity.

This Is How We Do It! Making Your Marriage A Masterpeace by Montell and Kristin Jordan is a honest, wise and well written guide that offers an indispensable contribution to understanding what it takes to create a successful marriage.

Married for decades, in this insightful book the Jordans share the many lessons they have learned over the years. While admitting to once experiencing "many tremendous, even epic, failures" throughout their journey as husband and wife, together they have taken those failures and turned them into lessons. From those lessons they have produced a well balanced must read for anyone looking to improve their marriage.

Describing a successful marriage as one consisting of three components: God, husband and wife. The book begins with An Introductory Love Letter from Montell and Kristin. In this letter they provide a disclaimer which states, “To clear any confusion, we understand the world has attempted to define and redefine the institution of marriage. For all intents and purposes, and with no apologies made, we will subscribe to God's biblical definition of marriage according to scripture in Genesis 2, which is between a man and a woman, and choose not to add or take away anything from the Word of God. We are also not offering refunds for the book, but we hope presenting this now will at least save you the trouble of reading our story only to find that we believe the Word of God to be truth, regardless of what the word of man says." I was a little surprised when I first read this admission. However, I was totally able to appreciate the authors honesty and full disclosure. By making this statement in the beginning of the book it allows the reader to get a clear understanding of the authors perspectives and direction.

What I like most about this book is it’s practical advice. Although the book is faith based, it is not preachy. The Jordans not only highlight problems that could arise within a marriage, but they most importantly provide solutions to these problems. By using their own life experiences as examples, I found each story very relatable. Although some of the topics had the potential of becoming heavy, there is never a heavy moment in the book. Instead both Montell and Kristin delivers each chapter in a lighthearted, yet informative way. Not just food for thought, this book is also entertaining. Each chapter very inspiring.

Althought the title of the book suggests this book is for married couples, it is written in such an inclusive way that the lessons are relatable even to those that are single. Some of the chapters include, Moving From The ME Train To The WE Train, Learning How To Resolve Conflict, Marriage Myths, and Affair-Proofing Your Marriage, just to name a few.

This Is How We Do It! Is a teaching tool for men and women. It can be read by those that are married, engaged, or still in search of Mr. or Mrs. Right. I highly recommend this self-help book, which could easily read as part memoir, to anyone looking to improve his or her relationship. It is enjoyable on many levels. Multiple readings would definitely be enriching.

Enlightening

I enjoyed every aspect of this book and gave it to my husband to also read. There are so many lessons to learn and I would keep referring to this book from time to time to assist me in this journey of marriage. Ultimately the work still needs to be done to achieve success in marriage.

Great stories explaining how a marriage can crumble if you don’t make God and your marriage your priority. Great blueprint included to help make your covenant marriage be a success.

This couple has been together for almost 30 years and happily still in love. In my experience if someone is doing something successfully that is whom you want to learn from. Great read!
