Such a wonderful piece of work by Jazz Singh! The writing was understated and minimalistic without hyperbole or too much drama. The subtle one liners were enough to convey the meaning and depth of emotions. It is very difficult to achieve this kind of writing especially romance, when one tends to veer towards flowery phrases. Jazz Singh doesn’t need that to prove a point. The whole story felt like an iceberg at times. Apparently small on the surface…But a huge chunk of it hidden beneath. There were words that hovered beneath the façade, waiting to be expressed. So many unsaid words and emotions that could have lost its power to convey the message, had they been expressed.
The plot was simple. A man’s journey in search of his own identity and his transformation into becoming a good human being and finding love. The characters were real and multi-dimensional without frills. They provide the background of conflict through which Karan comes out victorious.
I loved Karan. He is a man with so many layers. The wounded, abandoned boy, the ruthless businessman, the vulnerable lover, the loyal friend, the insecure son, the penitent human being, and the mature angst-ridden man is so heart-wrenchingly portrayed. He bound the plot, giving it so much depth and layers.
Jahnavi was more like a symbol of love and compassion and purity. A ray of sunshine!
Karan’s love for her is defined by not just his yearning for her but the fact that he wants TO BE like her. What he felt for her was sublime and life-altering. He craves the security and love and compassion that he sees in her and her father. For all the vengeful thoughts he harbours, he rises above himself to forgive everyone who hurt him. Forgiveness is about cleansing and moving on. And Karan’s struggle to achieve that throughout the story is beautifully depicted. He has the courage to choose the difficult path. Not to grab and accumulate and destroy, but to nurture and protect and help. His relationship with his mother is beautiful and realistic too. It is her patient love that makes him choose goodness instead of revenge. And Jahnavi becomes the goal. Even though he dithers to reach out and make her his.
The central theme of the plot was love or the lack of it in different forms and how it affects people, prompting them to act in ways that destroys lives. They foster hatred and greed and avarice and dissolute behaviour. None of the smaller characters who negatively affect Karan’s life were actually happy. They were all looking for love without knowing the true meaning of it.
There were many memorable lines from the book. The one I loved the most was, ‘Did silence have a physical presence? Could it enter a room like another person and join a conversation?’
A beautiful book! I loved the cover page too. Subtle and elegant!
