Broadway has come to town as the stage production of Simply Sugarcreek is set to debut at a local theater. Cheryl’s old friend, actress and pop star Lacey Landers, returns to Sugarcreek as the star. When rehearsals get underway, a series of strange events makes it clear that someone is trying to sabotage the play, and the list of those who have a reason to ruin the production is a long one. The show must go on, so Cheryl and Naomi set out to unmask the culprit as events escalate. But when a crew member vanishes, they must race against the clock to find her before it’s too late. Can the two friends figure out who is up to no good before opening night? Or will the curtain fall before the actors say their opening lines at the premier?
Emily Thomas was born in London, and has lived there most of her life – except between the ages of 13 and 18 when she lived in Maldon in Essex on board a Thames Sailing Barge, with her family of seven assorted siblings and stepsiblings and two warring cats. Emily also works as an editor of many different kinds of books, including children’s and young adult fiction. She now lives in Brixton, with no pets and a lot of books.
Cheryl’s friend Lacey a film star is back in town to do an off broadway play about Sugarcreek. From the beginning things happen that threaten the production. Lights falling on stage, blackouts, props going missing etc. When Lacey gets a threat the FBI is called in. One of the FBI men is Lacey’s fiancé. Cheryl and Levi are still interested in each other but doing nothing about it, even talking about what they could work out with their different religions. It seems like they are just waiting for a miracle to happen with the answers.
A Play on Words is an exciting story written by Emily Thomas in the Sugarcreek Amish Mystery series. This is a new author to me but I enjoyed her writing style a lot. Fame and glory comes to Sugarcreek in the way of an off Broadway play. When Lacy Landers, a young actress from a previous book, returns to Sugarcreek so does drama and mystery. Someone is trying to shutdown the play and the list of suspects is long. Cheryl Cooper comes to the aid of the FBI to help solve the mystery. When props disappear, a threatening note, and crashing lights happen Cheryl knows this is serious. With the help of her dear friend Naomi, Cheryl tracks down the suspects. More than one person is responsible which makes solving this mystery a bit more difficult. The author has done a wonderful job telling her story thru her characters.
I was not given a complimentary copy of this book to read and review. I was not approached to post a favorable response and all opinions are my own. I have rated this story with five stars for meeting my expectations of a wonderful story that I can highly recommend to others.
20th book in series. This book brings Lacey Landers back to Sugarcreek for a Play on Amish life that is going to Broadway. As everyone gets to Sugarcreek some strange things start happening. The breaker goes out and throws the stage in darkness. Lacey gets a threatening note on her door, and the props Gloria bought have gone missing. The director hires Naomi and Elizabeth to make all the amish costumes for the play. Cheryl and Lacey have stayed friends since they met. Lacey has Cheryl helping out with the mystery of whats happening around the theater. And will Levi and Cheryl ever find a way to be together?
This book in the series has a new twist as some of the main characters are Broadway actors. I don't know if Naomi would have really be given permission by her Bishop to make the costumes. Since she was only making the Costumes for the Actors playing Amish people it might be OK. I only own one more book in the series, I hope it reveals if Levi & Cheryl find a way to be together.
Another good story in the series. This time a previous character returns and brings a bit of mystery with her. The story was a little too far-fetched for me this time. I enjoy the familiarity with the characters and the town. This one has a Broadway play premier in Sugarcreek and has an Amish story line. The plot of sabotaging a show has been done repeatedly in other books and just seemed a little stale.
Did absolutely zero research before claiming that a broadway show would play a small town in Ohio and that the costumes could be seen by some random Amish woman. Read the first 10 pages and threw the book out.
While possibly far fetched, as one comment said, that an Amish woman would be doing costumes for a Broadway play, this was one of the more suspenseful book in the series. More twists in this one, when you are thinking "so who is the bad guy?" One of my favorites.
Lacey is a little hard for me to like, which brought the overall rating for the book down some. It's as though she is supposed to be an endearing character, but she really just acts like a spoiled brat sometimes.

Pop star Lacey Landers is back in Sugarcreek to star in a Broadway Play called Simply Sugarcreek, but mysterious things are happening at the theater and Cheryl is investigating!
3.5 stars. I love Sugarcreek Amish Mysteries, don’t get me wrong. But sometimes the interchanging authors in the series leaves me with either amazing reads, or just okay reads. This author was nothing special to me and over explained way too much of the mystery and dialogue and didn’t portray the main character as well as some of the other authors have. But I am very excited to read the next book!
