This series of five books was okay if you just want some light, slightly erotic, entertainment, but if you want plot you may want to look elsewhere. The writing was okay, but the stories were just too short to be satisfying. I had assumed there was more connection between the stories, but there was very little. Only the basic premise as to how the human women got to their "mates" was the same - hence the mail order human bride thing. It would have been nice if the alien worlds had something in common, but there was nothing at all.
This is an OK set of sci-fi alien romances, but they are just a bit too short to have enough character development. I needed more backstory on all the characters. Also, each story is very similar -- a human woman agrees to be a mail-order bride to escape a post-apocalyptic earth world, gets matched with an alien man from a patriarchal culture, gets upset with him or tries to escape him for some reason, and then they fall in love. The problem that causes each woman to be upset or try to escape is usually because they don't talk or a cultural difference. But the woman always gets over it way too easily, and just accepts that she will now live in a male-dominated culture where women are treated well, but are considered property. I found that very hard to believe.
One thing that really bothers me about all the books in this set, though, is the very male-dominated culture that each woman marries into. In each case, the woman is considered the property of the man, and is just expected to be OK with that. In one case, the men kidnap most of their brides from other cultures, and they think that is perfectly OK. In that story, the man is actually in charge of the mate kidnapping raids -- that's not how he gets his own mate, but he expects her to be OK with him continuing to be in charge of those raids. That doesn't sound like a mate to me -- more like a slave. It doesn't matter how good the woman is treated. If she is there against her will, she is a slave.
If you are looking for really quick sci-fi alien romance reads, with some steamy scenes -- and don't mind a lack of character development, and women who are considered the "property" of men (sometimes without their consent), this is an OK choice. But the treatment of women was too much for me, so I give the boxed set 2 stars.
My rating system is below. 1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it. 2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws. 3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating. 4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one. 5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.
I give these books 3 stars because even though the stories are well written and have good story plots I hate reading books this short I don't understand why if you can come up with this much why not write a few more pages and give us more? Each book was pretty much the same but different character names little twists to the plot. In every story the leading lady is looking for a way to escape earth which is falling apart people dying from war, poverty, and disease. So they sign up for a ride on the starship matchmaker, who matches them up with their alien mates. Each story the women usually have something that upsets them causing them to try and flee their mates only for the alien to catch her and then they have a life altering discussion which seems to open her eyes to why he is the way he is and then they make love and we jump to the future and find out how they lived happily ever after The end. So in saying all that I think if you can come up with enough for a short story you should be able to think of more to make it more enjoyable and longer but oh well that's my two cents I wouldn't say don't waste your time but if you're looking for something short and sweet this is a good choice for you but if you're like me and prefer to read full length novels this wouldn't be for you.
For a collection of shorts, these are okay reads. I'm happy that this is a collection because if I had purchased any one of these stories individually, I'd have been highly disappointed and I would not have read others in the series. There's not a lot of character or world building here, more of a "wham, bam, thank you, alien" in a literary sense. With the addition of more than one story in this book, I didn't dwell on the missing plot details and instead focused on the next tale.
Great job of storytelling! If you're looking for something to read that will be enjoyable and not too long try these stories. Enjoyable experience in writing with different people and intriguing writing. Short stories that are just right if you don't have a lot of time or a quick story before you sleep. Wonderful!
This was a great collection of sci-fi romance short stories! They are easy to read, and are sweetly satisfying. Each starts with a human woman escaping a ravaged and lawless Earth, and traveling to meet the alien who has paid for her. The worlds and aliens are different, but each has a great HEA!
This review is for the last story since I reviewed the others individually. All of them were good. This one mainly focused on one of the women that was kidnapped off the Mail Order spaceship before reaching their mate. Zurron & Riley are a great pairing. HEA to make the heart swell.
The stories weren't too bad. Some better than others. I like the second story the most. I've actually read two of them on separate occasions so it was nice to read the rest. Definitely for 18 and older.
This book wasn't what I was thinking it was. I have read a couple of the books previously and had not cared for them then didn't care for them now. I'm not saying anything against Ms Mercury, I just didn't care for a couple of the books.
Every one of these stories had so much potential to be great but wete only good because they were each so short and fast. It was missing the build up of the relationships. Some also ended rather abruptly without a satisfying conclusion. What saved it was the great characters.
This was an absolute joy to read! The author’s voice is so distinct and refreshing, making every page a delight. The characters were vibrant, and their journeys were inspiring. I was left feeling both satisfied and wanting more. Truly a standout in its genre.
This was an absolute masterpiece! The narrative was rich and layered, with themes that really made me think. The characters were complex and relatable, and I was fully invested in their outcomes. It’s one of those stories that stays with you long after you’re done. Just brilliant!
This series has five steamy and sweet alien romances, each with their own special characteristics. All the aliens in the stories love and honor their new mates in their own ways. They all have wonderful characters and lots of action.
Story of desperate women seeking a new beginning and a one of a kind love. They find it on a new world with a alien. One who loves her. It was wonderfully written.
Women sign up to leave earth to get away from war and poverty. This book contains different stories but all are about young woman and an Aliens. The stories keep you reading from one to another.
I thought these short stories were good but I would like to see them more developed. I felt like I was just getting to the good part and they would end.
Ugh I’m bothered they’re so short I wanted more lots more but I’m soooooo happy they all found their mates and love each other dearly I need more sweet authors lots more
Interesting end of earth, but unfortunately not too far fetched. These actually are sweet romances of a different kind of wild wild west. Enjoyed them immensely. Also, short stories so they can be read in a few hours.
Sweet romance stories with hot dominant aliens and human mates. Each story has fabulous characters that you just fall in love with. In this series, you get five very sexy, fun to read alien stories. I really enjoyed this one. I read it straight through and couldn't put it down until I was done. I would highly recommend this wonderful book to everyone.
Yhese are all different storied but with the sam main concept and even the same ships that have the women traveling on to meet their new mated. Loved all thr stories though they are short and sweet
Even though I gave most of the books in this collection 4 stars, Alien's Orphan Bride really deserved its 5 stars and I had to bump the collection's rating to reflect it. All of these stories are short, hot, and enjoyable. Each story is a different planet and each character has a different background. The stories are not big on world building or character development but they do have hot dominant aliens that will cherish their human mates and happily ever afters for all. Each individual story takes about an hour or so to read, so if you are looking for some quick entertaining reads, grad this collection and enjoy.
